Leisure time (and money) is both precious and scarce now so travelling round the country to watch football really is a labour of love.

Its like Daveo said a few pages back, we'd sell out at the Emirates/Old Trafford/Etihad for a cup match no problem....we just need our mojo back...over to you Nige!

No one really needs to justify why they don't go to games, home or away. In 1993/94 I went to 41 out of 56 Rams matches from my home in Oxford because at the time I lived at home with my folks and had no ties or financial commitments. It didn't make me feel a better or more loyal supporter than someone who only managed half a dozen games a season. I personally don't go to many games because of the cost and because I do not consider that the current team is worth the outlay when I could spend my money on more worthwhile things, like going out with my family etc. I also think that in the modern era there are so many other ways to follow the club - online etc - that didn't exist in my heyday that many people prefer to follow from afar. Ultimately though for me, football has become a 'nice to do' rather than a 'have to do', and at a time when my pay has reduced year on year football has become an occasional treat rather than regular thing.

You make a good point here Jayram in that when we were younger the only way to be part of it was to go to the games. The internet didn't exist, hardly any tv coverage (goals on the local news if you were lucky) so the DET report on Monday was all you had. If you were interested, you had to go to the match.

These days you can see the goals online not long after they've gone in, get a feel for what's going on and discuss everything on forums like this, see extended highlights or even the full 90 minutes on TV/Ramsplayer. You can almost feel like you've been even when you've not left your house. So if you're interested but not really that bothered and/or can't afford the outlay, there isn't really that much incentive to go to games.

How you forget the green 'un? Essential Saturday night/Sunday morning reading!

I forgot about that! Used to read it at my granddads Saturday night and then try and fail to stay up for match of the day!! Was about 7 at the time.

This was after listening on the radio to the game and checking the scores on teletext! I feel old

I used to remember waiting at the paper shop ("newsagents" for you posher folk!) for the Green Un to arrive. Most Saturdays when I was younger, I used to not consume alcohol until night time, so I'd go to the match, then straight home, which involved the green un.

It was also good because I was in it loads of times, I imagine many of us here had our team photos or goals mentioned in the local round-up!

Leicester away ....£15, free coach travel ...... not all spaces taken up, by some way yet.

Is it just money that keeps our away support low ?

We have won 2 games already in cup ... good away record this season, local derby ..... not far to travel ....

Accepted midweek, hard for some to get time off work - this is the only downside to this game surely ?

At £15 and free travel it is cheap and should attract a good following. I hate to think how many would be going without free travel.

Although actually this shows free travel perhaps is not an incentive a speople prefer to make their own way to games - part of the experience rather than meet the police...sit for 45minutes on a bridge .... then get to empty ground 1 hour before kick off

So ..... maybe it is about the experience and not the price ? to an extent

The Nottingham Supporters coach was always the best in the 1990's for the reason it avoided the Police escorts/meets to Ernie's annoyance and would arrive at grounds 15minutes before kick off with no escort.

Reason - we would arrange to stop at country pub 15 miles from towns we played at.

Seeing plods expressions as we meandered towards grounds was priceless, reading Police letters on next coach to games "though must meet us on bridge, road XYZ or else"

London games traveeling through London rather than M25 was a day out, and fun too .....

Drunk chap on microphone running a commentary on the locals ........

Yes, football is no longer an experience of a day out.

It is a stand on the concourse, or else be the only one of 100 pesons in seated area .......listening to musioc belting out.

so to stnad outside ground becomes the option of least torture

The game .... good to watch.  Atmosphere ...... do not expect, do not be disppointed .....

Most away atmospheres are when we are losing ...Coventry away under Phil Brown springs to mind!

Probably be sent to jail and banned for 3 years now from 5 miles of all grounds on a Saturday, Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday evening nowadays ........

So in conclusion the MATCHDAY WHOLE experiince has changed ....

Thanks to Mrs Thatcher safer standing, safer coach travel??? somehow ??? Police diktat state ........ and SKY ..... Premier Leagur exists only ........

I had an away season ticket for the 09/10 season which was poor for away results we struggled and more times than not came away from fixtures like boro away or even Plymouth that season we lost away thinking why do I do it?

An away game every now and then but as Mostyn says I was quite pleased by the tickets for forest getting eaten up quickly now I'll enjoy it at the pub.

My main reason besides the obvious which is money, in the promotion season was my first on the road really and the support to the games away was brilliant and the atmosphere even better! We've languished in this league leaving people despondent, a good run will mean the sales increase I'm sure.

Gone are the days of having a big end of season away day party which used to be great, to get that support would be brilliant oh and,

Sing the older songs they work fine we don't need any newens. They sent out the message!

IRam, saying 5-1 away 'a decent result' and wondering if people who went if they thought 'if it was worth it', surely you're on a wind up?

One last question, are you kicking yourself that you didn't go now?

Alright maybe 5-1 is a bit more than decent but Millwall are in disarray at present - just look at Lomas' quotes after the game/reaction of fans etc.

My question refers to the overall financial cost of travelling to the game and the fact that very few (if any) who went to Millwall have contributed to this thread. Did you go?

I'm not particularly gutted about missing the game as I had an awesome weekend regardless. If the same fixture comes around next year I'll be more inclined to go as I've only recently moved to London.

No I didn't go. If it was in Cromford I may well have gone as that's 3 stops from Belper. I go to 5-6 away games a year. Done Yeovil and Burton (if you count friendlies). Bournemouth, Barnsley and Sheff Wed are definites.

Just to say that I thought the support last night, wet Tuesday night and Bolton, was excellent.  Can only guess at the numbers but the noise level was very good, though my ears are ringing still from standing close to the drum (he's good though).  Much better than the home support which was neither loud nor high in numbers, though not much booing!

724 Rams fans made it last night. Fair play to every single one of them for making the effort but still not great! Hopefully 10 points from 12 will help our away followings improve. Maybe the results away from home will sell a few more for Leicester and upcoming away days in the league (exl forest), 3 points against Reading wouldn't hurt either.
