I think the players you have listed who we would spend money on are a bit odd. Nobody would spend 2 million on Greg Halford because that doesn't reflect his true market price.

However I still think you theory is right.

A more realistic example would be that I think more people would see the board 'backing nigel' if we spent 1.5 million on Billy Sharp than if we got Simeon Jackson on a free even though most people would say Jackson is a much better player. Just because people see oh we spent 1.5 million over oh he came on a free agent.

I agree that some people only look at the money spent, but I think most look at the quality of the signing, or potential, when judging whether or not the signing is any good. My examples were simply that. I know the amounts are ridiculous, but we have bought expensive crap before Davis Earnshaw Miller etc.

A host of Championship clubs are battling to land Sunderland midfielder David Vaughan, who looks set to leave the club on loan.

Vaughan was left out of Sunderland's squad for their win over rivals Newcastle at the weekend, and new boss Gus Poyet is ready to sanction his departure.

Welsh international Vaughan almost left the club in the summer when newly promoted Crystal Palace failed to push through a move.

Now 30-year-old Vaughan, who has played three games for Sunderland this season, is set to leave.

Sky Sports understands Nottingham Forest, Queens Park Rangers, Leicester City, Derby County and his former club Blackpool are all keen to land Vaughan - who is expected to move before the weekend.

I'd like him as a signing but unless we were going to play him as the out and out full back I'm not sure where he'd fit.

I'm not sure he's the answer to our left back needs. I think we need a specialist.

The limited number of times I've seen him it's seemed he's shifted more into a midfield role over the last couple of years. lots of energy, good and tidy with the ball (a bit underestimated actually)

Do we need another midfielder, would it help Jeff and WIll to develop if someone more experienced came in or would it block them?

If we don't need another midfielder would he play the attacking wing back role?

Fullback?

He's a midfielder int he?

Yeah centre mid I believe.

Jeff tweeted this yesterday so surely he isn't too far from returning. Would prefer us to sign a left back rather than another midfielder

Whenever my legs are tired, I have a trip to the sauna and the steam room, perhaps he should try that instead of smoking 'herbal' wacky-backy.

Signed to predominantly play either left-back or left-midfield it was not until Ian Holloway was appointed Blackpool manager in 2009 that he found his calling as an all-action central midfielder.

Holloway’s Spanish inspiration meant he shaped Blackpool into a 4-3-3 formation, Vaughan coming in off the left hand side to play more centrally alongside Keith Southern and Charlie Adam. This new formation and style of play would take Blackpool from relegation candidates to play-off hopefuls to the Premier League. Their three play-off games saw them score nine, concede six but win every game by a single goal. It was the perfect template of how they play; on the front foot, looking to score goals, even if it means leaving themselves vulnerable at the back.

Cheers. He's been a midfielder for most of his career mind, well over a decade. I remember us smashing Crewe 5-1 and he played left mid, scoring their goal. Probably like Ben Davies does for us, just fills in when needed.

I can't imagine him as a full back nowadays, he literally isn't physically built to be one.

I remember him playing for Blackpool when they were promoted, looked like a more "cultured" version of Eustace allowing Charlie Adam to play a bit more freely and push forward. The two of them were excellent that year and played an enormous part in the promotion.

I wouldn't mind this signing at all, would provide a challenger/cover for the role Eustace is doing at the moment. Plus he's a few years younger and so would be able to take over from Eustace if he moves on next year (that's if it were with a view to permanent of course).
