  1. I’ve heard 2 snippets of this interview now, and in both Pearce avoids the question like a slimy politician. Yes the NDA’s are in place but there are certain things he can surely talk about. Pearce hides behind the NDA’s or just repeats the well documented line. Hopefully he reveals more, but I don’t hold my breath. I don’t trust him. He must be competent for Clowes to keep him on, but I’m not a fan.

Let's play the blame game then - who have you got in the frame for this?

How would I know? I’m not privy to finances, talks, offers etc. It’s poor though, you have to admit that?
I’m sure the club tried to bring players in, but it’s very poor planning again. Last summer was a farce at times too. The Waghorn signing being a prime example, signing after Forsyths testimonial. This window hasn’t gone to plan either. Warne admitted that last Jan cost us and left us short. That’s 3 windows where planning and recruitment have been questionable. In our position it’s more difficult, obviously. But, there are clear issues somewhere at the club. Even you must admit that?

I will be pished if we waste money earned from our youth development on a short term loan for a washed up oldie.  Please don’t let this happen

I can see it happening. The justification will be, we’ll be stronger at the end of the window than at the start. If the Bird money allows them to put it towards a loan fee for a Smith/Gregory then so be it. I doubt we have the time to negotiate for a younger prospect. I’d like to think they wouldn’t use all of the Bird money on a Smith/Gregory type. If we get promotion and end up in the Championship it’ll be worth the risk.

Peterborough have recalled the ex chesterfield striker I have a funny feeling JCH will be the player by 11pm

I very much doubt this too. P’Boro won’t help a rival out unless it’s at a massive premium. Wouldn’t be worth it.

Wheeldon only just stepped up to U21 football a few games before Christmas. Give him 12 months at that level before judging where to send him on loan. I don't think he's ready for first team game time.

Fapetu also only stepped up to U21 football his season. He's been a regular starter (helped by the occasional absence of DRobinson and Radcliffe being out for several months). He was regular contributor of goals and assists for the U18s last season, but has so far failed to contribute to a goal this season. Just like Wheeldon, he'll need another year or so at U21 level before he's loaned out. I wouldn't expect him to be involved in first team games until next season.

You mention loaning out these players before they get given a proper chance in the first team, but when was the last time this worked for us?

All of our successes from the academy have occurred without a loan. Riggott, Elliot, Hughes, Hendrick, Sibley, Knight, Bird, Cashin all went straight in. The last loan that worked for us was Sturridge over 25 years ago. With us being in League 1 and having a cat 1 academy, surely they should be ready for league 1 football now? Yes it’s a big step, but where is the evidence that loaning out works for us? Integrate them slowly with subs and cup games (EFL Trophy) whilst still getting top coaching should be the way ahead when in this league.

Yes, in his interview after the game with Radio Derby. Paraphrase… Reading had more players in midfield so he didn’t want our midfield to have more than two touches in case they got swamped type of thing..

Why didn’t we play  a 3 then? Thompson as a ‘10’ is bizarre. He doesn’t have the guile, touch or attacking prowess for an attacking role. He’s a hustler. That should have been utilised deeper to gain control of the midfield.

  7. I’ve defender Bird in the past, but my patience has gone. He should be dominating at this level. Instead he’s chasing shadows. Doesn’t contribute enough offensively or defensively. Powder puff. Can’t tackle. Poor. He’ll go in the summer. A lower champ team will take him. He needs to play in a 3 though. Him and Hourihane are getting done every time as a 2.

Did you watch his defending for the goal? He looked a bit lively going forward, is that what you mean?

Yeah he was massively exposed. 2v1, they had acres on that side. Not his fault though. He could’ve closed down a bit quicker, but the issue was how easy it was to switch the play and how much space they had with an overload to go with it. Derbys shape was shocking for that goal.

This makes me laugh. He's a fullback, Sky have just shown two of Readings attacks, one the goal. Both times Elder was nowhere in defence. There were other times too. But because he went forward a bit and made a pass or two he was MoM? 😄

It's who Warne plays and where.

Did you watch the game? Easily our best player. Only a 7/10 but decent. Best of a bad bunch

Dom Dietrich asked Warne if he’d go back in for the striker he’s bid for, he said we can’t change the bid so it’ll be a case of exploring other options. Sounds like we aren’t gonna fold to the Wendies demands.

The wage contribution is probably the maximum the EFL will allow us to pay. We’ve also lost some bargaining power now TJJ will be out. Desperation time!

To be honest if Joe isn’t put back in it just smacks of PW being stubborn and wanting to play the keeper he brought in on principle and nothing more …

Vickers wasn’t the problem tonight. He had little to do. I prefer Wildsmith too by the way. The problems lie elsewhere.

