Theo Robinson

Now i may get a slating for what i am about to write but i need to know if it is just me that thinks Theo Robinson is not the answer to our striker problem.

i know he is only in the starting 11 because of injury to wardy.

I am a season ticket holder so i see it first hand and i have tried to give him the benefit of the doubt.

in his first few games he was running around like a headless chicken but he obviously had pace, something that i would have thought by now would have been honed by Nigel Clough to try and use him when he is in the team as a player who could run into space, but no, nigel seems to use him as some sort of useless part, more akin to the go fast stripe on an old MK II Ford Escort

Theo has the positioning skills of a man with no eyes and the footballing brain of a gnat, he is never in the right position to recieve a ball and he seems to try and run in the opposite direction to where common sense should take him, i think he has so little self confidence in his ability to control the ball that he places himself on purpose into positions where his team mates will not pass to him, in yesterdays game he was man marking his defenders, instead of running away from them he was running to them, when he wasnt doing that he was standing on salmons toes almost and therefore taking himself and his striking partner out of the game aswell.

salmon had his worst game in a Derby shirt yesterday and i cant help but think some of this was down to the fact that he was so unnerved by the constant poor positioning of theo that it affected his own game, so much so he was taken off.

Why does clough persist with trying to play the two of them, they are like chalk and cheese, salmon is a target man who should recieve the ball and knock it on to his strike partner, something that works fairly well with ward but with robinson it is totally ineffective, at half time we were so devoid of ideas that it was crying out for a change, once clough had seen they were not working together and went to playing five across the middle and one upfront it was crying out for robinson to go off and to bring jacobs on and then bring tyson to see if he could bring anything new to the game, but clough stuck with his stubborn plan and i was almost annoyed when robinson got the equaliser as it will keep him in the starting 11 for tuesday nights game against ipswich.

Do other Derby fans share my thoughts or am i alone, i feel that the team is weakened by theo robinson, i feel that the midfield do not have a clue to where to play the ball for him as he is never where he should be and that stifles out a lot of potential creative play.

i know poeple will come back at me with the fact that he scores goals but he should have had three yesterday not one !! and we should have had three points not one !!!.

i would like to see tyson start with salmon for the next game but if salmon is dropped i feel that will be the kick in the balls that will send him on an even more downward spiral, he is the kind of player that needs to be scoring goals or his confidence will drop and we will see no more of him and that will be a nice waste of an undisclosed ammount of cash !!!

is theo robinson the answer ?? really ?

Theo Robinson - Plays poor, grabs a goal.

Conor Sammon - Plays well, never going to score.

Nathan Tyson - Impact player at best. (I'm not a fan)

Mason Bennett - Wouldn't even consider him for the starting 11 yet.

Jamie Ward - Well, Wardy is Wardy, on his day he's unplayable at times.

They are all our strikers close to/in our first team,

I think we have to start Theo.

Is Theo the answer? No, Jordan Rhodes probably is. Except of course Theo cost £0.2m and Rhodes cost £8m.

You say Theo should have had 3 yesterday and only scored 1 - seriously, you think thats bad to only score 1 goal out of every 3 chances!!!!!!

yes when the first chance he had was into an empty net !!

totally agree, one of the worst misses of the season imo, but the point is that no one seriously believes that Theo is "the answer". I presume you mean the answer to getting promoted?

Theo is what he is......if he played every game (up front, not out wide Nige 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> ), he'd score 1 in every 3 games. Thats it really, apart from chasing defenders down and working his bollux off for the team.

I'm really not sure what else you expect from him.

I get frustrated watching the lad but it's unfair as I'm not sure what I actually expect from him. I know his first touch and passing ability is awful but I still get angry when he fails to make a 4 yard pass. I need to stop it really and accept he's one of those lovable players that are ***** but chip in with the goods despite his lack of ability.

I can't help but laugh when he scores. The chap's unreal.

He's not the answer but he's all we have on the goalscoring front. He'll miss sitters now and again but he does chip in with his fair share of important goals so can't be too harsh.

Tyson-Theo is not the way forward in my opinion. Too similar which unfortunately for us means two poor footballers in both of the striker spots.

i dont know either Uttox but i just find him frustrating to watch and i just feel that any chance of getting fluidity back into our attacking play is stifled by having Theo on the pitch, perhaps i am being to hard on him and expecting to much but i just winds me up that he is never in position to recieve a ball and he never looks for the ball.

I have said my piece now and got it off my chest, i dont wish to upset the forum by critcising one of the few players to score lately but i just wanted to see how other rams fans looked upon him, especially those who watch him week in week out, to people who cant get to the games and just see in the paper or hear on the radio that theo has scored he probably sounds like a good asset but when you watch him on a regular basis its a different story or it is to me, i hope he proves me wrong and gets three against ipswich and finishes the season on 20+, but something tells me he wont.

I think we all share your frustration wth Theo's overall play, but for all his lack of positional sense, his positioning was bang on in following Bryson's shot in, and it was hardly like they were queuing up to score. He has his shortcomings, sure, but imo he's the only player we have capable of getting 15 or more goals a season, which is a good return for a mid-table side. So surely his value to the team is important?

I'm not sure who, given the players at our disposal, would do a better job?

Agree with every word.

I curse about 20 times per match when Theo plays. But seeing his name on the team sheet gives me belief.

Everyone says we play better when Sammon and Ward are up top, what about Theo and Ward?? Have they played together this season yet?

There is a reason for that, who would hold the ball up? A play with their back to goal... Think about it, we'd be unbelievably lightweight.

Theo got twelve goals in a season where he was only fit for I believe around two thirds, as dodgy as he may be create enough chances for him (and allow for his erratic nature) and you have a 10-15 goal a season striker right there. You've just got to deal with his frustrating play and make allowances for the fact that while he may hit 15, he may also scuff 7 of those chances and only score 8 all year.

He's worth keeping around, and he was only £200k-ish (£50k above or below that figure perhaps depending on what you read into that transfer) so he's atleast worth the money paid and the wages put forward for him. I like him, with Ward I suspect he has a much better chance of succeeding, he likes to be put through on goal and have the ball centered to him, rather than feed off of a target man and try to create chances for himself. Put simply, he can't do it all too well.

Theo cost a pittance, and has 4 goals in 4 starts and 6 sub appearances this season. One of his main roles this season is to come on and run the clock down with the ball in the corner. What more do you want from him? Cult icon status awaits if he carries on in this vain for a few years.
