Logic like that doesn't work for some @Reggie Greenwood - easier to set up a fictional story that you can then tar everyone with as some sort of criminal for having fallen on harder times. Why bother to think about how society or infrastructure might have failed / could be improved when you can just blame them all for selling their free kettle or getting spiced out of their heads rather than go find a job?

I agree with you about the politicians who've weakened regulations, but you can't let the water companies off when they do things that they know full well are harmful or when they allow standards to fall so far that they're effectively poisoning people through negligence. 

I don't agree that it's in 'major decline', I think it's now heading in the right direction but will take a bit of time. The biggest thing that had to change and IS changing is having a resident population in the city centre - That's where regeneration comes from. For many many years the population of Derby city centre has been close to zero and that really shows, the building of new homes for professionals and students will have a huge impact in time. We're not alone on this front!

On a sunny day, take a stroll along the course of Markeaton Brook all the way up to the park - you'll pass a lot of history, see wildfowl in the brook and some wonderful trees in the park. Urban life at it's best. You can do similar walking from town through Darley Park all the way up to the Shiny Taproom at Little Eaton.