Chesterfield are playing tonight against decent opposition - be interesting to see if Dobra is involved. Looks a good player.

Heard it second or third hand that he is a complete twonk ......no idea if true.

Big step up though - as we saw with Tschimanga who was scoring 3 in 4 for Chezzy and hasn't scored a single goal since moving to league 1.

This window should be about improving the team now, not for the future. Dobra has 6 in 23 at national league level. That hardly screams out as an automatic first choice and an improvement on Wilson or Barkhuizen. Can’t see it myself.

Warne saying that we are so close to a couple of signings, reckons we will get at least 2 in at the top end. Says they're coming to be starters but if for some reason they're not as good as we think then they will have to wait their turn & will be squad players.

Also said tonight gives him some thoughts on who he might let go out too

Unfortunately Sibley may be one. He’s a shadow of what he was 3 years ago. Such a shame.

  14. I think it’s backfired us not playing some more youngsters now in this competition. We’ve learnt nowt from playing our first team players and now don’t have a final to fall back on. This was an ideal time to sound out the Weston’s, Robinsons, Browns and Fapetu.
The league was always the priority, but a final would’ve been nice. This was an ideal opportunity wasted to give some U18s/23s a go.

  15. It will be interesting to compare the fees received for Cashin and Ronnie Edwards at Peterborough. Edwards is very highly thought of and has reportedly had Palace and West Ham interested. Edwards looked a slightly classier version, quicker too. Posh normally get good value from their sales. Both could leave in the next 12 months.

Watched the new Ricky Gervais special last night on Netflix.

If I listed my top 20 comedy specials of all time, I think possibly all of his previous ones would be in there. And Animals and Politics would be in the top 3, but this felt like it was rushed at best and a cash grab at worst.

The material felt old and rehashed, and the constant need to explain himself (Jimmy Carr has started doing this, so maybe on a deeper level they are fearful of being taken literally) was a bit tiring.

There were some funny bits with the cultural appropriation joke very funny and clever, but I'm not sure I need to see him use the handjob action in any more specials. It was very funny the first time and pretty funny the second time, but now it feels/looks more like a metaphor for him milking the Netflix coffers.

I still love the guy and will watch his next one because even comedians have bad days at the office.

Agreed, it was very average. It seemed like he was trying too hard to shock. It also seemed like he was using the C bomb to get cheap laughs.  He’s not my fave stand up, his TV series work is better, Super Nature was class though. This was an extended, and poorer, version of that.

I wonder whether the last few weeks would have altered our approach to the window. We’re within touching distance of the top 2 now, so if we have a good transfer window, there’s no reason we can’t make it.

I don’t think we will, or want us to take a gamble by overspending. That would be deja vu when it doesn’t pay off.

But last window, our additions were ineffective and our season ended up with nothing.

I think if we can avoid being weakened, even if it means Cashin is sold but loaned back, then that’s one big step. We need someone who is a reliable option to swap for Collins, if he got injured, we probably can’t rely on TJJ, Waghorn or Washington to lead the line for a run of games. If we can also get another winger, as other than NML we seem to be very wasteful in this area, then we should hopefully be alright.

I think people need to stop panicking about overspending. We’re never going to do that now.
I hope plans haven’t changed. We made the mistake last year thinking we had enough, and didn’t. We need a wide man and a centre forward as a minimum. If those 2 are quality, I’ll be happy with just that. We need to be ruthless in the second half of the season. Top 2 is on. It’s up to us to smash it.

Good performance, excellent result, well deserved.

A word for Barkhuisen - probably his best game in some while. He had the full back on toast in the first half, despite being assaulted at least twice, and that was a top assist. We looked noticeably weaker down our left once he was subbed, particularly defensively. Maybe he didn’t have 90 minutes in him, but he played well.

Thought Hourihane put a real shift in, as did Collins, but that almost goes without saying. Bird was good, again. Our two centre halves look as solid as a rock.

The real difference was that there was always an option for the man in possession. Movement off the ball is so important and we were really good at that today.

All in all an excellent Boxing Day out with my Son.

A good win and the perfect away performance for the first hour. We looked the real deal today, good to see.

A word on Barkhuizen. He’s good, but abysmal at finishing. He needs to be chipping in with 8-10 goals a season. He’s awful in this department. For me, this is a priority position on Jan. Wilson has been superb, but he’s a converted wingback playing higher up, he doesn’t look comfortable scoring either. Our wide players should be chipping in more. Hopefully Warne brings someone in to help this area.

Great win though, Cashin and Nelson imperious. Class acts at this level.
