What ever happened to White Christmas and the Wizard of Oz?

I seem to have memories of watching the Wizard of Oz every christmas day when younger, not even a Christmas film.

I am sure it must still be on on channel 4 or something every year.

So, Wizard of Oz isn't a Christmas film but Die Hard is?

Christmas has changed since I was a kid :(

Out of interest i just googled 'best christmas films' and found one rating the top 100 films, most of those mentioned included Die Hard are on there, the original miracle on 34th street was top and muppets christmas carol second.

Some unusual ones making an appearance including at number 27 Eyes Wide Shut.

Reckon after the turkeys been served and in the inlaws are relaxing on the sofa post meal, i'll bang that on the TV....Might be one way to get a peaceful Christmas the year after :)

Never have. Never will.

Can’t stand the carp. The only decent Bruce Willis film is the one where he is dead and the little kid won’t tell him he is dead.

Before you lynch me, I have not seen Rocky either, at least not since he left Bullwinkle and went solo. Can’t think of a single Stallone film I have seen either...not even his porno.

But whoever said Titanic...wash your mouth out with salt water.

Worst movie ever made (until they made Avatar anyway). I was barracking for the iceberg after not very long....

Can't say it's crap without watching it, 132 minutes long, get it done.

You've slagged off a few things there. Maybe you could give us a couple of examples of a good film.

12 Monkeys was an excellent film with Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. Titanic and Avatar both are good movies however overly long; Mr Cameron could have cut at least 20 minutes out of both of them without any detriment to the overall quality of the films.

What films do you have a penchant for?

Mr Cameron could have at least an hour from Titanic and it might’ve made it bearable but nothing, I fear, could’ve saved Avatar short of cutting at least 2.5 hours from it. The only kind thing I can say about it is that it stood up for the rights of Smurfs everywhere....oh, and the special effects were incredible.

As for my taste, it ranges across the spectrum from arthouse to comedy and drama to old B&W films.

In terms of ‘popular culture’, I do like most of the Star Wars’ films. Life of Brian is probably the film I have seen most often (actually delete ‘probably’; it is, by many multiples). Sixth Sense was excellent (even though I cannot stand Bruce Willis for some reason). Seven was a terrific film. Schindler’s List. Now you’ve reminded me of 12 Monkeys, I did like that. Some of the absurdly slapstick comedies of the 80s and 90s - The Naked Gun, Flying High, etc - are classics. Some slasher horror films are good fun if you accept them for what they are (The Evil Dead, The Exorcist, The Omen come to mind.)

And The Damned United ranks as one of the better sporting movies I have seen tbh.

I’ll have to think further. I have been awake most of the night so the juices aren’t really flowing right now.

Yeah, really awful movies in my view too Titanic just a ridiculous overblown love story, with a predictable ending (obviously). An Avatar was just one seemingly interminable environmental lecture from James Cameron, with blue aliens thrown in. Encouraging more  environmental awareness is great...but it's not what you want from a sci-fi movie. and not in such a heavy-handed manner. Couldn't care less what happened ton any of the characters by the end of either move, never a good sign.

For me, Die Hard is entirely different. Perfectly enjoyable nonsense, although immediately forgettable, in fact they've all blended into one for me. But well worth a viewing.

Just saw 'Once Upon a Time in the West again recently'.... now, that's a movie! Epic and memorable.
