  1. Promotion is the aim. I will expect nothing until I've seen who the 10 to 12 new players are, how quickly they gel (or not) and how things go in the opening 12 games. Only then will we know where we stand. The rest is simply wishful thinking.

Of course we should do better than 7th. Huddersfield expected to do well having lost out to the Red Dogs at Wembley... they nearly joined us here in L1.

The moves you make in recruitment and how they work out will determine how well you do in the League. The aim will be to do better than this time round. It's not a given. Over to you Mr Warne.

I don’t - it is a direct quote from Barnes in the book by Ryan Hills - Pride: The Inside Story of Derby County in the 21st Century

It’s a good read, but is more of a reverse feel good story - starts well and ends up depressing!

So, it's probably better to start at the back and work forward, then?

It'd be that week or the week after, as most contracts run til/start from 1st July.

You're also the first person I've ever seen include the keeper in their formation!

Standard fare here in the Netherlands. Also done in FA coaching courses when I did the Level 3...

Believe Duff is linked with the Huddersfield job, so hopefully he'll go down this route and they'll appoint a plonker.

Hope you're right Tom lad but all we can go on is how things currently are. With that in mind I still think we'd have been better off with Barnsley getting promoted due to Wendy's aging squad.

  5. We know the fixtures are out on June 22nd at 09:00. We know the opening game is in the weekend of August 4th. 1st round of the Carabao in the midweek following. We know when the draws are for the Carabao and Pizza Cups. What I've not seen yet is when pre season training starts.

My guess would be Monday June 26th, giving the squad 6 full weeks to ramp up fitness, gel the Newbies into the squad and get used to whatever PWs preferred system will be for the new season. Including the keeper I think he might go for 1-3-4-2-1 or a 1-3-4-3.

  6. Hope is Champions. Expectation is top 6. All will, of course, be dependent on recruitment but, especially now we are allowed to pay moderate fees, we should be able to improve the squad in both quantity and quality and go on to finish higher than last season.

Those mentioning we will still be everybody's Cup Final are correct.

Referees? Those expecting anything better than this season (Rebecca Welch apart...) will be disappointed. Refereeing standards will be much the same as this season. Poor.

With regard to opposition, I'd have preferred Barnsley to go up. They have a young team that will be at least as good next season. Wendy have an old squad and, IMO, this was last chance saloon for them as they wouldn't have lasted the pace. Chuffed for Darren Moore but he now has a huge job on his hands replacing about half the squad with younger players.

We’re actually talking 2009 and Clough was there when Barnes was injured.

I stand corrected on the year. My previous post did state "IIRC" in relation to 2008. The link you quote shows Clough having concern following the injury received in the Stoke game. Do you have a link to the one you mentioned earlier where Clough "made him play"?

I’ve seen you and others post a similar sentiment about wing backs a few times now. It is possible for a player to be capable of playing as a more typical full back in a back 4 and as wing backs in a system with 3 centre backs. I don’t get where this idea comes from that if the player is a wing back then they can’t be a full back or vice versa?
Warne will probably favour a system with a back 3 as it has worked for him previously and he persisted with it towards the end of the season, if Warne and the club are able to recruit the right players with the ability to cover a couple of positions we will have the flexibility in the squad to play a number of systems if needed, which would be ideal.

No arguments from me on this post. Previous ones from several sources, have merely mentioned full backs without adding the qualifier of "capable of operating as a wing back". It's a difficult role as they are expected to have the defensive capabilities of a full back, the skill/nouse of a wing half as well as the attacking qualities a winger needs. They also need the will to play 3 roles in 1. IMO, NML lacks the defensive part somewhat plus he doesn't like the role. Same applies to Barks.

One might say we should have applied more thought and come up with your full meaning but that would would be us making assumptions on what you mean. Not something I would do. The clarification makes all clear.

We need 11 new players ( including Mcgoldrick & Roberts )

    New Keeper

    New RB New LB

    2 New CBs

    2 New Midfielders

    2 New Wide Men

    2 New Strikers

Only need an RB and LB if we are going to play  a back 4. PW's preferred route is a back 3 so....

