Dead ball stuff

I am wondering what if anything Mac is going to do to address our 'issues' with dead ball routines....

Whether it was a free kick a penalty or a corner, we seemed to be at a loss to do anything positive with most of them, yes Martin hit a cracker of a free kick, and converted a couple of penalties, but overall like at Wembley with our 14 corners which came to nowt, we were woeful with dead balls (cue 'oh er missus comments') last season, and Im sure Albert or someone better than me with stats can show how many points we dropped last season if our ratio was on a par with others at the top of our league....

Do we need another 'Idiakez', a dead ball 'specialist' ? I remember the buzz of anticipation when he lined up a free kick

I feel we do, if we are going to make the next step up... someone who the strikers and midfielders, defenders (from corners) can bank/gamble on getting the ball into dangerous areas, rather than various people taking the kick and it seemingly coming to nothing (hitting the wall/1st man) most of the time....which is soooo frustrating time after time !!

We have got one with Jamie Hanson. We don't need a dead ball specialist. We need to improve on what we have got. At the end of the day who would this person play instead of? We won't see us as poor as last season from set pieces.

Taking what u say, Hanson doesn't as yet figure in the 1st team (who will he replace?) and im sure, hope, your right about not being as poor, but surely thats just hope... as what would suggest the same players will do significantly better? They must have worked on it last season.....

I don't understand why players like Martin, Johnny or Bryson don't just tell Ward, 'Look mate, you're sh*te at free kicks, let one of us take them.'

To be fair we have seen Bryson and Russell etc take them, and they arnt significantly better, which is why Mac doesn't give them the job.... He obviously thinks that atm Ward is the best of the bunch, hence my post !

They aren't amazing but they're sooo much better than Ward, at least they can beat the wall

There are very, very few players in world football who's crossing and set pieces are consistently anything higher than 'above average'.

Even the people you associate as being 'set piece experts' are more miss than hit from what I've seen, although perhaps statistics disagree.

Someone like Beckham wasn't really the best all-round footballer but his crossing and free kicks were good enough to carry his whole reputation.

Who's the best set piece taker in football at the moment? I bet if you had a compilation of every cross and set piece they'd done in the last few years the majority of them would be considered quite poor.
