  1. Wildsmith

    Wilson   Nelson   Cashin   Elder

    Bird   Hourihane   Thompson

    Barkhuizen   Collins   Mendez-Laing

Subs: Vickers, Bradley, Ward, Sibley, DRobinson, DBrown, John-Jules

Vickers hasn't done enough to prove why he should be in the team ahead of Wildsmith.
Elder needs to build on his first start.
Out current version of 442 lacks balance, hence a change to 433. If Forsyth was fit, I would be starting Sibley at AM. However, he'll be needed at LB to finish the game so a place on the bench it is.

Elder, Ward, Bradley, Fornah and a terminally injured Waghorn and Washington.  That's a lot of wages, probably very good ones at this level, injured or not playing.  If I was chairman I'd be reticent about spaffing fees and wages on players with that track record of signings.  Think we'll only be going so far, funds available or not.

Since Mark Thomas contractually couldn't work for our club until the summer, it's possible that our summer signings were predominantly Warne signings. With a few months to settle in and set his team up, I would expect recruitment to improve going forward - this could be possible mitigation towards Warne with regards to not having the tools available to do the best job he possibly could.

The players we've been linked to this window appear to be more Mark Thomas targets than the summer signings.

This is my original point CBT is not a bad player but I stick by original post and say I don't think he's worth 500K and who says he's in demand ? If decent Championship clubs wanted him we would probably be out of the equation but from what I've been hearing  only a lower champ side is interested and I'm not sure at this stage if he'd shine in the championship so 500k would seem like a lot if he's only good enough to contribute to us getting out of L1

If it was say Brannagan from Oxford for 500K I'd be saying different and go for it because he does look really good  and think he'd still be good in a league higher but this is only my opinion of course based on what I've seen but CBT is a gamble and I personally would only go to 300K maybe 350K at a push , I think he'd be a better option than Wilson so would mean he'd be on the bench

For reference, we paid £350k for Ben Davies over 10 years ago and felt it was reasonable value for money.

    So Warnes post match points

    - Wouldn't deny we’re going for CBT (obvious I know)

    - JJ is staying till the end is the season

    - he’s going to watch a player he wants tomorrow night.

my top guesses for players tomorrow night are Owen Moxon and Davis Keillor-Dunn.

A few possible clubs he'll be watching - Mansfield, Carlisle, Wigan, Chesterfield

I imagine as a club we’re by no means unique in this but I find it striking the number of instances of this or similar in relatively recent history.

Jakobsen seems to have been an error, Elsnik and Ravas maybe but hard to judge the level. Then you have nearly stories like this one - plus I think I’ve read similar with Ebosele and Archie Brown?

I suppose it shows how hard it is to judge players. Mindless speculation obviously but part of me wonders a little if Wassall’s departure was related to this sort of thing.

Another I can think of is Freddie Draper who was released at 16. Still only 19 now and had 10 goals and 3 assists in his 21 L2 games at Walsall. Recalled by Lincoln last week.

It's a slow day at work (tbh it's been a slow year so far) so.... OK, Done!

There have been 40 different teams promoted from League One in the past 20 seasons. 26 of these teams currently find themselves playing at Championship level or above (8x Prem, 18x Champ) with 14 at League One Level or below (8x L1, 3x L2, 3x National League)

CH or > - Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion, Crystal Palace, Luton Town, Nottingham Forest, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sheffield United, Blackburn Rovers, Bristol City, Coventry City, Huddersfield Town, Hull City, Ipswich Town, Leeds United, Leicester City, Millwall, Norwich City, Plymouth Argyle, Preston North End, Rotherham United, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Sunderland, Swansea City, West Bromwich Albion

L1 or < - Barnsley, Blackpool, Bolton Wanderers, Burton Albion, Charlton Athletic, Peterborough United, Wigan Athletic, Wycombe Wanderers, Colchester, Doncaster Rovers, Milton Keynes Dons, Scunthorpe United, Southend, Yeovil Town.

Teams who've been promoted but relegated after their 1st season - Charlton, Doncaster, MK Dons, Peterborough (x2), Rotherham (x2) Scunthorpe, Southend, Wigan (x2), Wycombe, Yeovil.

Teams who've been promoted but relegated after their 2nd season - Barnsley, Burton, Colchester, Luton, Peterborough, Scunthorpe

Just from that limited info I wouldn't say that most of the teams coming back down within/after 2 seasons struggled in the Championship because of their style of play resembles that of the stereotypical League One team?

Your 03/04 has the teams promoted to the Premier League. It should be Plymouth, QPR, Brighton - Brighton relegated after 2 seasons

Sorry, meant to post this one and couldn't remove video above.

