At that stage sign one of the freebies up til the end of the season. Madness we’re relying on Collins not to be out for the season in order to go up.

To be fair people wouldn’t be questioning the signing after a hat trick.

Personally I was under whelmed by our forward signings. Maybe we’ve been unlucky to lose three out of four to injury but not addressing the farce of deadline day isn’t looking a smart move.

It’s not even about better in Jan for me.

I’d rather prime Theo Robinson up top tomorrow than force one of our wingers too have to do it.

We had one fit striker and didn't sign any back up.  The talk was about improving the squad. Well when you're backup is Barkhiuzen bringing in any striker with experience is an improvement.  So irrespective of whatever anyone thinks about the size and strength of the squad it was an obvious error.  Wouldn't necessarily have been solely a PW decision so has no relation to hating Warne in my opinion.

Didn't we spend most of January chasing CBT?
It's a thorough process that Warne puts prospective signings through.......not easy to reach the required standard of "good-eggness"
Only of course to discover our marque signing doesn't do defence, was looking un (or dis) interested before being hooked on Tuesday and might be injured now.
    Time well spent....

Everyone going on about Jan window but the biggest error was Wags/Wash in summer - nothing against either in particular but how could anyone really be excited by their signings?

Or a separate thread debating the various Paul Warne threads?
I'm sure you're right but it also depends on the style of football. I find nothing more tedious than possession based side to side crab football without any attacking threat, that had been our modus operandi in the recent past.
It sticks in my throat to use FFP cheats (don't get me started) Leicester as an example, but they won the PL in 15/16 with 42.4% average possession, although with a particular counter attacking style that we don't possess to the same degree.
What I like to see is positive attacking football. In the past while watching our games under different managers, drifting off into boredom and struggling to work out which way we were kicking, I did think that if an alien was suddenly dropped into our stadium they'd have no idea the aim of the game was to get the ball into the opposition's net.
When PW took over it seemed that for the first couple of games a switch was flicked as if no backwards or sidewards passes were allowed, pressing was everything with forward attacking football. That didn't last long and there now seems to be a lot more hopeful balls forward up in the air, with bouts of head tennis and lack of coordinated passing between players.
Overall it seems obvious PW knows 'how to get out of this league' and hopefully we'll do so this season, but I share others' views that it often isn't an easy watch.

Pure speculation at the moment and for me its too early.
Lets face it, even if our form completely nosedived i doubt DC would get rid before the end of the season.
If we do go up and its a big if at the moment then it would be incredibly harsh to sack Warne as despite his many flaws he has objectively completed his mission whether its been nice on the eye or not. With PW a nice guy and DC seemingly a nice guy I somewhat doubt we'd be this harsh upon promotion.
If we miss out on promotion this season then I think there's need to discuss PW future. Personally i'd like him gone under this proviso but once again DC backed him once before, maybe he'll back him again.
Ultimately none of us have a crystal ball and if Iain Dowie can get promoted from the championship as manager then anyone can. Lets worry about the championship if we get there.

I reckon one of the reasons people have had it in for James Collins is that last season, and the first part of this on, despite lumping the ball across the area being our only game plan, and despite us only playing one striker, Collins was regularly not in the area, especially the 6-yard box, often being found out on the wing. Post Stevenage, when we went on that improved run he started being in the right place at the right time more often which has really helped his game, and it coincided with his increased scoring rate. He still goes foraging out on the wing, but that tends to be when we are in build-up stage. Whether it is because the team began playing through the middle a bit more, and put more crosses in at ground or waist level I don't know, but kudos to him because his football has improved greatly. And the reward is that he is no longer the target of our blame, and is instead becoming much more of a favourite. Good for him!

It’s odd, we’re second top scorers in the league, joint fewest goals conceded, most away wins, in the automatic places yet it doesn’t feel like we’ve played well all season nor is there much optimism

