Fantastic news that Will Hughes has a new deal until 2015. He will develop to become a massive player for us and a future England squad player I'm sure

Midfielder Will Hughes has committed his future to Derby County after signing a new contract with the Club.

17-year-old Hughes, who is a graduate of Derby’s Academy and signed professional terms earlier this year, is now tied to the Rams until the summer of 2015.

Having made his first-team debut last November, Hughes made a handful of outings towards the back-end of last season – and the England youth international has stepped up to become a regular face in Nigel Clough’s starting XI this time around.

Hughes has made 11 appearances so far this season, and he scored his first-ever professional goal in Derby’s 5-1 home win over Watford at the beginning of September.

Clough has expressed his delight at Hughes’s rise to the first-team squad and has encouraged the youngster to continue to work hard, in order to improve his game.He said: “We want to keep our best young players at the Club and Will certainly falls into that category.

“We have to remember that he has made only 10 starts this season and his career is in its infancy, but he has shown great potential and it is important he continues to work hard and build on it.

“This news sends out a great message throughout the Club and once again it highlights the pathway we have from the Academy through to the first-team squad, and also the faith we have in young talent here within our system.”

Hughes admits making the step-up from the Academy to being a first-team regular is a dream come true.

He joined Derby’s Academy in 2006 at the age of 11 and he has revealed his excitement at extending his time at Pride Park.

He said: “I am loving every minute in the first-team and it has been an amazing last few months.

“First and foremost, I love playing football and I’ve been given a great opportunity here by the manager and his staff.

“I know there’s a lot of hard work ahead of me, but I’m fully committed to getting my head down, working hard and continuing to improve my game.

“It may be a little bit of a cliché, but it really is a dream come true for me and I’m grateful for being given this chance.”

Academy Manager Darren Wassall, who is just one of the Academy coaches to have overseen Hughes’s development in recent years, is delighted that he has followed in the footsteps of recent Academy graduates

Mark O’Brien and Jeff Hendrick in securing their long-term future with Derby.

He said: “Seeing Will commit his future to the Club is terrific news for everyone, and from the Academy’s point of view it certainly should serve as a piece of inspiration to the players within the set-up.

“Our aim in the Academy is to produce players fit for the first-team here at Derby County and everyone takes great pride in seeing Will running out at Pride Park on a Saturday afternoon.”

The news comes as a double boost for Hughes, who passed his driving test yesterday morning.

Good news, amazing how our fans now think of the pounds first rather than having the pleasure if watching him play for a few more years.

Quite.

Though, in a world where fans would rather their team finish 16th or 17th in the premier league than try and win trophies, it is hardly surprising that fans should start thinking about how much he can be sold for.

His worst performance for us today.

Ok I'll stop ignoring you!

Not sure what you saw today. I thought he was busy, saw a lot of the ball, kept possession well except for maybe 3 poor passes. He battled, showed strength for such a slender lad and controlled the game second half.

IMO he looked better than Dunn and Pedersen. A lot of his work was in the "Barca/Spain" type style of playing easy 5 - 10 yard balls, having it back, giving the defenders an option to discourage the hoof.

A fair bit of his play will seem to be getting us nowhere but eventually we got on top and finished strongly as we wore them down.

Not a fantastic performance by any means but a very solid effort by a 17 year old against highly experienced premiership and international players.

I don't think we have the team or players around him to make him fit into our team. The only way he will be effective will e to have him up the pitch further.

I don't want to sound like a damp squid but played 11 games, one goal, I cannot think of any assists. That would suggest to me we are carrying him. (bit like Hendrick at the moment).

We are such a poorly balanced side when we start with him on the left and no Roberts. He cannot get on the ball and have any effect. When he does get the ball, so often as a team we hae all four midfielders across the middle and we don't get enough from our strikers. We don't play through balls, nor do we have strikers making those runs.

We are a team of square pegs in round holes and Clough is trying to force things.

I would be looking to go 4-3-1-2 giving Hughes a free run to effect things, or get him in the middle from the get go, play Jacobs who deserves a start, and hope that our on the ball quality will overcome a lack of physical presence in the middle.

The only way for Clough to go (without new cash investment) is the slow burn. We are now sticking to the style of play that Clough (and Metgod) want us to play.

You could stick Bryson and Hughes into Barca's team and they would be able to do a job. Move and pass, don't wait until you are closed down, release the ball early and drop into space to receive it....

ok, ok, i'm not suggesting they could seriously play for Barcelona but the simplicity of what they do is being missed by one or two of us.

For the first time in several years we are finishing games stronger than the other team and looking for late goals. Its down to better retention and letting the other team chase us instead. When you are constantly on or looking for the ball you don't feel tired.

Its coming chaps, slowly but surely our team is growing and improving.

Well said sir.

Unfortunately I think people are running out of patience with junior and feel that this year is his year.
