MadAmster
TV Vickers 5.5 Got away with several mistakes 1st half. Better 2nd Nelson 6.5 The odd mistake but mainly solid Wilson 5.5 Invisible opening 20. Nowhere near his usual standards John-Jules 5 Pretty ineffective. Needs to learn to stay on his feet rather than go down at the slightest touch Bradley 5.5 Few errors opening minutes and OK after that Barkhuizen 6 nothing bad but nothing above average either Collins 6 based on his 2nd half. Invisible 1st half except for his falling wardrobe imitations. Gives too many fouls away as well Thompson 5 Twice poor first touch in the box saw scoring chances lost and his general play wasn't up to standard Mendez-Laing 7 best of a bad bunch by a mile Sibley 5 not at the races Bird 7 improved the MF, all to no avail Elder 6 Not good, not bad. I'm still not sure which question he's the answer to. Much better going forward than in defence and he's a defender Cashin 6 huffed and puffed but, like his teammates, couldn't make a difference Fornah 5 not the player he was in his first 3 appearances this season Hourihane 7 improved the MF, all to no avail Ward 6 Not good, not bad. I'm still not sure which question he's the answer to. Much better going forward than in defence and he's a defender. The team 5 too many misplaced passes. Too many times the first touch was poor. Too many times we were nowhere near the 2nd ball. Too many times their man in possession had 2 or more teammates open and unmarked to receive a pass. Too many times their players could romp through midfield unchallenged. Too many poor tackles. It seems that, at the moment, both Sibley and Thommo are better 30 minute subs than they are starters. Ian Buxton's Bat
RTV Vickers 5.5........been reasonably impressed with him thus far but looked iffy with feet first half. Good saves second half. Nelson 6.........did OK but his rubbish pass after 20 seconds set the tone Wilson 6.5.......not his best day but always tries to make things happen (See Elder...) John-Jules 4.5.......in danger of starting to look a bit like a talented footballer who thinks he's too talented for this level. Needs to improve work-rate and have a bit of grunt about him and he'll be decent.....but difficult when the ref gives fouls against you for daring to have a pulse Bradley 6........did OK Barkhuizen 5.5.........tries to make things happen but not his most effective night Collins 6........zero service......zero favours from ref......surprised he was risked in the game to be honest Thompson 5.....best of a bad midfield in the first half. Thought he did well with his chance - good defending tbf Mendez-Laing 6.......injected some needed threat Sibley 4........one cross and that's about it Bird 6.5........improved the midfield but several Hollywood passes just gave the ball away Elder 5........not a great defender and rarely tries to make things happen. Seems to take the safe option every time.....and then doesn't always execute it. Genuine question: has he put in a cross yet? 2nd half v Posh gives me hope there's a player in there Cashin 6.5......did OK Fornah 4.......as someone on the match thread said, too much fannying around with the ball in midfield rather than moving it quickly. Looks great when he escapes from a tangle and bursts forward but looks self-indulgent when he loses it Hourihane 6.5 ......improved midfield. Does what Fornah doesn't and shifts the ball from congested areas into space Ward 4......not his best night. Not sure if it was him or Elder to blame for the goal. Not a massive fan of 5 at the back but I don't think we can't carry both in a back 4. For much of the first half it seemed we were playing long hoofball to Collins, who didn't have a chance.......was this because of lack of trust in the midfield or a reaction to terrible passing in first few mins? Unclear, but set-up and tactics seemed to be as much an issue as poor individual performances. On TV it seemed that we were better in the second half despite losing it. Vickers 6.5 kept the score respectable Nelson 6 didn’t do much wrong Wilson 6 tried to make things happen John-Jules 4.5 needs to toughen up Bradley 6 did ok Barkhuizen 3 more lazy arse than a lazy arse from lazyarse land Collins 5 kept trying, no service Thompson 5.5 needs to play one position, trying to cover the whole pitch Mendez-Laing 6 Sibley 3 big sibbo fan but waste of a shirt last night Bird 🦅 6 Elder 4.5 looked very unsteady Cashin 6.5 showed some grit and fight Fornah 3 awful, needs a constant run of games Hourihane 6.5 gets stick but we miss his quality when not playing Ward 3 not the same player since injury atg Ellafella
Ellafella
Vickers: 6 Distribution for the first 20 minutes was Sunday League-esque (skyscraper kicks or hospital passes vaguely in the direction of a defender in a white shirt). Settled down thereafter and made 3 good saves. No fault for the goal. Nelson: 6 Individually good for the most-part but part of a collective-defence that looked like keystone Kops.com especially during the opening minutes when the ball kept coming back to our box. The presence/absence of Nyambe is a key variable here. Wilson: 6.5 Some promising moments but disappointed to see him going to ground unconvincingly looking for a FK, which is not acceptable for me. John-Jules: 6.5 Also some promising moments but still quite raw and a bit of a lone shark who doesn't seek to link up with teammates; needs a lot more game time and I now feel he isn't going to click anytime soon; certainly not in the timeframe we