"There were academy representatives who said we think you'll have a good career, maybe in non-League or at National League level, if you work hard.

I don't know how anyone came to that conclusion after watching him at U18 level. In his first year, he scored 5 goals in 17 games as we clinched the U18 title, then scored 2 and assisted 2 the following year as we went on our European adventures. We then almost released him before opting for a short contract the season prior to our administration.

I imagine if he was going back then word would've seeped out by now. My guess is negotiation is underway and we'll find out this week he's staying til the end of the season.

Warne already confirmed negotiations are underway - offers, counter-offers, counter-counter-offers, etc...

That would be a huge drop off in quality and leave us with very little reliable squad depth. And we’ve seen last season how costly that can be. I just don’t think it’s a sensible strategy given the density of games at this level. You’d need to have academy as good as ours was before administration ripped it apart in order to make it work.

Vickers > Evans - Vickers has featured for just 130 minutes in the league. We lost the first game and won the 2nd 3-1. I don't think using Evans instead would have cost us anything
Ward > Bardell - At RB Bardell would be a more reliable defender. Overall a big drop off in quality and Bardell is an injury risk, but we would still have Wilson as RB/RWB cover anyway
Fornah > DRobinson - 763 mins in the league. I personally consider Robinson to be low end L1 level anyway, and I would have included him in my first team squad rather than sign Fornah in the first place.
Washington > Weston - 497 mins may be pushing it a bit for where Weston is at
John-Jules > Brown - only 201 mins in the league... The amount of football I would expect from Brown at this level anyway

If we were in this league for another season, I would definitely be including more academy players in my first team squad. Cox and Radcliffe joining the 'academy' options.

  10. 1 hour ago, Millenniumram said:

Yeah I realise that now, but I still don’t really agree with it - you’d need a very strong academy to produce 8 League One quality players that you can rely on to provide your squad depth at this level.

We already have Rooney, Thompson and Sibley who  I would put in that group. Put Evans, Bardell, Robinson, Weston and a Brown in for Vickers, Ward, Fornah, Washington and John-Jules and you have your 8. There's obviously a drop off in quality at this point in time, but it's not as if 4 out of the 5 I listed have had much game time in the league anyway.

  11. Based on the players Warne includes in his first team squad...

Group 1 (good enough to be a Championship regular): Wildsmith, Nyambe, Nelson, Cashin, Bird, Mendez-Laing

Group 1.5 (good enough to be a regular in a top 6 team): Forsyth, Hourihane, Collins

Group 2 (top 6 squad players): Vickers, Ward, Wilson, Bradley, Elder, Fornah, Barkhuizen, John-Jules, Washington, Waghorn

Academy (graduates not yet regular starters): Rooney, Thompson, Sibley

None of the above: Loach, Smith

Difficult to say until we get the accounts back, but seems low to me - I’d be surprised if our wage bill is less than £10m for this season. I’d say it’s likely to be well in excess of that.

I would put it closer to £12m than £10m. Our playing staff wages will be one of the highest in the division, but I reckon our non-playing staff wages are THE highest. Charlton, Portsmouth and Bolton in the same wage bracket, Oxford just behind.

According to Transfermarkt...I know...3 teams have spent fees in L1 this season. Barnsley, whose sales massively exceed expenditure, Bristol Rovers, and Charlton who have just podded the lad from WHU. I think the evidence is there.

According to Transfermarkt, there are also 'unknowns' (undisclosed) for Blackpool, Bolton, Burton, Cambridge, Carlisle, Cheltenham, Exeter, Fleetwood, Leyton Orient, Lincoln, Oxford, Peterbrough, Portsmouth, Port Vale, Reading, Shrewsbury, Stevenage, Wycombe, and ourselves.

Northampton and Wigan the only clubs who aren't listed.

Neither are promotion rivals, but I didn't think it was worth its own thread.

It'll be interesting to see how the EFL deal with the Reading v Port Value abandonment. Reading's official Twitter put out on more than one occasion that they'd risk serious sanctions if the fans didn't leave the pitch, ultimately they didn't and the game was abandoned.

It's relevant for us, because of course we're their next home game. I don't know if there's been any precent set on this sort of thing before, but if they ultimately end up awarding Port Vale the 3 points, then it'll be interesting to see if Reading fans do the same against us, as they'd know they're risking another loss.

I think it's more likely to be a fine and/or points deduction with the game to be replayed at a later date, in which case any who are heading to Reading, I hope you get to see the full game...

Around 50 of them stayed on the pitch for just over an hour
