I'm not sure Marriott was fazed by big occasions.  Scored 3 in the playoffs and had another cleared off the line in the final.  Frank just had the firestarter who's rocked up at Burton as a personal favourite and couldn't see past him.   Marriott was very effective with Mount.  He knew where to provide him with a pass.

Yes I'd agree with that ,I was alluding to Warne's comments that they'd hope to sign players who could cope with large crowds and the greater pressures that brings.

Reading  about Marriott it seems that he wasn't a hard worker in training and  had been criticised by 3 former managers regarding his attitude.I should imagine Warne is very thorough in getting feedback re a player's character.

  2. Never seen Alfie May play and he may or may not be a serious transfer target for us.I trust Warne's judgment and like the new signings so far but I appreciate, like all fans ,that we need quite a few more.I just hope that if he does sign then he's not another Jack Marriott whose stats were good before he came here but failed to live up to the hype. The player's mentality is as vital as their ability and whether or not they're fazed by larger crowds to do their stuff!

No, just pondering and thinking Harris might not be as bad a signing as this thread portrays.

Not really knowing the budget, if I was in Warnes shoes would I spend the money on Alfie May, or risk Harris with a Lucas Joao and another free transfer.  Not sure I'd want to go into the new season with May, Harris, Joao and Collins as I don't think there are enough goals in that strike force.

I'm getting splinters on my arse here - need convincing.

These days Football managers probably can't look long term, so if he thinks May will get us the goals for promotion then he's our man, but he gives us no re-sale value if we don't go up.

When Arthur spent Lionel's money I feel he always did it with a long term view, based on age and potential, and we recouped or sold for profit - nowadays managers don't have the time.

Has that made things clearer ?!

Great points but Mark Willington (33) and John Gregory(31) were probably the only exceptions to that but compensated with their experience .

what are the relative fees for midfielders in this division?

    anyone got any comparisons?

we can all throw around 4m but i dont think thats ever going to be in the case in this league unless you are talking about really top goalscorers

Should imagine it varies according to a players abilities, experience and length of contract.Personally,I'd be delighted ,if he has to go,if we could get £2m for him. That fee plus a saving on his wages would equate to £2.5m

Pleased that we have bought someone who speaks well. Makes me wonder why WhoScored and WyScout don't give marks for language and elloquence.

Anyway, back on topic, Callum Elder? Never heard of him.

They'd have had fun with ,errm,Wayne Rooney if they did!

Yeah agreed, those figures were set by the tribunal too. As to what criteria they consider I don’t know, could be they determine Knight’s number of appearances and international caps means he’s worth more to us than a 16 year old Harvey Elliott was to Fulham, however Fulham and Liverpool were both at a higher level than we are at that time and he was rated as one of the most exciting young players coming through, plus the “English” tax may come into it.
There’s no real way of saying what we’d get for Knight so the club has a choice I guess of taking as much money as they can now, or keeping him here and hoping either we go up and can extend his contract or when he leaves on a free we get a reasonable fee at that stage.
Sensible decision in my view would be to sell him now, spark a bidding war to get the price up as much as possible and add in a future sell on clause, then wish Knight well. Bank some of the cash and reinvest some.

    Isn’t it more a case of being objective when it comes to recruitment? Less “why”, more who, what, where, when, how;

    Who is available?

    Who are we interested in?

What would they offer the team?

    What would they cost?

How would they fit into the system?

How would they fit into the social dynamics?

    Where do they live?

    Where do they play?

    When are they available?

    When does their contract expire?

One player being a good signing for one team doesn’t automatically mean they’re a good signing for another team.

To us optimists and realists that post sums it up rather well .To the restless pessimists out there it'll be "bah humbug" time!

I had a look at different indicators and found similar, Dabo is a better defender - Clare is better on the ball.

On Josh Key, he's obviously built a decent reputation but statistically he's lacking in a lot of areas -

In terms of total actions and how many of them result in a positive and negative play - he sits at 54%. In comparison, Clare is at 69.6%. He has bad 'dual' win percentage at 43.5% whilst Clare is at 53.8%.  He also has a bad ball loss to recovery ratio which is something you wouldn't want in your full back - negative differential isn't a problem but his swing is quite large. The one upside is he doesn't tend to lose the ball in his own half a lot, which Sean Clare unfortunately does.

If we are going with a 3-4-3 formation next season then I'm still pushing for a full report on Remeao Hutton - He doesn't have the defensive experience of some of the others but in terms of ability at crossing the ball - he's one of the best in the football league.

For reference - he crosses the ball at twice the rate per 90 than Andrew Robertson and has a better cross accuracy to boot. It just depends on what we're looking for in our wing backs - it's unlikely we get everything so do we put more emphasis on a player who excels in putting in crosses or stopping crosses?

I'm quite happy for Paul Warne and the coaching staff to make that decision.

Generally players contracts run until the end of June so even out of contract players are still being paid at the moment, so they can sit back and see what’s on offer. Unless of course someone makes them an offer they can’t refuse.

We need to get someone like him on the recruitment team!
