Ah I can remember the days when 700 per week was a top wage

I remember this

Johnny Haynes becoming the first player to earn £100 per week...

and the general consensus was that football was going to the dogs

ABERDEEN striker Chris Maguire has moved a step closer to becoming a Derby County player.

Maguire passed a medical at the Rams' Moor Farm training ground yesterday.

Derby have also agreed personal terms with the 22-year-old and are now hoping to strike a deal with his current club regarding compensation.

Maguire is out of contract at the end of this month but, due to his age, does not automatically qualify for a free transfer under the Bosman ruling.

Aberdeen are entitled to compensation and want £400,000 but if the two parties cannot come to an agreement, the matter would have to be decided by a tribunal.

The Dons made their position clear – that they are not willing to budge on what they feel they are due for the Scotland international.

"We will take our fight for compensation to the very highest level if we have to," said Aberdeen director of football Willie Miller.

"Efforts are continuing in the hope of persuading Derby County to agree to pay the compensation fee due in accordance with the guidelines laid down by UEFA.

"But if we are forced to go to a tribunal we will make every effort possible to protect our interests and the interests of Scottish football.

"We will ask the SPL and the SFA to give us their full support to ensure that Derby are made to pay what they are due."

Maguire, who was due to go on holiday today, scored 12 goals in 44 appearances for Aberdeen last season.

He earned his second senior cap for Scotland when he came on as a 75th-minute substitute during Sunday night's 1-0 Nations Cup defeat to the Republic of Ireland in Dublin.

Derby, meanwhile, remain in the hunt to sign forward Nathan Tyson from Nottingham Forest.

Tyson is set to become a free agent when his contract at the City Ground expires this summer.

Forest have confirmed that the 29-year-old's five-and-a-half-year spell at the club is coming to an end after he turned down the offer of a new deal.

Tyson's father, Len, who is acting as his advisor, said: "We have a lot of options now but we have probably narrowed it down to four clubs and will be making a decision soon.

"Finance will play a part in his decision, of course, but his family will be his main consideration. His kids always come first."

Millwall this week reportedly ended their interest in signing Tyson after talks broke down.

Ipswich Town have also been linked with the forward.

The player is not allowed to become a Ram until his contract with Aberdeen runs out at the end of the month anyway.

It will go to a tribunal no doubt, exactly like the Tranmere deal for Davies. Think we can say that he will be wearing a Rams jersey for the coming season anyhow.

He Looks like a good prospect. Think its interesting that he was offered a 3 year deal straight up as well on fairly good wages by some accounts . They obviously expect his value to rise this year and don't want to see him leave (for Celtic in a January transfer window) on the cheap after a year and a half.
