Of course he was undermined. From the get go he had a player on his hands he simply had to play and that player was touted as his managerial successor from the moment he walked through the door.
Wayne Rooney didn’t come to Derby to be a player here. Let’s not be naive. He talked about going into coaching and becoming a managers years prior and Mel jumped at the chance.
If we signed Ronaldinho with the intention of him becoming Rooney’s successor, and Rooney was forced to play him, do you think he would be happy?
After lockdown 2020, Rooney was only good for freekicks and publicity. How can a manager expect to achieve in such circumstances?

Rooney isn't carrying his builders arse around the pitch for the first 7 or 8 games which probably helps.
Sibley, Knight and Bird played far better under Cocu in my opinion, which I stand by. Sibley now looks like a player desperate to do something and Bird is anonymous most of the time . As for Knight, he was knackered for the last 15 games of the season but kept being rolled out, then his own manager bust his ankle, say no more.   Rooney seems to be copying the template of a manager and his team that had a supposed 4 million payoff. Why get rid if no-ones earmarked to change things. If Bielik hadn't come into the side for 8 games or so we're on a streak of about 3 or 4 wins in a year.

Problem is when you try to use statistics to back up your argument you need to justify the information or its just meaningless as in this case.
You say statistically Rooney is doing better than Cocu, how much better? 1%, 100%? Is using an artificially low result to gauge success valid? And so on.

Just wondering at what point do the stats have to be so bad you'd say he has to go? 2 wins in 25? 2 wins in 30? 2 wins in 40? winning and losing are easy habits to get into, following on from the back 1/3rd of last season (pre embargo) this club has gotten into a horrible habit of losing a lot of games and barely ever winning. It's got to the point that the win-games ratio is so bad that just by chance almost anyone could have picked up more points than he has.

Seen this. Same question never get answered, What is the points deduction actually for? It seems to be either take a points deduction no questions asked OR we keep you in embargo with no foreseeable end. Truly appalling how the EFL are behaving.

2 wins in 23 games is it? Not sure anyone could do a lot worse....this season is very difficult but he should have done a lot better last season. Cocu got us on the brink of the play offs and he too had a lot of problems, taking over so late in the season etc etc.....

The problem with Rooney last season was that we didn't have a style of play. Logically, this made absolutely 0 sense because if you're mimicking your oppositions style the likelihood is they'll be better than you at it. It was indefensible and led to a shameful run that lacked both performances and points. I felt last season he should have been removed with immediate effect post Sheffield Wednesday.

This season Wayne has finally decided to develop a style that is still in progress. My current view is that it's not fantastic either defensively or going forward. Too often we look edgy at the back and conceding chances because of individual errors fostered by the style or because of space left due to the desire to have full backs far up the pitch. Going forward in the games I've watched (Huddersfield, Middlesborough, Stoke, Peterborough, and Birmingham) we've looked poor lacking the ability to unlock defences and create actual opportunities.

However, he does have mitigating circumstances this year and at this point Mel is Rooney's best defence. I'd give him until november/december and if we're in the relegation places at that point it'll be necessary to have a conversation with him that ends with him leaving the club. Our current run over the past 22 games is so poor that even by chance almost anyone could have done better and at some point it's got to reach the level of just being unacceptable. He doesn't deserve a full season but a run of a few months to see if he can turn it around.

watched this game in a bar with my friend as been at hers all weekend. I thought we looked pretty toothless going forward and frail at the back. That's predominantly the issue with our team atm- we don't score many and are always likely to concede. The team struggles to manufacture chances and we lack clinical finishers at this level. The solution is either we need to work a lot more on our chance creation or we get in someone who can score goals. At the back I think it's likely to get worse before it gets better- the ageing pairing will tire as the games start coming thick and fast and if we get any injuries or suspensions then our lack of depth will definitely show.
I'm not necessarily blaming Rooney atm for these issues as there are mitigating circumstances but at what point do the results continue to be bad enough for the club to do a rethink on this appointment. Adapting to the squad we've got is going to be necessary if we want to stay up, it doesn't look like he's doing that and it's 1 win in 6 and 2 wins in 22 for our boss. I can easily see us slipping into the relegation places by our 10th game and I don't necessarily see us climbing our way out of it again.

