Avoid Covent Garden like the plague!  Trust me on that! Why so many Rams go there rather than the hundreds of pubs serving decent ale and liquor, I have literally no idea and I used to live off Long Acre!

FWIW, you should know that nights for discerning older clients, irrespective of location, will not tolerate folk intent on moshing to Gloria Gaynor.

We have our limits! 😂

Oi! I was only 45 at the time! 🤭

We'd been in the Thai Pot for most of the afternoon, then the Lemon Tree and at some godforsaken hour, some of the young 'uns took us to a basement club. Several rounds of B52s at the bar, then hit the dancefloor (not literally). I woke up around 4am in the doorway of a townhouse. Got a taxi back home and found I had a 2" gash in my elbow. No Idea how I got that.

Bostin' night all round I'd say 😱

Done Karaoke once in a near empty pub. Ballad with one of my best mates. Wrong choice 🥴🤣

I'm a bit of a Neil Diamond fan.  I chose one of his at my sister's wedding reception.
It wasn't until I walked off to boo's that it dawned on me that Love on the rocks was probably not the best choice for a wedding reception!

*true story, bro... apart from the booing... I aced it! 🎵

True story,  at my  mate's wedding,  the DJ played Band of Gold straight after the first dance.😒

Have you any YouTube clips @Kinder

No mate, we haven’t ever bothered with promo stuff, we seem to get enough gigs without it. All the videos I’ve got are taken by mates who were smashed, so nothing I’d post online!

As above if you like Northern Soul there are occasional nights in Derby - 102 club has a monthly one - it's a bit like going back in time but that's fine if you think the past was better.   Also not everyone's cup of tea but The White Horse has free bands on and can be fun - my brother hates it which is usually a recommendation.   For 80s and 90s doesn't PopWorld play that- I assume you'd be twice the age of anyone else in there but I can't say Ive ever been in.

Ok you wonderful movers, shakers and drinkers….

Being non native to Derby I’m asking for opinions of the nightlife especially for us over 50s. We want great dancing to 80s or older tunes. We did Liverpool a few weeks ago and the people, ale and pubs were superb but sadly let down by the music venues.
Can anyone suggest where we are ‘guaranteed’ Spandau, Duran, Depechè, Human League etc etc if one exists at all. Need to book soon. Nottingham yes Nottingham is our alternative for when we are free for a Saturday bop…. And ale. I’m good with the ale venues as a CAMRA member and had some memorable sessions in the wonderful city. Appreciate comments. 🐏 🍺 🕺

It used to be that some men went out to enjoy a lot of beer - the CAMRA member type - and some went out to meet women at discos. The former type were rarely interested in discos and dancing. Also the drinking meant that they were of little use to the women. I was in neither camp. I just liked a quiet night in. When I was in my 50s the thought of going to a disco would have seemed horrific.

Maybe the music you liked in your 50s was rubbish? Or at least was just the sort of music you could only listen too on a quiet night in.

You’d look a bit odd dancing to the music I like (Bach, Tallis, Byrd). I’m not having a go at the OP. I just finding it hard to understand someone in their fifties who wants to jump around to that music. Cave divers and people who put sauce on their food are also enigmas to me. The last time I went to a disco was around 1975. It was the one at the bottom of Babbington Lane. The noise was horrible and I didn't stay long. As I left I remembered that there was a late showing of Death in Venice in the Eagle Centre theatre. I went there and that was the first time I heard the adagietto from Mahler’s fifth symphony. The contrast between the high I got from the glorious music in that excellent film and the hellish hubbub of the disco made it clear to me that discos were not my thing.

Absolutely fair enough @Normanton Lad. Classical can be sublime, but it’s unlikely I’ll get my fix of Buddy Holly/Beatles/ Elvis on a Saturday night and the 80s bars that are becoming harder to find at least get my feet moving. From 50s to 80s is my thing but as there are fewer of us hitting the nightlife it’s not the attraction for the bars to play it I guess, they want footfall and people spending their bucks! Specialist club would attract a good crowd though I’m sure

I don’t know anything about dancing, but I was surprised and impressed by some old people I saw dancing around 1990. Benny Green was being interview in the street and I stopped to watch what was going on. It was something to do with a local jazz festival and when he finished a jazz band started playing. About four men in their 60s or 70s started dancing by themselves in front of the band. They didn’t seem to care who was watching. They were just enjoying themselves. I can’t remember exactly what kind of jazz music it was or what the dancing looked like, but I know that I had never seen old men dancing like that before. It was not something I would ever have done, but they seemed to be happy enough and they weren’t annoying anyone so good luck to them.
