RodleyRam
Interesting article. Good to be reminded of what things were like (never been more depressed than the last months of Jewell's tenure!!) and how far we have actually come in all areas, this development hasn't always been rewarded with results on the pitch but that will definitely come in the next 12 - 18 months. There's been so many positives but for me the best thing is the character and attitude of the whole club. Pretty much everyone is hungry and wants to learn, develop further and move forward. I'm much happier that we're building the club back from the academy upwards and I think we can only reap the benefits of this in the long term. Much rather this than constant change and quick fixes! Patience is a virtue
networker1884
Its been quite difficult at times, but looking back to where we were 4 years ago to where we are now always put a smile on my face.

RamNut
Progress yes but a bit slow. Remember how quickly jim smith and Arthur Cox turned things around? Neither spent fortune - especially arthur. Three seasons after he took over we had achieved two promotions and were in the top division. And how much did he spend?......... Steele nil Wallington 20k M Taylor 5k Palmer nil sage 60k Forsyth 25k Linnegan 20 k Hindmarch nil Streete nil McLaren 60k K Taylor 20 k micklewhite 80k Gee 5k Penney 5k Christie 140k Lillis 200k Gregory 100k Chandler 20k Callaghan 140k Mcclaren 50k richardson 5k Livingstone nil Biggins 25k Plus youth team products Harbey Blades Garner ............................Not alot. needles
Arthur had a clean slate to start from after we hit rock bottom after the relegation to div 3. Jim Smith had the core of a good squad and a few quid to spend. Nigel has had to clear the decks of forest type high earning journeymen. From now, given a modicum of backing, he'll emulate Jim and Arthur. I hope.

How much would those players cost at today's prices though,RamNut? Seem to remember Arthur spent a lot the next time round (no criticism of a great manager though)
AndyB
Arthur and Jimmy did great jobs but I agree I think Clough's job has been harder and with stricter financial controls.
Brammie Steve
Nice one Nigel, Nice one son! Nigel isn't his dad, no one is! Nigel has had a different set of problems to deal with. The green shoots of recovery which were apparent when we were promoted to the prem developped as Japanese knotweed. Nigel had the job of dealing with the infestation, Clearing and sterilising the area: And rebuilding totally from the ground upwards. He has done a hard job well And his dad would have just cause to be proud of him. Like Brian, Nigel has at times puzzled the board, And the fans. yet he has shown himself to be a good judge of character, Knowing that an open cheque book does not guarantee results. He has kept his nerve, faced his critics, And stuck to his aims and objectives, Building a team which has no stars, But is what it intends to remain. a coherent unit, playing together, To steadily improve, and grow together. Not losing players as soon as they Score a few goals Demonstrate potential And attract interest from othe clubs with fatter bank balances And large subs benches! (I still prefer poems which rhyme and scan, but if you can't beat 'em.........!)

That's £980k in total right? You know that in today's money that somewhere in the region of £2.5 to £3.5 mil due to inflation right? Add into that the general inflation of prices in football and suddenly it doesn't seem so small, especially when Clough hasn't had a nice £3.5 mil to spend without needing to reduce the wage bill or sell players. maydrakin
They were purchased over a number of seasons. A lot of our promotion push from Div 3 was funded by the sale of Kevin Wilson. Mark Lillis didn't arrive until we'd won promotion to Div 1. We also sold Bobby Davison for £350k not long after that, so it is worth noting it wasn't just those amounts in isolation.
