The 3 clubs that came down from the Premiership were awful, they will be better next season that much is a given. The teams that come down from the premier league look likely to be 3 of QPR Aston Villa Southampton Reading Wigan Sunderland. Palace Leicester Brighton Middlesborough Forest Leeds Blackburn Derby Burnley Millwall Charlton Bolton Blackpool Ipswich Huddersfield Wolves QPR Aston Villa Wigan Sheffield United Swindon Tranmere That looks incredibly tough on paper. I think we will need a quality goalscorer, a left back and Barker at his best to stand a chance at the playoffs. Also Ward, Brayford and Bryson must! get new contracts. I think our away formation early in the season is what cost us the playoffs this season and with our home form dipping recently will we be able to pick it back up again next season? DCFCfranco Posted February 25, 2013 Share Posted February 25, 2013 looking at our squad i don't really think play offs was on the cards. we've done well this season i think we've overachieved. looking at the teams above there are some very good sides there, except leeds. certainly our away form has let us down this year and we could be higher because of it. i don't think we've missed out at all. this league will always be tight no matter who's. if QPR go down nearly all their players will want t leave. if reading go down they'll stay down. their a championship sid playing in the PL and villa will do what cardiff are doing this year (be clear winners). those are the 3 teams i think are going down. i don't think any of the sides in L1 will do a southampton or a norwich the best they can hope for after a promotion is a midtable finish, much like the teams this year. i'm glad we've missed out on promotion because the clubs not ready. play offs whilst its nice to be in them we're simply not good enough. next year, depending on how we strengthen and don't finish top 5, then yes you could say we've missed out. No club came down with the cash AND stature to keep hold/buy players miles too good for the NPC. I think the quality below that will be roughly the same. Leicester will strengthen again if they don't go up. They are almost bullies. Add QPR (cash) and possibly Reading (cash) and Villa (probably got the cash and stature to be looking at a quick return even if the current team is horrific). The best teams will probably be better than Cardiff, Hull, Watford, Palace. And those teams themselves could still be here except Cardiff. So a bit tougher then. Not much though. But that's exactly my point, they 'could' all make a promotion push but have just as much chance as Wolves, Blackburn and Bolton had this time last year. Villa do have quite a young squad, which might be sticking with them (providing Lambert diesnt get the sack), so I would back them to be at least top 6. Even if Lambert leaves they'll get in a decent manager who'll take them back up. Can't see much trouble from the favourites to go up from League 1, (perhaps Swindon). It all comes down to the investment in the squad. The likelihood of them giving Nigel a decent amount to spend is minute. With a bit of cash this squad would be top 6. I think our team has performed admirably this season, there are a lot of better teams in this division, with more experienced players with perhaps more ability in some cases - and this has probably showed away from home where we have perhaps crumbled under the pressure, but at Pride Park we have played our own football and done very well, very well indeed, and finishing top half will be a good season for this team - no doubt. Granted, I need to go back in and have more surgery, but my footballing days are also completely over, and his injury was just as, if not slightly more horrific than my own. A centre half is all about turning, jumping etc. All putting extreme pressure on the knees. I really think we should be planning a life without Barker, then if he comes back, it's a superb bonus. Wolves could be playing Burton ALbion next season after they were in the PL for three seasons. Good management along with player mentality and talent gets you promoted at this level. The first two can get you a long the, the latter makes it that little bit easier. The "toughest season" in recent years was 2010 and even then one of lowest budget clubs, Blackpool went up. I genuinely believe that even if you have an average team, a winning mentality can get you quiet far, and opposingly, a good team with a shi-ite mentality will struggle. The faith the club has put into him and the emotional support too is admirable, but if he comes back and plays out his career at the same level it will be nothing short of a miracle Something I do praise Nigel Clough for. His dad was notorious for treating injured players disgustingly, although it's believed that he was always mentally scarred about his own career ending through injury that he struggled to relate to other injured players, however the way Nigel has kept Shaun Barker in and around the club is amazing.
