Touch wood but the injury problems that plagued Clough's first 2-3 seasons now seem a thing of the past

I always believed it was because we had a lot of injury prone players like Pearson, Leacock and Davies but I read an awful lot of stuff from Johnny know all types on message boards alleging it was down to Clough's outdated training methods and ameteurish backroom staff. I think we have just got a lot of younger, fitter players now

Hughes, Roberts, fielding and Ward a doubt for Saturday

Derby County will have to play the waiting game as they wait to discover whether Jamie Ward, Frank Fielding, Gareth Roberts and Will Hughes will win their fitness battles to face Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

Ward, Fielding and Roberts all missed Derby’s 0-0 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion prior to the two-week international break, while 17-year-old Hughes was withdrawn at half-time with a niggling knee complaint.

The quartet have been working with Derby’s medical team throughout the international break to work on their personal rehabilitation programmes, with a view to taking on manageress Rovers at Pride Park on Saturday.

Roberts and Hughes are expected to shake off their respective hamstring and knee complaints to resume training by the end of this week, while manager Nigel Clough admits Ward’s hamstring problem and Fielding’s troublesome groin remain a cause for concern.

Clough said: “They’re all doing their own individual work and stepping up towards full fitness and we’d hope to, at least, see Gareth and Will back in contention and their injuries were only minor ones.

“With Jamie and Frank, it’s a little less clear at the moment. We’re guided by them to a degree and in Jamie’s case, he knows his body having had a few injuries in the past and we’ll see how he’s looking towards the end of the week.

“It’s a waiting game to a degree and if they’re not ready we certainly won’t be risking them, especially as we have three games coming up inside the next week or so.”

Clough has however refused to rule any of the players out of the running to face Blackburn, and added: “No-one beyond Shaun Barker and Conor Doyle is out at the moment and, fortunately, they’re not long-term injuries either so even if one or two of them don’t face Blackburn – they won’t be far away.”

Hughes missed training this week

Ward possibly back over Christmas

http://m.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/story.html?aid=17574130

WILL Hughes has not trained this week as a precaution after he suffered a knock on the ankle in Derby County's win against Leeds United.

The 17-year-old midfielder was replaced in the final minute of the Leeds game but he is expected to face Bristol City on Saturday.

Derby could be boosted by the return of Scottish midfielder Craig Bryson, who has missed two games with a knee injury.

Bryson did a one-on-one session with coach Johnny Metgod on Tuesday and trained with the rest of the squad yesterday.

If he suffers no reaction, he will be in the squad for the clash at Ashton Gate.

Striker Jamie Ward remains sidelined with a hamstring problem. He has not played since the victory over Nottingham Forest on September 30.

Manager Nigel Clough said: "Jamie is coming on but is not close to playing at the moment. We would hope to get him back some time over Christmas."
