So .. we’ve got an old Dyson, well 2 actually cos one is mother in laws. They are old models in working order but have seen better days. Too heavy for the ladies of the house and have been taking up space.

so I’ve just flogged them on Facebook .. buyer paid a tenner each. They came and collected them, I switched them on let them feel the suction and off they go happy.

Now they are contacting me and saying they don’t  pick up and can they bring em back and have their money back.

i have said try cleaning the roller but I’m not Curries, they were a tenner each and what do you expect.

I’m no cowboy, yeah the pick up isn’t great but they suck well and are in good nick considering their age and 10 quid isn’t exactly over the odds for a functional piece of kit.

I’m left feeling like someone thinks they’ve been “done” which isn’t nice, but my conscience is clear. They are I think “as described”

should I stick to my guns or give in for a quiet life ?

Sold as seen mate.

They sound like a couple of chancers. Basically just trying to borrow an up market appliance.

Stand firm ?

Thanks both of you. @ramit and @HantsRam

i really am old fashioned and think fair play is very important. In my book a good deal is when everyone is happy so there is a vague uneasiness when you think the other party feels “done” ..

but flipping eck 10 quid and they work and a new vac is like 200. I know I’m right and straight but at the same time I know they are sitting there in their slightly weird world thinking I’m dodgy. I described them as “in working order but seen better days”

Sounds straight up to me jono.

You'd think they might go online and do a bit of troubleshooting and possibly look for some spare parts given they only paid a tenner.

Like you say - if you're charging 100 quid then different gravy but like so many things, people just get completely detached from reality sometimes. ?

i believe in fairness in business and would never want to flog a useless item onto the unsuspecting, but i learned in my former hobby of collecting, buying and selling postage stamps that the responsibility is mainly on the buyer.

Erase all doubts on this matter from your mind

It's not as if they bought it blind

You are honest fair and kind

Buying second hand privately does still require the goods to be sold as advertised.

So if you buy a second hand car advertised as a 1.3 escort and find out its a 1.1 then you have every right to try and return it.

Actually returning it is a different matter as if both parties dont agree then small claims court is needed.

So in your case i cant see someone going to that trouble. And for all you know they are trying to vacuum a filthy carpet which would make it difficult to pick up.

I might be tempted to just let them return them. Depends how you feel they may react, dont want a brick through your window.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they worked well for a while and then stopped sucking. Tell him to clean the filter and what not - bet it works afterwards

Very common that.

Indeed.  Once it starts hoovering up the wedding cake, it starts to get clogged up, loses suction, and is never the same again!
