Zak Gilsenan is a great player so not surprised to see he's scored 2 for them. Former Barcelona (he was very young) and Liverpool academy player.

Yes. Too many people wanting to watch Derby and Blackburn U21s instead of Everton and Palace.

2-1 FT. 5th, but level with Wolves on 21 points. Only Man Utd, Man City and Liverpool
Mintus came on for Richards at half time. Augustien and Green on for Hawkins and Osong around the 80 min mark.

xG needs a rebrand. It doesn't mean "how many you should have scored" - it's a metric of how many shots were close to goal.
If you see a team with loads of shots and low xG, you can tell that it was a side struggling to break into the final third and taking fanciful shots at goal.
If you see a high xG and no goals scored, you know a team's been wasteful.
I don't see what's hipster or controversial about that.

I could speak for ages on this and the importance of looking at underlying stats etc.
But as a basic view, xG in terms of individual games is good surface level but over the course of a season, gives a much better picture.

At what point is the league a fair indicator? Do we have to wait until the last game has been played?
10 games in, Port Vale were 6th bit now they're 4th bottom. After 20 games, Reading were bottom 4, but would now be 14th without a points deduction. Leyton Orient have shot up from 16th to 9th in the same period of time.

DRobinson and DBrown are closest to the first team and should have had more minutes this season to help them transition from youth football to men's.
JThompson is my man of the match most weeks now. He's an excellent shot stopper and calm when playing out from the back.
I really like Cox who is perfectly suited to Warne's LCB role. Versitile enough to play LB or LWB too. Eventually I'd like to see him at LCB with Cashin moved central.
Gill was a regular at LB for the U18s last season despite being an U16 player. He's now being introdcued to U21 football.
Hawkins is another who was fast tracked. 17 U18 games when still an U16 player, then 16 games at U21 when a first year scholar. Earlier in the season I stated he needed to start adding end product to his game, which he has started to do over the past coiple of months. He's a simialr type of player to Bird, is currently a DM but could be moved further forward eventually, just like Warne's done with Bird.
Allen is a special player. He was introduced to the U18s late last season and scored 2 goals in 4 apps. Since the summer he has really kicked on. He's scored 3 goals in 343 mins for Wales U17 and 7 goal contributions in 719 minuts for our U18s. He's recently stepped up to the U21s too (scoring on his only start) He's also an excellent freekick taker. Mainly an AM but can play anywhere in midfield or on the wings. He's still only 16.

    Rubbish.

Shots on target/shots assume each shot is just as likely to go in which leads to people assuming ‘more shots = better performance’. xG rightfully builds on that over simplified view and looks at the quality of chances rather than just quantity of chances. I can’t see how anyone can say it’s not a useful metric.

Surely moved past smarmy pundits giving it the ‘the only stat that matters is the goals scored stat’ large.

It was clear from xG that despite derby not having the results we’d like under Rosenior we were creating quality chances that we simply weren’t taking. (The eye sight test would tell you that Collins had a howler of a start to last season but xG took the emotion out of those claims that we were a boring team that didn’t attack. We did. We attacked very well. We just couldn’t hit a barn door).
Whereas Rotherham were massively over performing against their xG at the start of last season and eventually started falling like a stone with only the over performance at the start of the season keeping them up ultimately. They regressed back to where their underlying stats said they should have been.

Think I’ve said it before but if it was called something like “chance quality” instead of expected goals then you’d have a lot less people poo-pooing it for whatever reason they do.
It’s not the be all and end all but can add context if you want it to. Does make me laugh when people will say it’s meaningless and then happily sit there quoting shots or shots on target.

