  1. Had GGG winning that fight relatively comfortably, even more so than #1. Are they hoping for a 3rd fight and feared it would never happen if Golovkin had won? If GGG does go for 'round 3' then let's hope it's not in Vegas as he'd have to KO Canelo to win there.

  2. Can't wait for this fight. I can't say with any degree of certainty whether Canelo cheated or not but I did think that GGG edged the first fight in any case. I'll be backing him to secure a narrow win on points.

  3. Khan dodged a bullet tonight. Tagged twice, both times literally as the bell rang, his legs gone on both occasions. He was a lucky boy. Vargas' nose was broken early on but he was the one coming forward all night. Khan clearly had the edge in terms of the speed and accuracy of his work but there are a fair number of fighters in and around the division who would absolutely bury Khan, Kell Brook being one of them. Vargas was brave but he's already been exposed against the top guys and is a pretty one-dimensional fighter. Hope the Khan - Brook fight happens, but I've been waiting for that occurrence for years now so I won't be holding my breath.

Nuff said.

  5. Quick bump on this.  I've 3 recommendations to offer...

'Hotel Salvation' - An Indian film that is subtitled and probably way to languorous for most peoples' tastes but I absolutely loved it. No Bollywood silliness in sight. A whimsical and beautiful meditation on life and death without being in any way 'heavy'. A wonderful and remarkable film should you wish to see it.

    9/10 Asa Asanovic

For the sake of balance.... 'Fury' - a bleak, brutal and visceral account of tank battalion deep behind enemy lines towards of the second of world war II. Directed by David Ayer, it's not an easy watch by any stretch but it is as an honest and uncompromising depiction of the horrors of conventional warfare without lapsing into morality tales.

    7.5/10 Craig Bryson

Lastly, just watched 'The Green Mile' again. I've mostly stopped watching telly as, let's be honest, 90% of everything served up is utter dirge, but this tale of prison guards working death row in a US prison set in the 1930's is a thoroughly compelling movie, if something of an emotional rollercoaster. Suffice to say it gets me every time. If you've not seen it, please do. It's a wonderful story and not one you'll forget in a hurry.

    9.5/10 Charlie George

I hope you aren't hanging around street corners on the cowley road!! I have done a bit of drinking in the Headington area as well as tourist and student dodging in the city centre.

My mate lives on Observatory so The Lamb and Flag and Eagle and Child are occasional haunts too.

    I try not to ?

All decent boozers. Like you, me and mine avoid the city centre, George Street specifically. The new Westgate Centre has apparently got some good eateries and is worlds apart from the previous iteration by all accounts so no doubt I'll man up and head there at some point!

Are you a Jericho regular then?

More of a Cowley road type tbh but Peppers and the Bookbinders are old haunts. Have friends in Jericho and buds who used to work at Pepoers and Raouls. Some nice places to eat and drink and it's pretty civilised there these days given it's former notoriety.

I’ll check it out. I could do with watching something a bit different. Last Korean one I watched was train to Busan. I used to watch loads of foreign language films when I was younger but as I get older I tend to find myself busy and just put stuff on to switch off. Shame really.

Its not a crime film but have you seen The Host? Proper breath of fresh air.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468492/

And not Korean but Asian crime, I always liked the Infernal Affairs trilogy back in the day. Don’t know if you’ve seen that? It’s what The Departed is based on.

Train To Busan I've yet to see. At the time I became aware of it tit seemed like every film made was about zombies but I'll get over myself and give it a whirl if it's good.

The Host I've not seen nor heard anything about so I'll be downloading that inside 5 minutes!

Internal Affairs = classic. I love The Departed too to be fair. Jack Nicholson stealing the show as usual. Typically when Hollywood picks up these movies to re-package them for Western audiences they turn out to be steaming hot garbage. Old Boy being a prime example - really pisses me off. They are re-making A Bittersweet Life too I believe.*

    *shudder

Bit precious aren’t you.. I was genuinely interested in why Korean. French etc, I understand but would have never thought of Korean.  I will leave you to it. Can’t be arsed..

Well you've a odd way of going about asking, haven't you?

Watch the film - what have you got to lose? You might even like it.

I thought everyone liked Oldboy? I really like Sympathy for Mister Vengeance as well.

I love a good foreign language film. I don’t see why anyone would deliberately cut themselves off from entire film industries. Their loss. The only kind of foreign language film I’d avoid watching is the musical Bollywood types.

Foreign language films are a bit of a pain in the arse at night when you’ve got heavy eyelids though.

Well put Mr Stringerbell. I would have explained all this myself but given the response I just couldn't be a4sed.

I have had terrible insomnia since I was a kid so to save the other half dying of sleep deprivation I find myself getting up, sofa-surfing and watching a lot of movies. Been binging on Korean crime movies recently - Old Boy as you say is the one everyone has heard of but there's stacks of good stuff out there. I'll send you a couple of links to other stuff that's cool but not so well known but you probably already know where to find such titles. The one I suggested is definitely worth a look - brutal mind!

Like you, I can't understand why anyone would just write off an entire country's output without knowing the first thing about it. It's like toddlers with their food! These days it's so easy to check out feedback on films amongst other things. I guess some folk prefer the stock-in-trade Hollywood output but franchised entertainment gets tiresome pretty quick. I guess it's symptomatic of how you look at life. Do you stick with what you know or take a risk from time to time in search of new adventures? I'm all about the latter.

Serious question, when does anyone sit down and think, I will give Korean movie a go tonight?

I can only assume drugs and or alcohol were involved. I am sure it's good but that was a big leap of faith going into that. North or South Korean stuff? :o

So you've never seen movies like Old Boy or A Bittersweet Life? IMDB provides an instant frame of reference for those with open minds.

In any case, it's a recommendation is all, no real need for the snarky comments or inferences about my lifestyle. If you want to watch it, do so, if you don't, then don't

  12. Been watching a lot of Korean cinema recently. Some seriously good stuff out there without the OTT Woo type choreography or the geekiness of Chinese or Japanese equivalents.

I Saw The Devil - stunning cinematography and no holds barred - not for the faint-hearted but not overtly gratuitous. Think 'Seven' but flipped upside down and you won't be far off the mark.

    8.5/10 an artful Asanovic

  13. As others have said, Three Billboards is excellent. Check out Martin McDonagh's other stuff, In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths too.

Watched Hell or High Water last night which is a fab film too. Wind River the director's most recent movie (think she wrote both too!) is nearly as good as defo worth a watch.

Sat down to watch The Killing of a Sacred Deer the other night and was back in the pub 30 minutes later. Incomprehensibly awful.

I Saw The Devil (hugely stylish Korean revenge movie) requires a stern constitution but is quite brilliant in every way. My top pick of the recent batch.

    Scores on the doors....

    I Saw The Devil  - 9/10
    Three Billboards 9/10
    Hell or High Water 8.5/10
    Dunkirk 8/10
    Blade Runner 2049 8/10
    The Last Jedi 6/10

The Killing of A Sacred Deer 1/10 :ermm:
