At least we can enjoy the Beer festival if the football is crap

It is the last day of the beer fest so sometimes all they have left is the crappest beers. Charters also have their beer fest on over the road on the river.

Read it….and. You were bringing up sell on value. My point is we need not worry about it when we are not spending anything on fees plus if they help us get promotion our revenue will increase. No need for this fixation on sell on value in our current position.

It isn’t just about resale value though. An ageing team gets tired and cannot all play 2 games in a few days as is the case in this league. With a small squad and lots of 30+ aged players it’s not a good mix. As Warne highlighted last season, hence the reasoning behind changing that this season.

yes, a perfect situation to build a squad from scratch.

my frustration is we are no better off than we were then as we will be in the exact same situation next summer unless we go up

i would just like to see us build a long term squad instead of throw one together thatll be dismantled at the end of every season

I agree. But, last year I don’t think we had a choice. This summer, we have and we’re still signing 30+ year olds. If the rumours of Sharp are true then his help us. Warne says one thing then does another in terms of recruitment.

you know what winds me up is when you go down its with the view of oh we can finally rebuild properly.

we have done the opposite, weve assembled an ageing squad that already needs rebuilding and we just put it together. really poor recruitment overall since we have gone down.

I think last summer was decent given the circumstances. We had 5 players at the start of pre season, no scouting system or anything in place. We did well to recruit who we did.

This summer, those excuses don’t exist and we’ve still gone down the same route of recruiting ageing players. It’s a short term plan. I’m fine with that if we go up. But, if we don’t and we lose Cashin, Bird, Sibley etc. That’s a massive rebuild on a limited budget. I can’t for the life of me workout why he hasn’t recruited more pace and athleticism. It’s what a ‘Warne team’ is all about. People like Pennington we could’ve got from Shrewsbury rather than Blackpool. 28 and got 4 year’s minimum out of him. Would add a bit more to our back line.

Love watching bird play. Think with better players around him he’d not look out of place. Wasted at 10.

A real shame it’s getting to this point with the fans and a local lad.

He’s not exactly being vilified by thousands on a Saturday. It’s a few on here who are critical.

I like Bird, I think he’s very talented. He does suit a slightly more advanced position, but not a ‘10’. He wasn’t as good as I thought he’d be last season and needs to do better as he has the talent. But we’ve said that with a few players. It’s time they performed. It could be the manager to blame, teammates etc. but if Birds as good as I think he is, he’ll overcome that and be our best player. Time will tell if he’s capable.

Interesting to hear him almost admit that if we don’t get promoted this season then he could get sacked . We need stability and whilst he has been brought in as a League 1 promotion ‘expert’ I don’t want to see us changing mangers if we don’t manage it this season- much of the team still isn’t his and it will take another year to get that to that point - maybe a bit longer .

When he says that a couple of players he was after went to other League 1 clubs I’m sure one of those is Alfie May …

Man, he can talk ….. but a good interview albeit regurgitation of some stuff stuff we have heard before ..

Just because a manager doesn’t sign every player, it doesn’t mean it’s not his squad. Warne inherited a very good league 1 squad. He’s added to it this year. He will be judged on that this season. Failure to get promoted will be 2 failures in a row, not reaching the play offs being the first. Not many managers survive that. All irrelevant, as hopefully we smash it!

Have you listened to Warnes interview? It's on a thread on the main forum.

Would be easier if you had rather than answer piecemeal questions in isolation.

Yeah. Have you read my point earlier?

I don’t believe it’s a case of doing him a favour or because he’s Fozzies mate. How ridiculous. Do you actually believe that?

  8. 15 minutes ago, Tyler Durden said:

I didn't hear that in Warnes interview at all... I did hear that he knew Waghorn was without a club and still lived in the area so offered him use of our training facilities without any strings attached....

Why not do that earlier on in pre season though? He’s been a free agent all this time.

