Paul Ince ends 22-month exile to take over as manager at Blackpool, where he will team up with son Thomas

Paul Ince is to end an exile of nearly two years from the front line by being named Blackpool’s new manager.

By John Percy

Ince has been in advanced talks with the Championship club over the past 48 hours and is expected to be unveiled on Friday as part of football’s latest father-and-son double act.

Thomas Ince, the England Under-21 international winger, is a key player for Blackpool.

Ince Snr met Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston on Tuesday and is understood to have impressed with his knowledge of the club’s strengths and weaknesses. He has attended most of Blackpool’s games this season to watch his son play.

Oyston believes Ince can help bring the best out in Thomas, Blackpool’s prized asset, who was the subject of failed bids from Liverpool and Reading last month, as well as help guide the club towards the play-offs.

The 45-year-old has been out of work since leaving Notts County in April 2011 and has been keen to return to the dugout.

Blackpool, who lost previous manager Michael Appleton to Blackburn Rovers, considered Sean O’Driscoll and Mark Robins in recent weeks before they took posts at Bristol City and Huddersfield respectively. Billy Davies was also interviewed by Oyston and seemed poised to take over before a late move from Nottingham Forest wrecked the deal.

Ince is expected to have a rolling contract and will retain Steve Thompson, the long-serving No 2 who had been in charge on a caretaker basis.

The former England international’s first match will be against Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Saturday. His previous management roles have been with Macclesfield, MK Dons and Blackburn.

He was ok at Notts, he strained that relationship by not moving closer to the club. Did well at MK Dons (first time round) and Macclesfield, if memory serves.

Blackburn went horribly wrong but he'll do ok, they're falling from the pack in general anyway so it wouldn't be any great surprise to see them not make the play-offs given their lack of finances and players such as M.Phillips and others no doubt looking towards their next move.

Still, it's an ok move, whoever went there wasn't going to get any cash, atleast Ince is used to that. Can't see him being a huge success but he'll do for them, for now atleast. When his son inevitably moves on and he's not doing much they'll replace him before long, no doubt.

can't stand him - remember the story of when he signed for Man Utd and being introduced to the squad (of seasoned internationals) - told them that they should call him "the Guvnor" (much to Fergie's annoyance) - pretty much summed him up - arrogant git...

Operative word highlighted.

Ha ha ha, you read the Daily Express. Street cred out the window quicker than Tyrone Mears.

(yes, I did have to Google it)

He does a good job at MK Dons and is given the Blackburn job.

He does an awful job there and is rightly sacked.

He goes back to MK Dons and is awful and resigns before the sack.

He then drops down to Notts County losing a record number of consecutive games then is rightly sacked.

So why the hell is he then given a management promotion (you would have to consider managing a Championship club a step up)?

It wouldn't happen to have anything to do with his colour would it because it surely can't have anything to do with his management record which stinks.

The only thing he has proven during his time in management is that he can waste a whole load of cash on utter rubbish.

An absolutely ridiculous appointment.

Football management seems to be the only career whereby your management stock can go up the worse job you do. Gordon Strachen springs to mind.

What a shame for Blackpool. Holloway really put that club on the map and all of his good work will soon go down the toilet.

The only possible reason is that he's black?

What a truly idiotic post.

There have been so many examples of this..

How the hell did Pardew get the Newcastle job.. Paul Jewell likewise at Ipswich.. Sven Goran Erikson is the worst.. How does that guy keep getting jobs after all his failures?

But in football I'm sure it's a case of who you are rather than what you do.. I'm pretty sure many managers out there felt aggrieved with NC making the jump from non league to the NPC..

An interesting decline in fortunes has to be Paul Simpson.. The guy won a double promotion with Carlisle, moved to Preston, in December they were top of the league, and then they missed out on the playoffs on GD, Simpson was sacked the following season, then sacked at Shrewsbury after taking them to the playoff final but losing and being poor the following season, then sacked at Stockport and finally left after a month in charge of Northwich Victoria.. Now that's a decline..

Anyone else remember Mike Newell? Took Luton to 9th in the NPC, apparently rejected the chance to manage Leicester and ended up being sacked by Grimsby and now being all washed up.

Cough did a terrible job at Brighton and undid Revie's work at Leeds.

How did he ever get another job?

Off the back of 1 decent job before I imagine?

I guess alot of owners think 'well if they've done it once I'm sure they can repeat it again'

I still can't see the logic in appointing Paul Ince as manager when he's failed multiple times..

not read the express for many years.....(didn't have to google it - remember it being recounted by on of the man utd players after ince moved abroad - it's also generally believed that Fergie shifted him out of united because of his attitude)

I read the Express today.

I want those 17 seconds of my life back.