Keeper. Will McGee get offered a new contract? If so, there's the 2nd keeper and I expect Loach to stay as player/coach as the 3rd choice keeper.

CBs. We currently have Foz, Rooney and Cash. 2 more needed IMO.

Midfielders. AM or DM? I think we'll go for 1 of each.

Wide men. I take it you mean wing backs. Hopefully Roberts will be 1 of them.  Get a RWB in as well. Maybe a 3rd as NML and Barks would rather play as orthodox wingers than wing backs.

Strikers. Interesting possibilities there. We have Didzy and Collo. What will PW go for? If he chooses 5 in MF and 2 up top, we'd need 2 more. However, if he goes 4 in MF and 2 10s behind a striker we'd only need the one extra striker in but we'd need another "10", maybe 2, as we only have Sibs and NML for that role.

Forecasting how many and for what positions is really a minefield as the requirements change greatly dependent on which formation Warne is going to plump for. Who he gets in and which position they play will point us in the right direction in regard to the frmation we can expect next season.

  10. Bielik will either be sold or loaned out for a fee. That takes his £20K a week wage off the books.

Knight may well want to move to a championship club in order to advance his career. Understandable.

We've lost a few from the squad. Older players let go and loanees returning to their parent clubs.

Unless there's players PW really doesn't want around and will try to sell or loan out, I would expect the rest of the squad to remain in tact. We then go for replacements for those no longer with us plus 3 or 4 extra bodies to give the squad more depth than last season's one and, hopefully, avoid the, IMO fatigue induced, dip we had from the 2nd week of February.

  11. LBs and RBs. You need those if you're going to go with a back 4. It's well known that PW prefers a back 3. Do we need to get any full backs in? Probably not. We need centre halves having just lost Chester, Stearman and Davies. If PW is going to persist with 3 at the back, it's wing backs we need, not FBs.

If Davies didn't rate Earnshaw so much why did he buy him for Forest? Where he was quite successfully for them.

I didn't say he didn't rate Earnshaw. I wrote that he didn't buy him. I wrote that the board bought him behind his back. I wrote that THAT was the reason he didn't give Earnshaw more game time. He was fit, BD simply left him out of the starting XI a lot because he was pissed off with the board going behind his back.

Davies was a terrible manager just moaned and moaned was always stirring trouble and he bought Claude Davies, Eddie Lewis, Robert Earnshaw say no more.

Actually, BD didn't buy Earnmore. Fans were up in arms at the lack of inward movement of players and the board decided they had to do something so they went out and bought Earnmore for £3M. BD was livid at the board going behind his back and, basically, infringing on his turf. That was the reason BD was so reluctant to give the lad game time.

  14. I cringed when I read "Stoke" and "Fozzy's Testimonial" in the same sentence. My memory immediately flashed back to, IIRC, 2008 and a pre season game at Pride Park. A two footed lunge, both off the ball and off the pitch, by Carl Dickinson basically ruined Giles Barnes' career. He was nowhere near the same player after that. He was offered, again IIRC, £5M to take injury induced retirement with the club also receiving an amount from the insurers. Giles wanted to try and resurrect his career. Fair play to him for wanting to try. That he never reached his previous level and got nowhere near his potential has me wondering if he ever regrets not taking the money?

I sincerely hope today's Stoke players are rather more charitable than Dickinson was although I have a suspicion Giles had wound him up as he was wont to do to opponents.

  15. Fortunately, these days managers know what they want from a player in a certain position. They then source a player who does exactly that and, hopefully, a bit more. No more taking a short arsed fox in the box goal machine and then asking them to be the target man.....

Hope we bump into each other again. Although we probably won't,  if you're in hospitality!

We're planning hospitality at a Pride Park game sometime this season. The rest of my visits, I'll be in the East Stand, hopefully in block F.

Pre match Neppy and then the Brunny. Post match is anybody's guess 😉

Where are we likely to get the biggest away allocations next season?

    Bolton, Wigan?

5K at Barnsley if they don't go up. At Wendy it's 6700 of all of the Leppings Lane is available, 3700 with the current safety restrictions and 2373 if they decide to give some of the tickets to their own fans. 4K at Blackpool. Wigan 4800. 4300 at Reading.
