But he wouldn't be gifting it to 'the club'; he'd be gifting it to the shareholders who will own the club and who could easily be flipping it again in a couple of years for millions of profit.
If he wanted to be philanthropic, he'd be better gifting it to a community trust - a bit like the Chelsea Pitch Owners set-up.

If I were in Mel's shoes (and assuming he has the skin of a rhino) I'd be looking to buy the club back out of admin for £30m.

Expect to start hearing the usual jungle drums beating their rhythm of doom at about 6pm on Thursday. That gives the EFL Board members enough time to have had a pee following the four-hour round-the-table chinwag and get on the phone to Mr Nixon.

In actual fact, EFL Board Meetings are always scheduled for the last Thursday of the month, so this is probably true.
Does this mean an announcement on April 1st??... perfectly scripted if that is the case!

I suspect Quantuma themselves admit they have not got every call they have made right, but that in no-way equates to mis-management.
A small team of non-industry specific business professionals were parachuted in to a high-profile, distressed and financially compromised business and are being castigated for not turning it around in six months.
It's like blaming Road Traffic Officers for the delay to your journey.... and not the 10-vehicle pile-up they are slowing down the traffic to avoid!

I think people have the wrong idea about the phoenix club option.
It won't be fan owned or fan instituted. There won't be different versions - they would be rival new clubs.
What will happen is The Derby County Football Club Ltd will go into liquidation. The new owner will buy the name 'Derby County Football Club' and all the associated trade marks and rights. They will then be owned by a new company who will run a team which will be called Derby County Football Club, have the same badge and be indistinguishable from the existing club. The new club will be entirely free of all the liabilities of the old.
The new owners will have to negotiate a league to play in and a stadium and training ground to use. The noises indicate League 2 is the most likely league. It would be surprising if some deal couldn't be stuck for Moor Farm and Pride Park.
Then there's the small matter of needing a squad. All the existing players would have been either released or had their registrations sold by the EFL to pay off the footballing debts. I suspect a few of the released players would sign for the Phoenix club, but we'd still need 95% of a new squad.
It would still be Derby County in sight, sound and feel though. The interesting question is, would we still count as founder members of the league? Do Accrington Stanley? I think we would if we told everyone we were.

In my opinion, the only attractive thing about being a Phoenix club would be the opposite.
It would give us a chance to be a truly fan owned club, not beholden to the whim and whimsy of a passing businessman, but a truly fan driven project, that spent what it earned and not a penny more.
If that model could only take us so far, and I suspect at this moment it would only be an occasional flirtation with the Championship, so be it.
It would be our club again, for the first time in many decades.
Our success would depend on our engagement of both the local community, and pulling in fans from farther afield looking for something different in the cesspit of football generally.
We have a fanatical local fanbase, a fading but still resonant history, a reasonable ground if it can be reunited with the team that currently play in it!
We shouldn't be looking at becoming a Mike Ashley's Newcastle pt II, we should be aiming for an English version of St Pauli.

What's the betting that Kirchner buys Preston then - knowing the DCFC inside track - sweeps in to pick up our best youngsters for peanuts?

Absolutely. The Administrators have marketed the club to all and sundry but if the hole left to fill is just too big, that is not their fault.
I think they are giving it their very best shot to find a way out that leaves the Club in the best position possible - which in turn will result in the best outcome for creditors - and only when that process is absolutely exhausted will they go to plan B and take what they can. Given that it would appear the Club has sufficient funds to play out the season, they will probably feel they still have time to keep searching. Or perhaps more accurately, arm twisting current interested parties to get above the viability line.
