My diet is hurting a few brewers at the moment. Just think of it as 'building up a thirst'.

I really wish there was a pub in Derby that sold anything like their selection of beers.

'Dubbed the “Beer Capital of Britain”, Derby is able to boast the largest number of real ales per head of population, more than 120 real ale pubs, several micro-breweries, and annual CAMRA Beer Festivals.'

'Lonely Planet magazine listed Derby in its top ten listing of the world’s “must see attractions” for its real ale trail – an accolade which came just a couple of months after the Good Beer Guide named it The First City for Beer, with the ‘Perfect Pub Crawl’ in Britain.'

Thanks for the information.

Whilst I like many 'real ales' (and 'real lagers' too), the current obsession with over-hopped out-of-balance beers leaves me cold. Thwaites Original, Ringwood Old Thumper, Sam Smiths Old Brewery Bitter, Robinsons Old Tom, Marstons Pedigree etc are fantastic beers - but 'experimental' beers which use IBU as a selling-point point don't interest me at all.

Quite agree. I am hopeful that more traditional best bitters are making a comeback, with some of the 'heritage' beers like Offilers.

One good side effect of the prevalence of citrusy pales is that it's forced me to try more dark beers, and I've discovered some lovely stouts and porters.

I am mostly ignorant of the Belgian beers you recommend though, and don't know how easy they are to find in Derby.

@sage could point you in the direction of which pubs in Derby sell Belgian beers. I went in the Brunswick a few years ago and the only Belgian beer they had was Leffe, which is very much an entry-level beer.

I have just downloaded the Alexandra Hotel bottled beer list, and they do have some fine Belgian beers, so I will pay them a visit (they also sell the Memsahib's favourite, Corsendonk Agnus).

The Alexandra, Brewery Tap and Blacksmiths Lounge have the biggest Belgian range as far as I know.

There is a good Belgian bar in Leek and there will be what sounds like an amazing 300 bottle selection place opening in Ashbourne later this year.

And no I didn't take this photo after drinking my delivery.

Mmmm. Barista Chocolate Quad. Also, do I see 6 bottles of Westy in the top left hand corner (once the photo has been oriented to landscape)?

You do indeed. Will bring one plus a St Bernardus 12 to the next cricket game. Just for research

Excellent. I shall bring something different - probably a Winter Wood for a start. No Pannepot, unfortunately - Kurt tried to get me some but they are as rare as rocking-horse droppings at the moment.

I got the Memsahib 24 bottles of Triple Karmeleit, so I'm in her good books at the moment.

How so? I've not been yet so can't comment, but it was opened and is owned by a friend of a friend -- it's called Beer Trap. The idea of it sounds good.

It's a beer shop that you can drink in. There is already a specialist beer and wine shop in Belper.

They can't sell draught beer as they don't have a toilet. This also limits how long you would stay there.

The drinking area is tiny. Any more than 5 people in their drinking or shopping and you are bumping into each other.

The door is left open next to a very busy road. The beer is very expensive. They try to sell Belgium/European beer without the product knowledge for this specialist market.

Their opening hours are that of a shop not a bar.

Their is never anyone in when i go past.
