NIGEL Clough has not ruled out a move for the vastly experienced Richard Dunne – but expects the defender to find himself a Premier League club.

Dunne is currently a free agent after being released by Aston Villa.

Richard Dunne would interest Derby County, says Nigel Clough.

The 33-year-old former Everton and Manchester City centre-back did not feature at all for Villa last season due to a groin injury, though he did return to action for the Republic of Ireland at the beginning of this month, where he played alongside Derby’s player of the year Richard Keogh in a 4-0 friendly win over Georgia in Dublin.

Dunne has been linked with a string of clubs, including Queens Park Rangers and Celtic, but Clough thinks he will remain in the English top

“We know he’s been released by Aston Villa and we’ve heard he wants to stay in the Premier League,” said the Rams boss.

“He’s that kind of ‘Jake Buxton’ centre-half we like.

“If the possibility became available down the line, we would look at it.

“But I think he will be looking to stay in the league above for now.”

Clough is in the market for a central defender and is also considering the option of bringing someone in on an extended loan deal, with Mark O’Brien and Shaun Barker scheduled to return from respective knee injuries at some point during the

2013-14 campaign.

“Mark O’Brien has encouraged us and is ahead of schedule in his return to fitness,” said the manager.

“Having said that, we don’t want to put too much pressure on him to rush back, so even if we got in a good quality loan until January or something like that, just to give us a bit of cover, that would be great.

“It could be a young player from the league above but we’ve also talked about a couple of players from our division. We’re still relaxed about the situation.”

Sounds to me as though it's one of those rumours that continue to gain momentum - until he signs for somebody else and reveals that his only contact with our fair city was when he stopped off in Derby a fortnight ago to fill up with petrol

On the other hand, Daveo has put a hashtag on his ITK.