  9. It’s a bit farcical that Waghorn plays in a testimonial and then Derby realise he might be worth a punt. He’s been a free agent for weeks. Why didn’t we invite him in then? It’s no secret what he offers as a player. I thought Warne/recruitment had a list and went through the list one by one. For me, it’s not a great sign for our recruitment team.
I’m not against Waghorn signing, but the process seems bizarre and without much planning.

The fans being delighted is not really relevant to Warne to be fair. If the season starts and we are winning games the fans will soon forget about whatever happened in the transfer window. That's the bit Warne cares about.

Obviously. But until that happens, all we can comment on is how the window has gone so far. It’s clear we’ve had difficulty bringing in a forward and, for me, filling that position is key to our top 2 hopes. We didn’t score enough last year, Collins was average and we’ve only added Washington to the mix. Goals will hopefully be more spread out, but we need a quality addition up top in my opinion.

  11. 9 minutes ago, Andicis said:

Did we? We didn't have a proper fullback in the side. We had makeshift right backs and full backs (depending on what position you see Haydon Roberts being best in). We also lacked with centre halves, Curtis wasn't at his best, Chester never played. We couldn't play 3 at the back for large portions without proper wing backs or enough centre halves like Warne wanted to play.

We've lost some energy from Knight, but ultimately we have players who can act as runners. I'm not his biggest fan but Thompson covers a lot of ground.

What do you consider a decent forward that is a possibility for us to sign? I think we've got a striker in Collins who will score a lot more this year. He thrives off crosses into the box which we never provided him with last year, with our new fullbacks I'd expect him to score a fair few more goals. I'm sure that Mendez-Laing will grab a few too. I don't think we'll get another 25 goal striker like McGoldrick, but our squad is pretty good.

We had the 4th best defensive record in the league. Yes it was makeshift but we kept loads of clean sheets and generally were solid, despite the issues we faced with no right back etc. It went a bit south towards the end, but that was down to fitness. Over the season we didn’t concede many. Not doubting we’re stronger now though.
We need to get out of this league this year. No excuses. Are we much stronger overall than the end of last year, marginally maybe. I expected more. That’s why these next couple of signings will be key to our success and not sure, if it’s Waghorn, that would be enough. As someone said earlier, if you’d offered Washington, Colin’s and Waghorn as our top 3 options at the start of the summer I can’t see many fans being delighted with that.

  12. 1 hour ago, FlyBritishMidland said:

Agree with both of these.  At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, we’ve filled gaps in key positions.  The centre of defence is stronger.  We’ve signed wing backs, which in turn has strengthened the midfield as Smith and Sibley are now allowed to play in more natural positions.  Washington is a 1 in 3 striker at this level but he’ll stretch play and create space for Collins, the number 10’s to run into.  We’ll be more of a threat at set pieces, an area where we’ve been weak for a few seasons.

We now have a really strong defence.  This will bring confidence into the midfield who will be able to focus more on playing forward rather than leaving gaps behind knowing the defence has it covered.  This will have a knock-on effect on the strikers in allowing them to be more advanced.

    Agree, but…

We had a strong defence last year as well. It wasn’t a weakness apart from towards the end of the season when our oldies were all knackered.
My worry is we have lost the energy, legs and pace of Knight and not replaced that in midfield.
McGoldricks goals not replaced either. Yes we can spread it about more like you say, but we MUST sign a decent forward. For me, our season will depend on that. Top 2 has to be the aim and at the minute I’m not sure we’re strong enough as it stands. Time to go to correct that, but clearly this window hasn’t quite gone to plan in terms of attacking additions.

  13. 27 minutes ago, Andicis said:

How can it be a no from you without knowing what the other options are? Good strikers are notoriously difficult to get, especially in league one with no real ability to pay a fee. Personally I'm just trusting Warne will choose the best options available to him, if it happens to be Waghorn then so be it.

And yet we signed Collins and McGoldrick last summer with alot less prep than this summer. A forward has been a priority all summer, with or without McGoldrick. It’s not great that we still haven’t bought one in and now appear to be scraping the barrel. Our season kind of depends on it. No pressure!

