Even if it turns out to be statistically correct, his success has so far been limited to one club, this is his first opportunity to spread his wings and prove he can do it at a bigger club.

Nobody (well, hardly anybody!) is saying can't or wont be a success here, or not advocating giving him time to do his thing but Christ Almighty.

Arise the  unimpeachable king of League One management! (Arguably)

    Nope.

    Just stating a fact.

Paul Warne’s track record points to apparent limitations. He appears to have the know how as to how get out of the division, but not how to stop going back. I would say any successful league one manager would be someone who takes the team up, and then consolidates, or keeps the team pushing on.  I can think of a great many successful managers in recent years who have achieved the

Are they Paul Warne's limitations though, or a reflection of the limitations of Rotherham as a club?

I'd argue that Rotherham stuck with him through 3 relegations because they knew their own limitations, and that he probably never stood a chance of staying up. Most clubs would have let a manager go after a relegation. Why do you think that hey didn't, not once, twice, or even three times?

And humour me please, how many of the many successful managers that you refer to pushed on to greater things with the something akin to Rotherham's limited budget?

Of course, way too early. The end of this season will be too early.

But the seeds of opinions are not based solely on the three Derby County games he's managed. People are also aware of his ideas and style of play from his time at Rotherham.

I love the fact that we there are now so experts on what has happened at Rotherham over the past few years.

Let's be honest. If we hadn't appointed PW, then we'd have mostly been pretty ignorant of how he had gone about achieving what he has achieved in League One. 3 promotions in 6 years. That's remarkable!

I bet before Derby came in for PW, you'd have struggled to find many Rotherham fans that would have had a bad word to say about him. Of course if you ask them now, they'll be glad to point out his limitations. That's fickle football fans for you. Derby fans are exactly the same.

DC has appointed arguably the most successful Leage One manager for decades, if not of all time.

So let's not pretend we are experts in the way PW wants to play. He wants to be successful, and has his own ideas as to how to achieve that.

Let's give him ample opportunity to show us what he can do.

I'd be very surprised that if he thinks the style of football needs changing, he'll change it. His record shows he knows exactly what he's doing.

Can't we just let him do it?

Whilst it was a good finish and we deserved it, that goal was a peak league one goal ?

A clearance into a centre back just completely missing the ball

But isn't that what we've been lacking for so long, the kind of goals that the opposition have been scoring against us for fun?

  5. Anybody who is there (who can take their eyes off the game), or anybody watching on telly, able to give a steer on how our midfield three are lining up today?

Is Bird holding and the other two roaming, or something different.

I'm stuck at home in dreary Yorkshire, no RD commentary or live feed. Just relying on this thread for updates.

Used to get crushed during this one in Ossie end

We are the Rams oh yes we are the Rams la la la la lala

la la la la la la

we are the Rams oh yes we are the Rams

    And in the Columbo terrace.

When it was full, and people still trying to get in from the back, one person would shout 'We are the rams", then everyone would join in, jumping up and down whilst being shoved forward just enough to let those in at the back. Everyone would then shuffle back, but not quite to where they started. Then some other person would shout "We are the rams" and it would all start again.

After a few rounds, you'd be at the front of the terrace, and it would be absolutely packed behind.

Madness how they allowed that to continue for so many years. I'm amazed nobody ever got seriously hurt.

it is an excellent appointment no doubt.

I do question the timing and the nature of Rosenior departure though. okay things weren't great but he was getting decent results & for me you cannot sack a manager after a win.

what would the players think of it? i think you are playing with fire, a risky move from mr. clowes, let's hope it pays off

    Or on the contrary.

Making the change now gives PW time to get all of the players on side well before the next transfer window. I fear that without making the change, three of the youngsters that I still feel we should be building a team around for the long term, Bird, Knight and Sibley, would have been looking to move. PW might get the best out of them.

If this change happened nearer the transfer window, PW might not have had time to implement his plans and win players over.

I'm looking forward to playing a more aggressive attacking style of play than we have seen for the past 3 years.

I'm not gonna lie... VERY stupid decision. You don't let a manager go after this amount of games, building a team spirit and relationship with a team that's been together 7-8 weeks.. we're 7th in the league.. just finding our feet and now you want someone else to come in who will have a new philosophy?

Unless it's a decision by LR rather than us, very stupid decision. Some of our players are here because of their bond with LR and without him, I think the likes of Knight etc will be gone in January. Just my opinion obviously, but far too soon for decisions like this. Look after those that stood by when the ship was sinking when they could of left, but didn't For the love of the club and us as fans.

    ?????

I'd like to think that of those (few) players that stayed, their bond with the club and fans meant more than any bond with LR.

If LR continued to play Kinght at RB, Bird alongside another DM, and leave Sibley out of the team altogether, I think all 3 might have been heading for the exit in January.

Hopefully a new manager will get the best out of these 3 players, in their best positions, as they should be the future of the club, not necessarily Smith, Collins and Hourihane just because they were brought in by LR.

The new manager shouldn't have any such issues. He can simply play any player on their merit.

  9. Like many others, I was excited by this signing. I remember seeing him play a few times, and he always looked a very capable player. He may still be, but it just doesn't appear to be working at the moment, especially with him playing alongside Bird. Indeed, this could be one of the reasons why Max looks a different player this year. He was nailed on for the DM slot this season after last year, and in my view, rightly made captain. Hourihane then comes in. Liam clearly rates him and wants him in the team, and Max probably feels that he is no longer top man. It has probably had a big destabilizing effect on Max, which could be the reason behind his poor form. Play Max alongside Knight, and I think you would see a completely different Max Bird.

Unfortunately, for reasons that we all know about and have discussed at length, we appeared only able to recruit 2 types of player this summer, experienced pro's, inevitably coming towards the end of their careers, or young players released by other clubs for various reasons.

With hindsight, and knowing that we were looking to build a whole new squad - one for the future, and knowing that League One was always going to be a tough division to play in, hard, physical and fast, we should have gone more down the route of trying to attract players more suited to the league.

I wonder if we should have been 'fishing in a different pool' - i.e. looking for young hungry players currently playing in League One, or possibly League Two, with ambition and potential, or just a point to prove. I know we were/are under strict EFL restrictions, and we started recruiting later than most other clubs, but DCFC is surely still a massive draw for young hungry ambitious players wanting to make a step up the football ladder.

Even if Hourihane (and indeed Collins) come good, it won't be long before we would need to replace / upgrade anyway.

I fear that we bought into the 'must get promoted this season at all cost' transfer strategy, which is in danger of backfiring, when we really should have accepted a season of stability with a transfer policy of buying players for future, followed by a push next season with a team that has gelled, and has the 'legs' for a promotion push.

Obviously we need to adopt a system of playing as well that not only suits the players at our disposal, but also reflects the division we are in and the type of football needed to get promoted.

I hope that I am wrong, that things turn round soon, and we do start to get back into contention this season, but I fear this season will be a wasted opportunity, and we will have to start a new two year plan to get out of this division next summer, possibly with a new manager.

Except when they play Derby. Our defeat to them at home about 2017 time (think it was 3-1?) broke a streak of something like 60 of their FA Cup games that were on TV in a row.

Any team with any kind of record must either hate or love playing us.

If they haven't won for ages, you just know that we'll give them a good chance to get that elusive win.

Or in the case of Man Utd in the FA Cup, you knew that drawing Derby would inevitably be just about the first time ever Man Utd weren't on TV.

They say things like this tend to even themselves out over time, yet we just always seem to be that club.
