There is a ball sensor that apparently is accurate to a millisecond. It was also the one that "proved" Ronaldo didn't make contact for "his" goal. For off sides the software interpolates between frames 1/25 second apart to tell "exactly" who was off side when the ball was kicked.

Not everyone believes in technology. My Dad was initially sceptical of computers and so stubborn that the more useful they became the more he maintained that they could do nothing that couldn’t be done by a moderately intelligent human bean

i did a smart motorway speed awareness course in Mansfield recently which was completely hijacked by a very vocal majority who were intent on explaining to the course leader that - based on their personal experience - it was undeniable that smart motorways are detrimental to traffic flow

How does the tech decide exactly when the ball has left the players boot, if we are talking centimetres?

So they apparently freeze the frame at that moment. I’d assume they have a whizzy piece of software that takes the different angles and decides when the ball leaves the foot. Forget centimetres, it will be milliseconds. Tough competition for the lino who has the sun in his eyes, macular degeneration,  a player between him and the ball and who hasn’t managed to keep up with play.

    Dear Mr Souness...

VAR has to prove it went out (Fully over the line).  IF IT CANNOT PROVE THAT, they cannot change the ref's decision, which was that the ball was in.

They may well not be able to prove that, due to angles and/or boots/ankles in the way.  They may not have the pictures you are demanding.
VAR does not have to prove the ball was in... the ref already made that decision.

What happened ? Didn’t the ref rule the goal out, then  to be overturned by VAR?  I think that was it.

but I suspect VAR got it right and all the pundits simply don’t know how far the ball needs to be over the line for it not to be overhanging the line

You get $10k per day a player is involved ( in squad) plus 14 days pre tournament..so if Poland knocked out on Sunday that will equate to $280k

Hmmm interesting. And do you know what the deal would most likely be between Derby and Brum round all of that

Or maybe Gary Neville could become a manager...oh wait...

Yeah it’s a funny one. Very different job I guess. As I typed my post I did wonder whether he’d try it again but frankly I think he’s not that foolish. Funny I used to detest him as a player but his punditry is just so incisive. (“In the kingdom of the blind...” some would say?)

On one of the preview shows he was accused by Carragher (the dolt) and TV’s Jack the lad Rednapp of lazy analysis of defenders. Neville’s response was hilarious, he said something like, ‘what are you on about, I spend most of my waking hours thinking about defenders, I’m obsessed by it. That’s my problem ...’. Maybe some indication there why he might not be the ideal manager ?

Which people should [he] be listening to?

No one in particular. Seems there is a clamour from the fans, fed by comments from pundits and journalists, which Southgate’s team can’t help being aware of. So he’s being prepped for interviewers asking him questions like “people are wondering why Foden isn’t starting, what are your plans for him in this tournament?”  I think he may be influenced when there is an opinion that is so widely held - and of course he’s aware of it.  Could be a bad career move if he ignores it and things go wrong. And I don’t think he’s stubborn, it’s more that he’s a bit limited as a tactician

(... or he could cut out the middle men and just listen to Gary Neville who seems to be in a league of his own. )

Rashford proving us all wrong again ?

His missed effort in the first half was a decent effort at a crafty dink. Keeper was lucky and just happened to guess right. Along the ground was in. The free kick should have been saved. The second goal was a messy business - a world class striker would have been much tidier.

He gave the ball away far too often in the first half. Motm is a bit of a joke given what others did

We can say what we want about Southgate but another tournament group stage navigated with ease. Three on the bounce. Obviously there are tougher tests ahead but another tournament with no surprises suits me fine. A fair few 'favourites' have had it much rougher against worse opposition.

The criticism of Southgate reflects a view that he has failed to win two major tournaments which could have been won, because he was too cautious. (And couldn’t organise a penalty shootout.) He seems to listen to what people are saying. And he seems smart enough to learn from his mistakes. So maybe he’ll do better this time ?
Tonight was promising albeit against mediocre oppo

  9. We’ve got some hopeless pundits but imho Neville and Ferdinand talk masses of sense. Have heard both of them saying in different ways that Alexander Arnold (as well as Bellingham and Foden) is a ‘player in a generation’  but that if we come up against Mbappe then Walker will contain him and no one else can.  Will be interesting to see what happens if we come up against France

    Dear me.

This video shows there should be 2 hmg health warnings

    - no more than 21 units a week (addiction, liver damage, cancer etc)

    - no more than 21 units in an hour (because you might not realise that the drunk fat lout facing you with raised clenched fist intends to punch you just as soon as he can get your massive bald sunburnt head in focus)

Wait until the next WC, 48 Nations, Countries, Separatist states in that one, USA, Canada and Mexico are the hosts, Heven help FIFA if those teams get to play with other teams they were at War with in history.

If Scotland qualify England should definitely refuse to play.
