Norwich City striker Chris Martin is poised to leave the club he has been with since he was a youngster to join Championship outfit Derby County.

The 24-year-old frontman has been on loan with the Rams since February and manager Nigel Clough is expecting to complete a permanent deal soon.

Clough has been in talks with Martin and his representatives and is confident the transfer will go through soon.

“We are close to securing Chris Martin,” Clough told the Derby Telegraph.

“I think he has shown enough in the last two or three months to say he is going to be a good addition for us. Some of his link-up play with Jamie Ward and the midfield against Millwall on Saturday (when Derby won 1-0) was very good. We have seen some good things from him.”

Martin joined Derby on loan in February and has made 13 league appearances for the Rams, scoring two goals.

Before that he had a spell in League One with Swindon Town, scoring just once in 12 appearances, with City manager Chris Hughton allowing him to see out much of the final year of his contract away from Carrow Road.

The Beccles-born frontman came through City’s Academy, making his full debut for the club in a 1-0 home defeat against Wolves in the Championship in January, 2007.

He went on to make 117 appearances for Norwich, 87 of them starts, scoring 34 goals, with 23 of them coming in the triumphant 2009-10 season in League One.

Earlier he spent a season on loan at Luton Town, where he scored 11 goals, while he also had a spell at Crystal Palace in 2011-12.

That's bad news if its true. Clough thinks that he has shown enough over the past 2-3 months to warrant signing his permanently, he thinks - not he has shown enough but Clough thinks he has. And giving an example of his great link up play in one game against Milwall is hardly a glowing endorsement.
