Climate change: 'Hothouse Earth' risks even if CO2 emissions slashed

Just the inevitable consequence of raising CO2 levels from around 280ppm in the 19th century to 410ppm today.  Greenhouse gases in an atmosphere will warm a planet up, that's been known for a long time and there is no point in people denying it or ignoring it any longer.  It's a fact.

We either stop putting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere right now and figure out how to remove some of what we've already added, or we are just leaving our children and grandchildren with the nightmare scenario of runaway global warming.

Really, some scientists disagree.

Could just be the normal earth cycle of warming and cooling.

Bloody hell first decent summer for years and the tree huggers are out in force .The government doesn't need any more excuses to tax us into oblivion.Last summer we had like this was 1976 ffs .

Not at all.  Weather cycles change. Ice age etc.

Of course the climate changes, but if you think that somehow proves that humans cannot also change the climate by their own actions then you are very much mistaken.

Some of those natural climate changes you refer to would be utterly catastrophic for human civilization if they were to happen now.  The point is that we should not create unwelcome climate change by our actions in our era.

Why, when talking about global warming do people keep on saying things like 'Climate changes all the time', and think they are saying something relevant or profound?  No climate scientist would ever dispute that, it's a long established fact and the reasons for it are well known.  But it is an entirely irrelevant point to bring up when discussing the negative implications of the current anthropogenic climate change.

2003

The highest temperature ever recorded in Britain was set during the sizzling summer of 2003, when the 100-Fahrenheit mark was broken for the first and only time.

The mercury soared to 38.5C (101.3F) at Brogdale, near Faversham, Kent, on August 10, smashing the previous 1990 record of 37.1C (98.8F).

Across Europe, around 70,000 people are believed to have died during the worst heatwave on the continent for almost 500 years.

All of what I've said is supported by ample proof, if you care to research it yourself.  Which parts do you disbelieve and why?

Nah, can’t be arsed. Anyway that’s why you are here, otherwise what would be the point.

Just going out for dinner. Might have the fish again..

We could remove carbon dioxide now if we wanted to. There are also alternative measures we could take to try and cool the planet, but we aren't fully clear on some of the side effects as of yet. We don't understand it fully enough and so aren't quite desperate enough (not yet at least) to implement any of them.

We can't just "stop" putting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere either. Renewable energy isn't at the point where we could be supplied by that alone yet and to be honest I don't think it ever will be without fusion. However solar panels have been making significant advances in recent years and should be starting to play more and more of a role in the energy mix. It won't help when all the cars become electric either and you are going to struggle to get any of the poorer countries outside of maybe China to start really investing in renewable s at the moment even with international finds available.

Yeah, I agree @GenBr and it's true we can't stop emitting carbon instantly, but being carbon neutral at least should be the urgent goal. Why are you saying that switching to electric cars won't help (provided the electricity grids are supplied by renewables)?

Yeah fusion is the holy grail right now.

Last day of the heatwave, about time!

Normal service will be resumed tomorrow.

Met Office with a feels like temperature of 15c at kick off for Derby v Leeds, bootiful.

Shame.

Had my picnic hamper, napkins at the ready to smuggle in my rucksack, glass of wine etc for a nice picnic in the West Stand. Would have saved the catering queues.

Give it a few weeks and we will all be cursing how long it takes to serve the hot choc again.

Why am I not surprised that you can't be arsed?  As you don't understand climate and our effect on it....you are better off staying out of the discussion. Background reading required I reckon.

That's not to be too critical I'm equally ignorant on a wide variety of subjects.  It's having some idea of what you know and what you don't know is the key.  Enjoy the fish.
