I said it a thousand times, Gayles game has changed from the out and out goal scorer that we knew of him years ago. Now its about his intelligence, movement, linkup play. Just like NML and Didzy when he was here, he's got an opportunity to get a good run of games, no real pressure to perform, and allows him to grow in confidence, aswell as building continuity with the rest of the lads. Hes popped up with a goal after 2 appearances and I said that if he can get an early goal in his time here, i reckon the flood gates will open and I stand by that.

A confident Gayle in this league would walk into any teams starting 11 and I reckon just like NML, we will get the best out of him.

    👌

Thought there were shades on Didzy in his play in the 2nd half. Coming a bit deeper to demand the ball in the inside left channel. He’s a class signing in L1.

1Wildsmith 6.5 Still not happy with his speed of distribution. Not tested.

35Nelson 7 Lovely through ball to Ward for the first goal. Took too long sometimes and clearances charged down/tackles made.

5Bradley 7 still having one wobble a match but solid enough

6Cashin 7.5 marshalled their no.25, who I thought was there most lively player, well.

23Ward 8 very good. Exactly how we should play with WBs. Great energy, intelligent football. Hope he can do it against the better teams.

8Bird 6 Anonymous after the first 15 minutes.

32Adams 7 Started more advanced than Bird. Lovely cross for Gayle’s goal. Harried and battled well.

4Hourihane 6 if Bird and Sibs start I don’t think we’ll miss his set piece deliveries. Sub for me from now until the end of the season.

17Sibley 8 played the role PW wants very well. Finish for his second was exceptional.

11Méndez-Laing 6 could CBT play his ‘free’ role for a couple of weeks?

27Blackett-Taylor 6.5 Would love to see offside call again! Bright and more involved. Needs some starts

25Gayle 7.5 showed his experience with clever runs, touches and interplay. Reminded me a bit of Didzy 2nd half.

    10Waghorn 6 See CH

7Barkhuizen 6.5 Jekyll and  Hyde. Missed a sitter from 7 yards out. Unlucky no one was on his wavelength for the backheel off the touchline. Great work in a similar position to take 2 men out and find Adams for Gayle’s goal.

12Smith 6.5 Saw the game out.

  3. I’ve always thought that Sibs would be better accepting that his place in the team under PW is mostly that of LWB, rather than his coveted AM role. It would give him a good run in the team which to be fair, if he’s on his way in summer brings him to the attention of potential suitors (who may see his goal contributions more favourably). Or he earns a new contract here in Summer. FWIW I think he’ll be gone at the end of the season, whichever division we’re in.

Still don’t particularly like this back three. Bradley is slow and ponderous, Nelson isn’t vastly better either. Means we play at such a laborious pace most of the time.

Today was better because the space that was in the wide areas was occupied by Sibley and Ward who are good enough going forward to use it. That hasn’t been the case for awhile with Elder, Nyambe and (shudder) left back Cashin. You can’t really play a back 3 and then two wing backs who are also bad on the ball.

I thought Nels was fairly sluggish all afternoon. Probably his least effective game for us.

Agreed. PV were all over the place at the back and ripe for tilling over, but we let them off the hook until the excellent work down the right and great finish by Gayle. Then again we didn’t really come out again after half-time. We really could’ve and should’ve had a hat full but a win is a win.

    TURNING!!

Great 3 points against a poor Vale side but we can only beat what they put in front of us. My only real moan is the way we sat back again when 1 nil up 😡

just hope Warne sticks with this line up and formation (injuries allowing) now till the end of the season 👍 Gayle finished well too so all good 😊

We need NML back on form.

Without him we don’t have anyone who can change it up and drive at the opposition.

I was rather hoping CBT would offer that too. I hope he gets a start and that he gets the Derby experience of acclaim from 25,000 fans. This presumably is why he signed.

If we get both of them flying then DG will be busy 😊

I’d start CBT. Show some confidence in the lad. No easy games from now until the end of the season, so might as well stick him in against a team low on confidence. Replace with Barks after half-time if he’s blowin’!

Wildsmith (only by virtue of JV being unavailable)

          Smith Nels Cash Sibs

    Wilson.      Adams         CBT

                        Bird

               NML        Gayle

Subs Loach, Bradley, Ward, Hourihane, Thommo, Barks. Waggy.

Sibs will have to be disciplined in defending. He can do it if he concentrates for 90 minutes!

The players should be able to adapt to a change in formation they will practice it every day in training

Looked completely nonplussed to a man after Nyambe was forced off!

But lo and behold, amidst the tumultuous tempest of the match, Derby’s best centre back found himself out of position, stationed not in the heart of defense where his prowess was most needed, but rather on the flank, a position unfamiliar and ill-suited to his considerable talents. The decision, like a misplaced comma in a sonnet, left spectators scratching their heads in bewilderment.

And as the clock ticked on, the stage was set for a spectacle of managerial antics. Warne, the tactician at the helm of Derby’s destiny, orchestrated a symphony of substitutions that befuddled the senses. Bizarre choices, akin to a chef adding chocolate to a savory stew, left observers questioning the very fabric of reality.

Not me.  Wildsmith is a whiner, fakes injuries, and another brainless decision today.  Never liked his attitude.

I don’t think. I let’s dis too much wrong. Not as commanding coming for crosses as Wildsmith. It a good shot-stopper and more lively with his distribution.

Because this years L1 division is populated with utter dross bar Pompey and Bolton.

The standard of football and officiating is truly appalling, though not to wholly blame the referee for our ineptitude once again this evening. It’s terrible that our focus has become catching teams on the break and set pieces - not withstanding Cash’s excellent finish tonight, we were otherwise clueless!

Idiotic challenge you could see him making several seconds before he did. Bradley did fantastically to head it straight to them and kick it straight to them before getting done for pace in behind for it too. Truly top notch play.

    Caught on his heels again!

Its what you get when you lose confindce because the manager dropped him!

He was dropped because of a run of sub-par performances and a lack of composure in the 2nd minute of the Oxford game. It doesn’t appear he’s learned a great deal on reflection!

As good as the shot was for their first goal, there was a great deal of good fortune about it.

The ball could have gone anywhere after Adams tackle, but it went straight to their player. Likewise, Cashin's header could have deflected a couple of degrees left or right, gone a few feet more or less, but it happened to sit up perfectly for their goalscorer. If somebody had tossed the ball to him from a few feet away, he couldn't have had it any easier. Barnsley appear to be having the rub of the green atm.

For all of the above I can’t remember us winning a second ball in the whole match.