As well as paying overly-inflated transfer fees and putting square pegs in round holes, we spent half a decade buying players during the best form of their entire life. We weren't paying for the talent, we were paying for the form they were in. No surprise that with many of them, their Derby career simply saw a regression to the mean.
Some of our best signings in the modern era at Pride Park have been cheap-as-chips transfers with players who had a point to prove and - and I really cannot stress this enough - were signed with a specific role in mind. A fairly average Championship player can become indispensable to a playoff side if the system is correct.
In this bracket, we have Inigo Idiazek, Morten Bisgaard, Steve Howard, Christ Martin, Jamie Ward, Craig Bryson, Jake Buxton, Darren Moore, John Brayford...the list is long, but they were almost exclusively signed by George Burley, Nigel Clough and the early, sane version of Billy Davies. Those managers had a way of playing and signed players that fit the system and/or changing room, and none of them needed buckets of cash to do it.

You asked me what i would have done so i gave my answer, that is not the same as getting rid of someone who is no longer of use to you and the other person still is. Keep defending MM all you like he has still been made to look a fool over the course of action he took.

Club is an absolute mess but let's not pretend Rooney is blameless in this situation, as some would consistently try to make you believe, like The Times were yesterday.

Anyone watching the game could see Lawrence was one more foul away from going. He had lost his head, not sure how he even got away with kicking out at their player. It's a basic football decision to sub him off before he gets a red. On his day Lawrence is arguably our best attacking player, and captain too, do you really think Wayne would want to sub him off?
All i'm saying is people can't credit Wayne with a good 'tactical' decision for something that he was forced into doing.
The Shinnie sub is a separate tactical switch, but you could argue we weren't any better after that one. So does that make it a good decision?

How is Chris Hughton still in a job? But I hate that Chris Wilder is being touted to take over from him. I would have Rooney out and Wilder in here in a heartbeat. Don't want Wilder joining that lot down the Brian Clough Way.

I agree angie but the actions we have seen taken at times by MM tells you all you need to know why the club is in the state it is in.
He thinks,or likes to think, that he can do what he likes when he likes but it has been proven he can't.

Are you really not capable of seeing why Keogh won his claim against the club, it is not just about being able to play football but that's all you seem to be focused on which is understandable in the same vein that MM did. Lawrence was culpable of causing the accident as was proved by the judiciary. Keogh wasn't able to carry out his contract due to the actions of a Third party.
I really can see the difference it is just you that cannot grasp it.

Ah, a drunken colleagues car, who, (it later transpired at court) had a reliance on alcohol. What about Lawrences' actions of turning down the clubs offer of a taxi. Perhaps he thought he was going to be drinking Orange juice or none alcoholic beer all night, somehow i don't think so.
If you are going to look at the actions of one person you also have to look at the actions of the other.

I can’t recall thinking that we got a good deal from the players we signed over the past five/six years. The closest probably being Curtis Davies or Tom Huddlestone though both arrived on top-end Championship wages and were only top-end Championship players for one season.
We’ve overpaid, and by quite a bit, for a good 80% of the signings made during Mel’s tenure.
We spent more on Tom Lawrence than Ward, Bryson, Russell, Martin, Forsyth, Keogh, Eustace, Grant, Buxton and Dawkins combined...
Literally our entire playoff 2013/14 team cost less than Tom Lawrence or Jacob Butterfield combined.

It CAN be tactical if you simultaneously change what you are doing, rather than simply bring another player on and ask him to try and do exactly the same thing.
Just taking someone off to prevent a further card is not evidence of astute tactical analysis for me.
