This season we have zero pace anywhere in the team ( mendiz not being allowed to play out wide)

this season we have changed the defence to 3 centre backs who can’t defend or pass the football to a team mate and we have sold two good full internationals and look like selling two decent experienced youngsters

this season we look completely clueless on the pitch but then again we have signed players who might have been promoted a few times but they definitely have been relegated plenty of times as well

I want to see some players signed that are a taking a step up in their career. They have a bit to prove. The players we are signing are taking a step down.

I just looked through the squad and we are very light in the CM position. If bird is out injured (or gone) we only really have 2 genuine CMs.  I am amazed we haven't signed players in this position. No wonder we are struggling. We've lost knight and now looks like bird. Can we really play in the current formation being so weak in the centre.

Two full international players. Knight is one but I'm struggling for the second we sold?

Wilson looks a decent signing and Waghorn is Waghorn, very good on his day, unfortunately his day tends to be Feb 29th.

Yet strangely enough, Waggy has one goal and one assist from a very few minutes on the pitch. Odd that for a player who only performs on 29th Feb.

Played at the World Cup 😉

I did get who the original poster meant in the end. However, Bielik is not relevant to this thread as he went on loan to Blues before the season started. He was not part of the opening day squad.

Which one was the best?

Minus

McGoldrick, Knight, Chester, Strearman, Davies, Dobbin, Osula, Anang, Roberts

Add

Ward Wilson Bradley Waghorn Washington Vickers Nelson Elder

Found this blast from the past.

Fortunately we were able to add TJJ, Fornah, Embleton, Nyambe, Adams, CBT and Gayle.

It seems like the EFL restrictions being eased helped.

Oh we were still under restrictions then!

Credit to Warne for being able to do that sort of business on a shoelace budget

It's a miracle. Biggest budget in the league on a shoelace budget. I heard he also catered for the end of season dinner with 5 loaves and 2 fish.

Is that one of those facts you get in the bible or one of yours?

Either way credit to Warne for getting them all fed!

Next season's squad will certainly be interesting.

We're free of the league-agreed business plan, the level of obstruction and the impact it had on us in practical terms still very much debatable, but we'll still be working toward the aim of being sustainable and unlike in League One this past season we'll really have to make sure that we get value for money with our signings.

The starting lineup & bench come August 2024 will consist about 70-80% of players brought to the club by Warne, he won't be able to rely on the bulk of our minutes being played by those he inherited like he has this season, where his signings have contributed to an average of just 27% of our total minutes played, with 10 of his 15 signings contributing less than 30%.

Ultimately this season the means have justified the end, nearly all of the players have contributed at least something valuable to the cause, which speaks well of the preparedness of players even when they're dropping in and out, and we've achieved what we set out to achieve but I'd suggest it's rather unlikely we'll be able to get away such wastage next season.

Written down, it's difficult to argue that we were held back by the amount of money spent of pre-Warne signings or that they contribute a significantly higher sum to our wage bill than the players brought in this season.  In terms of VFM there's a clear distinction. That being said, you can say that it's to Warne's credit he got the most out of the players he inherited.

Hopefully there are more signings like Nelson & Adams to come, but we'll face far stronger competition for them without having the pull of being the biggest club in the division. News of us scouting abroad is encouraging, especially if it helps us find those players not on everybody else's radar.

We'll probably need to bring in a core of maybe 7-8 new players all capable of contributing to 60-80% of our minutes, if not higher IMO.

A big summer ahead, no doubt.

Interesting, Embleton, TJJ, Washington, Fornah, Waghorn and Elder played combined played less minutes than Cashin.