need so suspect he'll remain bit-part or return to London. Bradley 6: Headed and cleared adequately but not always a reader of the situation and sometimes not in the right place. Barkhuizen: 5.5 Didn't show enough certainly not commensurate with his talent/experience. Not helped by being part of an ever-changing side/formation; he looked "seasick" after te final whistle. Collins: 5.5 Felt for Collo as he attempted to control Vickers's skyscraper kicks for the first 20 mins. He needs to be careful when challenging headers as he now seems to be all elbows - refs will take action. Thompson: 6.0 Energy and covered the turf but 50% of a headless chicken midfield. Mendez-Laing: 7.0 Brought much-needed injection of pace and power and possession for the 2nd 45 but toiled tout seul. Sibley: 5.0 Why does he have these "no shows"? Lots of talent but where is his "on" switch? Bird 🦅 6.5 Along with NML he brought some control and possession and threat but couldn't influence a losing battle sufficiently. Elder 4.0 Failed to have an impact and was responsible for not "snuffing out" their scorer Stubbs. Cashin 7.5 Looked like the only footballer on the pitch after his introduction. Fornah 5.0 Has faded since his promising start and struggled to keep possession/control and was the other 50% of the headless chicken midfield. Hourihane 6.5 Exacted some control on his introduction and kept the ball moving. Ward: 4.0 Several unforced errors - misplaced pass straight to a rugby-shirted opponent, a couple of overhit crosses and co-calamity with Elder in failing to challenge Stubbs for the headed goal. He wouldn't make my squad selection on Monday, even without Nyambe. The performance was not acceptable and I suspect/hope that the cold night, bumpy pitch, lack of a crowd, and a "Groupthink" borne of complacency accounts for that ie that we have got it out of the system and won't approach the next match and fall into the same collective malaise. If those factors don't account for what we witnessed, I'm concerned because we will fall short if it stems from other factors such as our shape and tactics. Let's hope it's the former and that we have some talent entering via the open window. Last night burst a bubble. Bradford beat us without really breaking much of a sweat. Never fussed about this tournament, just as the players weren't in this game, not bothered about a lack of Wembley trip, saves me money! Vickers 6 think Wildsmith needed a break, been off it for a few games IMO, but Vickers not really laying claim for the spot. Nelson 6, poor by his standards but still ok Wilson 5.5 didn't seem to get going at all John-Jules 4 very disappointed in last couple of games, after a couple of flashes of ability in his cameo appearances oreviousky, can see us sending him back if we have a viable replacement lined up. Bradley 6, won a lot of headers in open play, think set pieces he's told to zonal mark, not take a man, we appear to do a mix and think it needs looking at. Barkhuizen 5, didn't really affect the game Collins 5, as a senior player he should have had words about his service, won nothing in the air all game. Thompson 5, not ready to start games. Mendez-Laing 6, flashes of quality when came on but quickly faded Sibley 4, big fan but yet again misses his chance to make a statement, can only be used as an impact sub with 30 to go at minute, wonder if lack of visibility of long term future I'd affecting him, not seen any talk of a contract extension for him. Bird 6, same as NML Elder 5, for all his detractors, Forsyth is still our best left sided option in either formation. Cashin 6, see Nelson Fornah 3, had high hopes for him as seemed to have mobility and a bit of skill, but just wants too many touches when in possession and constantly getting caught. Hourihane 6, see NML and Bird Ward 5, defensively suspect, made no attempt to put off the goal scorer, whether he should have been marking him or not, needed to do better, couple of good crosses but not enough to keep his place. angieram
Vickers 6 - a good save but his distribution was poor, unlike at Fleetwood Nelson 6 Wilson 6 - thought he did okay. I'd have took Ward off instead of him. John-Jules 5 not quite working for him yet Bradley 6 - didn't do much wrong but he does look hesitant when the ball is coming towards him. Barkhuizen 5.5 played better second half at wingback than he did as a forward. Interesting as he is on record as saying he doesn't like the position. Collins 5 - was getting mugged by the defenders trying to challenge for all those high balls and resorted to dark arts, which didn't work either Thompson 5 - not sure of logic in changing all of midfield as they hadn'tplayed together and it showed, none performed well but isn't necessarily a reflection of how they're going to play if selected individually Mendez-Laing 7 power and pace but not very productive Sibley 5 one good cross, otherwise see Tommo. Bird 🦅 6.5 tried to make things happen, was closed down quickly Elder 5 struggled after his recent good performances. Should have done better with their goal Cashin 6.5 Fornah 5 one bit of magic, otherwise see Tommo and Sibley Hourihane 6 Ward 4 poor game and was amazed he was kept on the pitch. Where is the player we saw at the start of the season? Did he help or hinder Elder for their goal? Not sure but they failed between them. ATG - cold, flat atmosphere, terrible pitch. I didn't perform well as a spectator, so have some sympathies with the team in that respect! Ellafella
