Russell played really well today...

Yes Mason has only 1 goal after quite a few sub appearances, goalscoring experience of Russell was needed today, as Maclaren said.

First 90 mins was it??

Looked a lot more dangerous. Cut in well a few times second half when he got his confidence up after scoring.

just think he's been on the periphery of previous games even though scoring regular enough, thought his all round play was great today

Problem with Russell is that he was a victim of the formation used by the previous regime. He needs to be running onto a pass on the penalty spot, but has been required to be a team player and run the channels, play 40yds with his back to goal and link up play.

It's tiresome being so right all the time

Did he play up front today or on the wing?

Wide. It was a 'proper' 4-3-3 with Jamie marauding on one wing, Russell on the other, with either one of them drifting inside to support Martin who played the classic 'back to goal' target man role as well as making runs in the channels. It allowed Hughes plenty of opportunity to get on the ball and rip Leeds a new one.

To be fair, how could we have predicted James Vaughan would be this good? And, even if we had, I still think he would have preferred Huddersfield over us. Some things you just can't control.

Back on topic though, Russell's a great player and showed it yesterday. He'll get 15+ goals, that's for sure.

There's no guarantee that Vaughan would have hit it off in the same way with Derby - anything could have happened.

Instead, we now seem to have a pair on the same wavelength. Swindlehurst and Biley, anyone?

Another point is that Huddersfield are pretty much reliant on Vaughan:

(cup goals included)

James Vaughan 11
Adam Hammill 2
Joel Lynch 2
Jonathan Hogg 1
Adam Clayton 1
Danny Ward 1

As opposed to:

Chris Martin 7

Craig Bryson 6
Johnny Russell 5

Will Hughes 2

Conor Sammon 2

Mason Bennett 1
Jake Buxton 1
Michael Jacobs 1
Jamie Ward 1
Zak Whitbread 1