I've not read your views of the game, but as an Exeter fan I was pleased with the way we played last night. I thought we took the game to you, we looked confident, passed the ball well and carved out some good opportunities to potentially score, without really looking like scoring very often (a few shots on target, hit the post once, but you defended really well and I don't think we 'deserved' to score many).
Overall, it looked to me like a good tactical game between two defensively strong sides who had set up well, just that one side scored 3 goals, pretty much against the run of play (certainly against the run of possession). In other words, it was a very clear 0-0 game if you exclude your goals 😉
I know a load of Derby fans and they've all been saying that you've been flattering to deceive this season, even when you've been winning. But I didn't see a team like that last night, I saw a solid team, great shape when out of possession and players who can hurt teams on the break (which you did). Despite all the stats, I thought you deserved your win. You made it very difficult for us to score and then delivered the goods when you had the chance, albeit your first goal was a good shot but also a bit of a fluke with the bounce it took, taking it over the keeper who had it covered. Oh well, them's the breaks, you make your own luck in football, if you don't buy a ticket you won't win the raffle, etc.
I thought your fans were quieter than last season when there weren't as many of you. Saw you bouncing occasionally and heard you after you scored, but strangely quiet in the second half even though you were 3-0 up, maybe it was the dominance of our possession that strangled your voices? We were quiet too, which is how I know you were quiet 😉
Also weird that you sold 1,350 tickets (I think) but only 1,100 of you turned up - what's that about?
Anyway, I took a small video clip of you lot from our bank opposite your end, but your website wouldn't let me load it up, said the file was too big. Good luck for the rest of the season, I hope you go up in the autos, this season's league is the poorest for a while, if you don't go up this year you'll regret it when you see who is coming down / up from the leagues above / below.

I feel like there’s little point debating it anymore. Those who have concerns about Warne have set their stall, those who are willing to give it more time have set theirs and the pages of to and fro across the forum make it very clear there’s little movement in those mindsets and not much by way of persuasion being considered.
I’m not arguing in support of Warne or saying he should be everyone’s choice for manager, it’s the proverbial p*ssing in the wind at this point, with many holding valid concerns which they’ve expressed many times over.
Results and performances are the only things that will make a difference to those entrenched in either view, and even then, as @TomTom92 said in another thread yesterday, I think it’s plain that Warne just isn’t for some people and regardless of what he does or doesn’t achieve there’s plenty who’ll be glad to see him go when the time comes. I just hope he gets the team promoted and whoever does replace him, whenever and however Warne leaves, perhaps proves less divisive of a character.

I'd be surprised if we do.
Wash and Waggy are allegedly back soon so makes no sense to add unless we think Gayle or Joao will drastically improve us.

@MadAmster I think Rowett has shown that counter attack football is his way.

I don’t blame him for signing Huddleston, Davies etc. Mel had a reputation for sacking quickly so why would GR plan for the future?

Anyway we digress, I think ultimately some fans will never warm to Warne even if he got us to the prem. He’s shown during his career to be a good Lg1 manager, but whether he’s a good fit for Derby is up for debate (which has been done over and over again).

I think if we do go up Warne must be praised as its mission accomplished.
However Warneball is up there with the worst football I've seen at Derby. Although i will acknowledge that maybe myself and others are so down on PW as we probably expect to go up. Maybe if he had us 17th in the Championship next season playing Warneball me and others wouldn't be quite as critical.
Although maybe that last sentence is rubbish because half the forum couldn't stand Rowett (I could) and he had us top 6.
I do think sadly promotion or no promotion Warne's time here will never be looked upon too fondly. He seemed to have fans against him from the start and now i'd say at least 1/3 of the fan base either despise his football or want hm gone. Sad for everyone really.

@Andicis it’s not just you, but you are the most recent culprit.
I don’t get this constant need to discredit the league and the teams within in it. It’s league football and each league every season is tough in its own way. A new season brings change, new opportunities, new variables and also new challenges.
You take it for what it is, surely? 46 games. 3 points for a win. You don’t get an extra special trophy for getting promoted one year over the other, do you?
Shall we forget the open top bus parade, the medals, and the ticker tape because we are playing Blackpool, Reading, Northampton and Orient rather than Ipswich, Wednesday, Morecambe and Forest Green?
Or shall we bow out of the promotion race altogether and wait to test ourselves against the might of QPR, Rotherham, Wednesday and Stockport?
Eye test this, eye test that. The eye test will show some good and some bad, of course it will. We are currently League 1 level and everything points to that. Ultimately we are a work in progress. You may want to ignore it, you may want to qualify it, but there is progress nevertheless.
Look at this season itself. We’ve gone from getting 21 points from 14 games earlier in the season and looking barely like a top half team, compared to 39 points from 17 games most recently and now being amongst the main contenders for promotion.
Everyone wants to focus on the fact we are not Man City Lite. Everyone wants us to be more like Peterborough and Oxford (who are stuttering and seemingly slipping out of contention might I add).
No-one wants to give Warne and the players credit for finding the belief, character, and consistency to turn the season around and no-one wants to give Warne and the players any credit for showing even more character and toughness to dig in and continue getting results to keep us in the hunt while those much-fabled footballing sides begin to fade.
Yesterday could still be a very important point.