I quite like XG and as @Ghost of Clough says, if you understand it, it can tell you quite a bit about how a team is performing in terms of creating chances and how they (and individuals within the team) are performing in terms of taking them.
And........it keeps me reasonably balanced re Warne and the in/out and awful/brilliant debates.
My position re Warne is that I think the football is pretty grim to watch but he definitely knows what he is doing.
Our XG for is 1.46 per game and we're scoring 1.74 per game.........outperforming it with only one striker available
Our XG against is 1.07 per game and we're conceding 0.94 per game........again goalies and defenders must be doing a lot right
    If you then take Peterborough....
Their XG for is 1.83.......clearly demonstrating they are playing more attacking football over the season so far.....and they are scoring 1.9....just outperforming XG
Their XG against is 1.16 but they are conceding 1.26
What does that add up to?
I'd currently rather be Derby than Peterborough in terms of league position (+ stadium, toilets, kit, chairman etc etc) but, if were a neutral, wanting to be entertained, I'd go to Peterborough without a shadow of doubt.
And you a kick-the-ball-into-a-skip halftime competition thrown in.
I think XG is more of an entertainment factor on any given match day but becomes more meaningful over time.

xG is a useful tool if used correctly. Give Chris Martin and Connor Sammon exactly the same chance and they'll have the same xG, but one of them will be more liekly to score as he's a better finisher. Unsurprisingly, the teams who create a high proportion of chances for their best finishers also outperform their xG as a team, whilst the team creating chances for poorer finishers underperform.
xG is a better metric than shots as it gives meaning to the shot - the chance of scoring from 1 yard out will be significantly greater than 40 yards out.

Rowett's style of play still varied. A bit of magic from Lawrence or Vydra. Nugent and Winnall pressing from the front, and Jerome to give us a target man for Forsyth to aim his crosses at. Weimann and Russell (until Jan) mixed it up on the wings.
Warne gives us "pass to Hourihane who will pass it out to the right to get Mendez-Laing on the ball. Mendez-Laing will cross to Collins". It's all too predictable which contributes to it being boring to watch.

This is really desperate stuff. The right's version of Carol Vorderman could be, say Teresa May? Penny Mourdant? I'm struggling to think of many other reasonablish centre right women to be honest.
Maybe we could even say Liz Truss, who probably beleives in opposite things to Vorderman in terms of taxation and economics?
The left's version of KT Hopkins? I don't really think there is one. Perhaps there is some vile human who celebrates when a trans woman attacks another woman. Or who tries to incite illegal immigrants to murder the existing population?
I love the plea against polarisation later though that I don't even think is ironic.

I genuinely believe the only reason we are anywhere this year is because the division is the worst it's been in years. The likes of Ipswich, Plymouth and Wednesday last year were levels above any team in league one this year. I think this crappy division masks just how poor we are. We're rubbish, I don't care if we're sat in second. The eye test is a complete giveaway.

Some good points. But I'm afraid I don't really care about the branding - I still call it Twitter.
Yes you're right verification is a mess. I'd say it always has been, and it's hard to instigate a fair "verification by degree of fame" system, but part of the reason for the current system is obviously financial. Same as ads.
I've no problem with "pay to be seen". If you want a free service, why are they obligated to make it as good as a paid service? As I said, I haven't seen a difference, and the fee is very, very small.
I remember original Twitter always trying to muck around with and curate my feed. Hated it - always avoided it then. Similarly I ignore "for you" now.
I'd say KT Hopkins is the right's version of Carol Vorderman. They should indeed both be allowed on the platform. No one is forced to follow them.
Current ads and subscription fees are partly down to online campaigns from various Bamfords trying to stop corporations advertising on Twitter. Because they hate Musk, despite all the amazing good he's done for the world. And those craven corporations cowtow and stop. Twitter needs money from somewhere to keep itself running. Blame the people who shut down its income stream, despite being a massively popular site. Surely by now we're all immune to ads to an extent? I don't really see them.
Finally, something that really heartens me about Twitter, despite our deeply polarized world, is that whenever I look at what's trending (generally, not for me) it's almost always football. Meaning it's clearly where most people still discuss the beautiful game. And that gives me some hope for the future.

A competitive league one outfit second in the league. Some performances this season with ultra aggressive pressing and free flowing football when allowed to.
The standard of the league is pretty poor and the matches can be difficult to watch. It’s a league problem. We need to get out of this league.

The point I was making in the post you refer to is not once have I seen this Warne team persistently play aimless long ball and the ball being in the air more than on the ground. To say so is just untrue and a lazy stereotype based on Warne’s perceived style at Rotherham. Recent games I’ve seen centre halves split and Vickers playing the ball out to the side of the box then into midfield. That’s not lumping it.
