No! I don't want a word! Tell me more...

From what I recall, after he was found floating in the sea all his assets were seized and it looked like they would be liquidated.

His son had taken over as chairman of a second club, Oxford United, Robert had tried to become chairman of both clubs but this had been ruled inadmissable.

I can't recall how Derby managed to avoid being swallowed up in the legal ramifications which followed Maxwell's death (How he came to be floating in the sea has never been properly established. I have an idea that he had only just severed his connections with the club but the "Maxwell out" campaign by supporters had been going on for some time. There was a massive court case involving the thefet of over 500 million pounds.

Yes, the Gregory incident was bad enough but it pales into insignificance alongside Maxwell.

I think it's the other end of the Maxwell reign that we were most in danger of disappearing mate. The wolves were at the door, the enemy at the gates, when Stuart Webb managed to bring Cap'n Bob on-board. Weren't we within hours of going to the wall....?

He who sups with the devil should have a long spoon

Meaning: If you eat with the devil, you need a (very) long spoon so that you can keep your distance. If you mix with bad people, you should be careful not to be influenced by them. A warning not to get too close when dealing with evil people.

You can't use working with new players as an excuse. I need to be careful how much detail I go into but Clough gets new players every summer and so far he has got rid of players that he himself has brought in. You will hear of another departure fairly soon that may shock some fans. We need to face the fact the Nigel Clough is not a good man manager, or club manager, and he is simply ruining Derby. All the fans that say "we will be ok" need to take their blinkers and see it for what it is...

Hmmm...

...don't managers sign players and move them all as part of the job?

...also, as for a player leaving he would shock a few, are you talking about a certain in form pacey forward?

Thank you very much, it's a very interesting part of the club's history.

But when I said would we exist without him, I thought he saved us from going bust completely? And didn't we restart as Derby County 1984 Ltd., or is that just in my ginger head?

If we have the lowest wage bill in the Championship, is it reasonable to expect us to be well in to the top half at the of the season?

I wouldn't normally point out something like this, as I have a real propensity to do it myself, but at the what of the season? I'd assume you meant end of the season, I just want to be sure.

Is there any reason to think we have the lowest wage bill in the division? If we did I'd have to applaud the board and Nigel, that would be some effort, especially considering our finish last year.

He may have done but at what cost. I refer the honorable gentleman to my post @#237.

An Austrian corporal may have created the autobahns and made German trains run on time but I rather think the negatives outweighed the positives!

Doubt we have the lowest, think Leeds, Wolves, Bolton. Blackburn, Cardiff, Leicester, Brum, Hull will definalty have higher bills than us.

Barnsley, Pboro, Millwall, Palace probably have lower wage bills than us

The rest may have higer bills or lower than ours, or the same hard to tell. Blackpool pay thier players the minimum wage during the off season! and offered Robbie Folwer £80 pw last season.

Wage bills have less of a factor is this legue look at Leicester struggled and how West Ham almost missed out on promotion on a mid table Prem bill.

Thanks for pointing out Albo - had a sandwich in one hand whilst typing. Cheese and ham if you're asking.

Yep I meant end of the season. Regarding the wage bill, it's been mentioned on here a few times that Derby's wage bill is one of, if not the lowest. It was a genuine question, as some people have said Clough's position should be seriously considered if we don't finish in the top half.

If it really is one of the lowest in the division, and we finish top half, I think that's an achievement in and of itself.

If that is the case then we've gone from being a bottom 6 club with one of the largest wage bills in the division, to a top half club with one of the lowest during Nigel's time here. If that really is the case then he has truly worked wonders in that department.