  14. Stern John and Kenny Miller have to be the front 2. Maybe Beck to make a front 3.

Stern John got the worst ever reaction I’ve heard. Think he was subbed on in a game and the whole ground booed. It spelt the end for Phil Brown. Never heard a reaction like that before or since to a Derby player.

Kenny Miller I think got chased through the car park after the Reading game last game of the season. A season of frustration came out right then.

    Other players who got murmurs:

Ramage, Pickering, Keogh, Sturridge - weirdly in the promotion season.

"It has been evident that I want to play, ideally, with wing-backs. With Callum Elder being injured, Kane Wilson being down, and while Thommo has been excellent for me at left wing-back, he can't play 46 games there for me obviously.

"I think we could do with a bit more balance of bringing in another left-footed wing-back. If I can get a different one to Callum and a speedboat that's what I'll get.

"We need something up top and may be something more in the middle. Whether my budget will allow three excellent players, I am not so sure.

"It might just be two so it's what I need the most. I need a striker, but every club wants one. I still have players on my list that I am not sure who are going to improve us.

"I spoke to two Championship clubs this week and they're on their list. I am like he is on your list?! I went he's on my list and I am not sure he's good enough for us.

"It gets to the point where you don't want to be that guy, but you think something is better than nothing.

"There are two who I really like that I am trying to do. We can't sign the best strikers in League One currently because they are under contract and it will take big fees to get them out.

"So you're looking at players who have played at the Championship and while their age is not ideal but they will improve us. But the problem is and I would say 75 per cent of Champ clubs haven't got money for transfer fees so you're in the same shop as them.

"Hence why it's really difficult. There are three apples in the shop, but 30 clubs are chasing those three apples. That's where we are. Idealy I would get a nine, a 10 and another wing-back."

I appreciate Warne’s honesty here. But, if I was a prospective new signing, I’m not sure I’d appreciate hearing that your potential new manager may not be convinced you’re good enough.
It does point to Rhodes or someone similar. Not convinced he’ll be that good for us. I also would prioritise a 10 over a left wing back, unless Elder is crocked for a while.
We have to make use of the loan market. It’s key to any promotion. Time for Thomas et al to earn their crust. It’s not sounding overly promising if we’re so far down our striker list that Warne’s not convinced they’re good enough. Big few weeks ahead. Currently I don’t think we’re quite there.

They’re not proper injuries, just no point in risking them. Am sure if was a league game most of them would be fit.

agree on the squad looking well short though.

Probably not. But we seem to have more than previous years this year. The more games they miss in pre season, the less match fit they’ll be in 3 weeks.

  17. That squad tonight highlights how far we are off a team squad that is needed for top 2. Hardly any attacking options.

Also, we have picked up a lot of knocks/fitness issues. I know it’s inevitable during pre season. But to have about 5/6 out already seems quite high. Have they pushed them too hard?

I imagine there'll be quite a large number of people out there who think this is brilliant because it's so basic, even if it looks like it's been sewn by an apprentice at the local knicker factory.

I suppose it shows what people who want us to go back to blue shorts would actually get if we did.

Didn’t we do something similar in the mid 90s? Possibly for the 95/96 Puma kit. I have a vague recollection of voting for the kit in the Derby Telegraph but might be wrong. Either way it’s great that supporters get a say. Shame the sponsor ruins it though.

    But player costs are low.

A league up, our TV revenue will jump several fold but player costs more so.

The one thing going for us last year was so many players contracts were up when we were relegated.  I remember the issue with Portsmouth was when they went down they had loads of players on expensive multi year deals they could not reasonably pay.

@Ghost of Clough beat me to it! All of the sides you named have had disruption too. P’Boro will be in transition, doubt they’ll be near top 6 next season.
Nobody is saying we’re certs for the top 2. But, by the end of the window I expect us to have built up a very good squad for this league. Failure to get promotion this year will be a failure. We’ve never spent 3 seasons in the 3rd tier. Regardless of admin, we should be going all out for top 2. We can’t keep blaming admin for mediocrity. The clubs stable. Signings will be made. This season, with other teams disruptions, there is no better time to get promoted.
