Injuries, suspensions and patience

Yep , yet again sheer old crap luck is playing a massive part in our results and potential ,,,,,, we have a talented squad but what we need more than anything is a settled side and in the main Mac is trying to achieve that but it obviously difficult as we are a team that wants and needs pacey ,direct forward thinking wing backs ,,,,, at this point we are scraping by on one single defensive full back to our name ,, we are chopping and changing midfield through injuries and suspensions and then trying to get a front line firing from quite different types of forwards that we are used to ,, as a result any squad player coming into the first team is having to try to cement a place around all this upheaval coupled with the managerial/ formation/style that we have gone through over the last couple of seasons ,,,, I think we will see some of these written off players performing far better and giving Mac selection headaches if we can get a settled team out there playing in the way Mac wants us to play

Absolutely right, we've been hammered by injuries in certain positions and it's not as easy as saying we've got a big squad with adequate replacements, we're now down to 4th choice and beyond in a couple of positions, quality is bound to drop.

Add this into the fact that players have had to move about a bit in midfield and the players coming in are sometimes struggling to work their way into the system of our play and it's obvious that we were going to encounter some levels of difficulty in finding our way in recent games.

However hopefully with some new signings and players coming back we can bring back balance to the team and start moving forward again, and like you say with time players written off may adapt to our system and start to prove themselves as Johnson has already done this season.

Well looking on here you would think your wrong. Relegation is looming.

I can't understand how it isn't so obvious to everyone else right?

Losing to a couple of relegation threatened sides in the last couple of weeks eh? Getting hammered by those local rivals down the road? Conceding every week at the iPro? (I'm holding on to the name)

DANGER WILL ROBINSON

The injuries to left back... 3 of them is bad luck.

Im not sure about some of the rest.

Could just be we arent as good as you think. (Just as we werent as bad at least in general play as people think under Pearson).

We have had plenty of good luck in the unbeaten run, home games against leeds and wednesday spring to mind.

Aswell as some bad luck recently. If we can consistantly find an attacking threat from someone other than Ince then we have a chance to gatecrash the playoffs, if not... then we will fall short.

Every club has injuries and suspensions and we've spent an awful lot of money over the past couple of seasons in an attempt to combat the effects of this. I agree that we seemed to benefit from a lot of luck in the unbeaten run and that the results masked a lot of the performances. We will finish where we belong, regardless of good or bad luck

Wasn't really gauging it totally on results but more of a performance type of thing, I agree that we can over estimate how good we are and also how bad we are ,

I was seriously shell shocked after Leeds. I couldn't get to grips with how outplayed we were for most (not quite all!) of the game. I had a huge sulk on on Sat. We need some fit players back ASAP

Yep the results and performances against Norwich and Leeds were like a kick in the nuts just when we looked like getting on track for a real play off push ,getting wins and Mac at the helm making me confident he could reproduce the performances he got in his first spell given time and rising confidence levels ,, we are struggling to get anywhere near those heights and looking in the cold light of day when the match passion subsides I have to say injuries and suspension s are playing a major part , we need those wingbacks exploding forward with pace or at least having the threat to do that when teams press us high otherwise we are left passing across the back line slowly with the two options of trying to play through a congested midfield or punt a long ball with no real accurate ball players in our back 5 ,,, people keep banging on about team spirit but for me it's not that ,it's having a settled team with all the cogs in place to play the way we want to and until we get a run with those conditions we will stutter ,, gets right on my tits but what can you do?

Steve McClaren says there’s light at the end of the tunnel for Derby County on the injury front.

Derby have been hampered by a number of injuries either side of the New Year, particularly in defence.

However, Cyrus Christie, Marcus Olsson and Ikechi Anya have all resumed full training.

Christie has been out of action since early November after breaking a bone in his foot, while Olsson and Anya picked up hamstring injuries over the Christmas period.

McClaren has also hinted that Olsson could make an immediate return to action in Saturday’s home game against Reading, purely down to the fact no other specialist left-backs are available to call upon.

He also hopes that Max Lowe and Nick Blackman aren’t far away from resuming full training, while Bradley Johnson and Jacob Butterfield are due to return to the fold next week after suspension.

McClaren told RamsTV: “Cyrus Christie has been training every day this week.

“We’ve also got Marcus Olsson and Ikechi Anya back in training as well which is pleasing.

“We do need a left-back back in there and there’s a chance Marcus might some straight back in.

“They’ve got a couple of days under their belts and slowly we’re starting to get people back.

“Max Lowe and Nick Blackman aren’t far away as well now.”

McClaren is of the belief that by the end of the month, he will have a stronger squad to call upon.

He is eyeing having a number of bodies back in the squad following next Friday’s Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round tie at home to Leicester City.

He said: “After the Leicester game next Friday we should, all things being equal, have a fully fit squad to choose from – apart from the long term injuries.

“We have a tough February and second half of the season ahead of us, so it will be good to have a number of bodies back.”
McClaren has also revealed that new signing David Nugent is a doubt for Saturday’s home game against Reading.

The striker sustained a minor knee injury on his debut at Leeds United last Friday and is having his fitness assessed by the medical team.

McClaren explained: “It’s disappointing for David Nugent that he tweaked the medial ligament in his knee at Leeds.

“He’s not trained, had a scan and a small injection which we hope will settle it down in a day or two.

“We’ll assess him ahead of Saturday.”

Can @archied please stop with these kind of posts, please? It's most insensitive to the majority of forum users who come on here to moan and tell us that none of the players are fit to wear the shirt. Browsing through articles like this just don't give me the suicidal feeling that I'm looking for when I log on. Imagine my shock at ready a perfectly rational and realistic thread - it almost made me want to get back to doing actual work.

But, yes, completely agree. It's a drum I've been banging for a long time. Consider where we were when Mac took over and where we are now. Yes, couple of bad results but, come on, perspective! And, ever since he took over we've had an unbalanced squad missing so many vital components - something which has been exaserpated in the last few weeks.

I could go on. And on. But the original post sums it up well enough anyway so I'll spare you my opinions. Now, let's get back to some proper depressing, over the top nonsensical thread, shall we? This just won't do.
