Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy is considering a January move for Derby striker Conor Sammon, according to a report in Ireland.

The Irish Independent claims the Blues and last night’s opponents Blackburn are amongst a number of Championship clubs eyeing the 27-year-old, who is currently out of the Rams’ starting XI.

The Dubliner played youth football with local side Cherry Orchard, then moved on to UCD, Derry City, Kilmarnock and then Wigan before joining Derby for £1.2 million in the summer of 2012, signing a four-year contract.

Since then Sammon, who has won nine full Ireland caps, has made 47 starts and 17 sub appearances, scoring 12 goals.

If we can find a better player for the fee, sell anyone.

Sammon can look awkward, so he's easy to underestimate, but he unsettles defenders and makes things happen. I wouldn't be in any hurry to offload him.

Yes, but so what? Sammon has a set of attributes to bring to the squad and gets underestimated, if he goes fine so long as we get a better player instead.

He's a super sub, not competition for Martin. But Martin's on 10 for the season and (apart from last night) has been one of our best players all season, do we really need competition when this competition will most likely not keep him out of the team and not have the impact of Sammon coming off the bench?

But, we can't play the same style we do when Martin's playing if Sammon's on the pitch.
