Mendez Laing isn’t a very good defender

    Totally agree.

I think the reason people are going mad with the 3 at the back formations is because we have depth in central defence.

I personally prefer the 433 better for our sqaud. Just feels a bit weird signing Stears up again today and to then possibly add another CB tomorrow.

If it’s just 1 that you need I’d say you have a very good chance can’t see every single person renewing or someone not moved elsewhere

I've been to the ticket office and they have advised to keep looking, especially on the 29th but to be quick as any tickets will come available will soon be snapped up in the South Stand.

Will Grewal-Pollard is probably the next in line (as he will new be a first year professional) but he was converted to CB quite a lot last season when Reece Hutchinson was playing LB for us as an U23 trialist.

I’d say next up would he highly rated Riley Moloney, an England youth captain I think, but he missed most of last season so didn’t get much U18 playing time. Moloney will be a second-year scholar this season.

Cian Kelly-Caprani, a first year professional this season, was also played at left-back for the U18s even though he’s more of an attacking player really.

Likewise, RB Rhys Brailsford, who can play anywhere across the backline, was also played at LB for the U18s. Brailsford will also be a first year professional this season.

Most likely, I suppose, are 34. Jack Stretton and 49. Bartosz Cybulski but they could both find their opportunities more limited this season if we add another striker or two to the addition of David McGoldrick.

You then have the U23s who got a squad number last season but didn’t really break through: 22. Max Bardell (RB) and 44. Osazee Aghatise (MC) if he signs his new contract. Then you have the other U23s Will Grewall-Pollard (LB/CB), Harrison Solomon (CB) and Courtney Clarke (MC/CB) plus Connor Dixon (MC) if he signs his new contract, and last but not least the wild card Bobby Duncan (SC).

Olamide Ibrahim (MC) had a good first season as a first-year scholar, but fell down the pecking order last season, but the former Manchester United youth player could yet step-up this season as a first year professional.

Of the U18s, 47. Darren Robinson (MC) and 46. Carlos Richards (RW) have impressed in training this week and Liam Rosenior has said they will both play against Bradford City tomorrow. Another U18 central midfielder, Sam Sebagabo, is one to watch but next season could be too soon for him.

Thank you mate, that was an interesting read.

I think players who play out wide can certianly be give minutes knowing if they make mistakes it won't be as costly to the team. Looking at how many senior defenders we have it could also be an opportunity to bring some young defenders through and have a chance in the first team too.

Out of those and I'd only really want Sibley as an AM, the rest feel a bit makeshift in that position.

If we want to play 4231 I think we need to go out and get a good 10 to either compete with or start ahead of Sibley. Then 1/2 wide players. I think at CM we should still be ok if Knight is still here.

But personally I take one look at that and would want to set up something like

    Wildsmith

    Byrne Chester Cashin *new*

    Bird

    Knight   Hourihane

    Barkhuizen   McGoldrick Mendez-Laing

    Or alternatively if we fancy Sibley;

    Wildsmith

    Byrne Chester Cashin *new*

    Bird Hourihane

    Sibley

    Barkhuizen   McGoldrick Mendez-Laing

I've just got a funny feeling we will try to shoehorn Knight there though and remain a bit toothless.

I think the first team will be out first  choice 11 on paper, however Sibley will still have a massive role to play and will feature in most games. Either starting or coming off the bench (mainly as an attacking CM but occasionally outwide too).

Portsmouth linked with Joe Rafferty on a free, just left Preston. I don’t think he’d be necessarily good enough as a regular starter, but we need squad players too.

He can play LB and RB, has experience across the 3 leagues below the PL, is under 30 and would be on relatively low wages I’d imagine. When we still need to add quite a few new faces, versatility could be very important. We currently have one contracted senior full-back. A decent player who can play both roles would be a pretty good addition.

This type of player may be ideal having a small sqaud. Having a first choice left and right back and then someone who can play either role supplemented by young prospects from the academy.

He got married weeks ago. So I hope he's not still on his honeymoon, he won't be able to walk never mind run the length of a football pitch.

Surley him and his agent will still be able to negotiate a deal regarding of when he got married. Concerning we don't have a left back and we have no news on Fozzy.

  7. For me we need to play 433 or 4321 to get the best out our wide men Barkhuizen and Mendez-Laing. It would then also allow us to play and get the best out of Knight and Hourihane with Bird sitting (presuming Knight stays).

I am delighted with the business that we have done so far. The core of the sqaud is starting to take place now.

I don't think we will sign many more "big name free agents" though. I think we need to get the likes of Davies and Fozzy signed up next to help bring stability and knit the team together. Maybe also give CKR and Stearman a new deal for depth and add to the dressing room. We should also look to promote a couple of our academy players like to the mix in the first team. Hopefully we can also bring in a couple players from the lower leagues hungry to prove a point. Maybe also we will get a few loanees in ?

Then our sqaud will have a perfect balance for me. It doesn't need to overly bloated but big enough to cover us for the demands of the season.

If fozzy re signs,  we'll still need another LB, and if Byrne stays we'll still need cover at RB, presumably if the Brighton pair sign and Curtis re signs Gk,Cd, Mid sorted unless we lose so.eone, if we sign Collins as well, means Cf sorted, although I'd like a younger cf to come in personally,  ( Oliver for example). Still thing we need 3 more wide players as well, still,  it's going to be interesting and it's so nice to be talking about football related stuff

I agree. Fulls backs are a priority. Especially as we have no senior left backs.

I don't think we will sign or need three new wingers though. I do agree we need to bring another wide man though. This could be a free agent, on loan or maybe from the lower leagues but we will also then give minutes to young wide forwards in our academy like Carlos Richards.
