David Vaughan

PAOLO DI CANIO'S appreciation of Tyne-Wear derby hero David Vaughan will be tested in the summer when Derby County make a move for the Sunderland midfielder.

Vaughan was assured a place in Wearside folklore when he struck the sweetest of goals to wrap up the memorable 3-0 win over Newcastle United earlier this month.

The 30-year-old was immediately jumped on by Di Canio in the heat of the celebrations at St James' Park in scenes which will be forever remembered by Sunderland fans.

Vaughan has had a new lease of life under the Italian boss after spending January wondering whether he had played his last game for the Black Cats after falling out of favour under Martin O'Neill.

But that has not put off Derby, who are monitoring the player's situation ahead of a summer in which the Rams want to become genuine promotion contenders in the Championship.

Vaughan still has a further season to run on the contract he signed after leaving Blackpool as a free agent in the summer of 2011.

And Di Canio will have a decision to make when Derby act on their interest, knowing how Sunderland could demand a fee for a player who could easily have been freed after a frustrating time under O'Neill.

Di Canio only has Matt Kilgallon and Titus Bramble in the squad he has inherited set to become free agents during the close-season. Decisions will not be made on either until the end of the campaign.Vaughan has made 50 appearances during his time at the Stadium of Light and has maintained his place in the Wales squad during that time.

It is likely to be only when Sunderland have finished their season at Tottenham on May 19 that Di Canio also finds out what the situation is with full-back Danny Rose.

The defender has been the one constant success story during a frustrating season but he is set to return to White Hart Lane at the end of his season-long loan.

O'Neill was keen to keep him and Di Canio shares similar beliefs, although Tottenham have sent a scout to monitor his progress in recent weeks. Either way the England Under-21s left-back will not come cheap and a £5m price-tag has already been suggested.

Who would you take out the team for him though?

Bryson?

Hendrick?

Hughes?

All about the squad, and squad rotation. if they are all fit then its a difficult choice, if one is unfit then it becomes easier.

Choosing your midfield to suit the type of games you are playing would be a great advantage, whilst keeping others fresher.

But surely if Vaughan was to come here, he would demand first team football?
