IronRam 140.6
What a difference 50 odd years makes. 2-3-5 to 4-1-2-2-1!!! What is it with the modern trait of playing 1 up top, when the actual "name of the game" is to score more than the opposition? Is all this 4-2-3-1 & 4-3-3 & 4-1-4-1. Just mangers doing the hipster "everyone else seems to be doing it" thing. It really marginalises strikers of a certain type (Bent for instance). I love Ranieri and Leicester for breaking the mold. Is British football is too blood and thunder for the slow possession based systems we see too much of in the PL/Championship these days. I for one would love to see two strikers tearing it up at the ipro. Saunders &Goddard anyone? ?

Thierry Ennui
Baffles me why we don't just stick 10 up front, we'd score loads.

RamNut
There's a book called 'Inverting the Pyramid' that explains the tactical evolution that went from 235 to 532. Its quite good. ancelotti's name feature quite alot a one point....something regarding his milan side you can get the whole book for free here..... http://m.friendfeed-media.com/210a0a82efcf9234b3c3118cba515073b0a30169
Sexydadbod
English teams, including the national team, have realised that they need to adapt the formations to keep up with their fellow counterparts across europe and the globally, although they're so far behind the rest because other nations have perfected their teams in many formations. For example many have adapted the well known 4-3-3 cruiff inspired netherlands team
Shang
Modern football is mainly a battle in midfield and keeping a passing triangle where any player on the ball should be able to pass to 2 team mates feet all the time. Definitely something that's come over from the continent and the type of players being brought into the Premier League. Having two up front makes this that much harder, as the distance between players in a 4-4-2 means players have to run longer to make up the triangles and gaps. Dropping another player into the gaps allows more fluid passing and quicker transitions from defense to attack. With Bent he's a poacher and guy who runs onto balls; the ball-to-feet type of playing doesn't work for him. When playing with Martin it doesn't quite work because Martin likes to drop into the hole and pass into the path of on-runners, where Bent plays off the last player. Even though Martin is a top passer, he can't get the angles to pass into Bents path because Bent would normally be behind him.
Duracell
I enjoy seeing any tactics being executed well. My favourite side to watch is Barcelona for the pure joy football, but that's just as much to do with seeing how they work the ball and space and what they do off the ball as it is the stunning moves they produce themselves. I used to find watching Pulis' Stoke side strangely satisfying. If you're winning, your tactics are spot on. And that Stoke side punched well above its weight. Alph
You get specialised players now. Why have 2 jack of all trade midfielders when you can have one defensively smart one and one attacking playmaker one. Why play them alongside each other when you can get 2 or 3 of a particular type and then mould the balance. The box to box midfielder is pretty much dead. Just easier to give everyone simple tasks rather than too much multi tasking. Actually think Bryson. Considered a box to box midfielder? But he's not. He's far better in opponents half than ours. Why not free up his defensive duties slightly by giving someone like Thorne a role.
Sexydadbod
There are actually still quite a lot of box to box mids in the game but just not in the english game. The best box to box mids out there currently are arturo vidal, sven bender, gundogan , rakitic, matuidi, naiangolan, marchiso, roberto pereyra. I don't know if it's a coincidence if the best box to box mids develop in serie a or the bundesliga. May just be a cultural thing. The best box to box mid in the english game is probably aaron ramsey

It's a shame that Juve have lost some key players recently like pirlo, tevez and vidal but I tell you what that Dybala kid looks special. I know juve had roberto pereya on loan last season signing him on a permanent deal is good business. He could be as good as vidal in a few years. RamNut
My favourite formation from the book was the one which preceded 235 the awesome and original football formation 226! three strikers on either side of the pitch were expected to go head down and just charge ahead until they got tackled it was then anticipated that the ball would break to another striker to repeat the process. passing was considered effeminate and clogging was allowed. great stuff if i was clement i'd have them practicing that. beats sideways passing any day.
