I'll be (pleasantly) surprised if Fornah is better as a defensive midfielder than Korey Smith in terms of reading the game, organizing the team to move us up the pitch, and trying to pick an attacking pass. I hope to be proved wrong and it's true youthful vitality would bring a lot more energy to our team (let's have Sibley, Tommo and Rooney as starters).

Since the days of Gorgeous George we've played with two holding midfielders rather than one, stifling our attacking intent. I think that's such a mistake, and if bringing Fornah in means Warne will move the rest of the midfield forward to where they can better hurt the opposition, I think that's to the good.

If Fornah is better at ‘reading the game, organising the team to move us up the pitch and picking a pass’ in addition to being younger, stronger and more athletic do you think he would be playing in L1 ?

Your absolutely right, hope to be proved wrong but get the feeling some fans might just find he just runs around more. You don’t know what you have until it’s gone.

  2. The debate about Cashin reminds me a lot about the debate that Sheffield Utd fans were having in their L1 years about Harry Maguire. If remember correctly the fan base was very divided whether Maguire could play higher than L1 because of his lack of pace. But most recognised there was a good player in there. Again if I remember correctly the general consensus was that because of his lack of pace he was probably at best a championship level player.

Obviously we know the kind of career he’s had despite the same sort of concerns we’re having about Cashin.

I think Cashin’s got it in him to play at a much higher level but needs better coaching and needs to play in a team that uses his strengths. As a young player he’s going to have dips in form but he’ll be back to his best soon enough. Hope it’s with us.

I believe Warne should be given time - at least until Christmas - but I didn't and still don't  believe he's the right man and I'd be surprised if he gets us promoted.   Why give him time then - simply because we are where we are and I don't claim to be infallible - I hope he proves me wrong.

First off lets forget the decent man stuff - 90% of us are decent men or women aren't we?  Being a decent man is not a qualification to manage a football team.   Is he likeable - I find him slightly annoying - all that family photos on the wall stuff or whatever he does to me would just be irrelevant BS. Not everyone is wired the same way - if I'm a player I want decent sessions, tactics that work and a manager that is straight up - if Warne provides them the rest is irrelevant.

    For me the issues are:

    - He seems wedded to his 532/352 Rotherham way of playing - he's dogmatic rather than pragmatic.   If you listen to the BBC podcast series on him he admits he's not really a tactical thinker.   I think he stumbled onto a system that worked to an extent at Rotherham and he can't now see beyond that.   Our best form last season was due to non Warne type players playing non Warne type football - it was was Rosenior's side with a dash more directness.

    - At Derby in div 1 we are going to have the ball a lot - at Rotherham he didn't.   Does Sonny Bradley look like a player comfortable being last man in possession ?

    - His transfer policy is short term.  These frees will be on biggish wages for div 1 and have no sell on value IF we can even move them on.   This squad is only getting weaker if we don't go up this year - anyone think Waghorn, Washington or Collins will be at Derby in 2 years?

    - I don't know what Clowes' budget is but we desperately need to start identifying younger talent and paying a fee with the thought we can recoup that and more in 2 years.   The issue is bigger teams won't want to buy players from a Warne style team - its certainly not a style that will attract decent fees for players.

    - Do good players want to play for Warne?  I honestly think it's a factor in McGoldrick leaving.  The guy is a footballer he doesn't want to be run into the ground.

Longer term my real worry is that Clowes is a footballing dinosaur hankering after the 80s and he's going to keep appointing managers in the same mould.  We need an innovative forward thinking owner not just a saviour.

Brilliant post up to the point about ‘Clowes being a being a dinosaur hankering after the 80’s’ but agree on everything else.

Only Clowes knows why Warne was his first choice but I imagine the fact that Warne has 3 promotions from L1 without spending big amounts would have played a big part in his thinking.

On the subject of Clowes although there could have been some pull of the heart strings I believe he purchased the club because the numbers stacked up and he will be hoping to exit at some point with some profit, and rightly so. I think he’s a safe pair of hands but he’s not going to put much, or anymore of his family’s money into the club, again that’s his right.

Therefore it made perfect sense to appoint Warne. We need promotion sooner than later and we don’t have too much money to spend. Certainly not as much as Ipswich and Plymouth last year. However I believe Clowes that our budget is competitive and enough to mount a strong challenge.

I’m not ITK but was told by someone very reliable that our budget is £2m. This includes transfer fees and agents fees. The money from Birmingham for Bielk went to Arsenal. I have no idea about the fee for Knight but I believe it’s been mentioned here that it went towards running costs. That’s probably more than any other L1 club and definitely in Clowes mind, competitive.

I’m not a Warne fan.  I really don’t like his football but don’t want him sacked. We’re too committed now and can’t go back to square one. However, I would prefer Warne to stop making out he’s taking responsibility when he’s not.

Taking responsibility is by stating he’s the manager, he picks the team, he chooses the tactics so the buck stops with him. However, he’s going to continue to work hard and will get it right and ask the supporters to stick with the team. He should be shielding the players, especially the youngsters. That’s taking responsibility and acting like a proper manager.

All this I would have started the booing myself and perhaps I didn’t get my instructions out to the players and perhaps I didn’t make the substitution's early enough isn’t taking responsibility. It’s saying the players let me down and that they can’t take instructions and I should have hauled some of them off earlier. Not my fault.

As for throwing some of the younger players under the bus for not trying and that’s exactly what he was saying is a new low. As for his footballing philosophy, it’s a bit late for that.

  4. Warne thinks a few of the players have had their heads turned, brilliant, absolutely brilliant Paul. Like last season when the wheels started to come off and Warne started to question the commitment of one or two of the players. Remember, ‘ah I didn’t see that side of him before’

Every Derby fan wants you to succeed so cut it out and do your job.

Agree switch Bird back and Hourihane into advanced role.

    Agreed.

When Hourihane signed, Liam said the plan was for Hourihane to play in a more advanced role and Bird to sit deeper. Gets the best from both players and plays to their strengths.

Problem is Hourihane doesn’t have the legs to press like Warne wants from that more advanced role.

We have to face the fact that out of the 3 in the middle on Saturday perhaps one of the 3 would actually survive if Warne could get in the players to fit how he wants to play this season.

What we have this season is a miss-mash of Liams team and his philosophy on how he wanted to play and Warne’s, let’s be kind, more pragmatic football.

Tbh I’m beginning to wonder whether McGoldrick would have really suited how Warne wants to play this season and wouldn’t be surprised if that could have been one of the factors McGoldrick considered before deciding to move. Come to that I don’t think Roberts would really have been a good fit either.

It’s possible that to get the balance right we could have to move on Bird, Cashin and Sibley to generate funds for a proper rebuild. It’s probably it’s in each of these players interests too to move to a club that’s going to get the best of each player for the sake of their own careers. Would be a shame.

On the issue of players that don’t fit Warne’s football you could also add Barks, Lang and Thompson to the list.

Talked about a change in culture - moving away from a bland all over white colour scheme at the training ground, ensure players respect the badge, on time to meetings, not shaking Warne's hand when subbed, mobile phone use, etc...

Players voted for the club captain (may not be a player who plays every week). To be announced on Thursday.

What was wrong about the culture at the club?

We’ve probably had the best bunch of players in terms of honesty and commitment to the cause over the last couple of seasons.

  7. About the lack of apology from Mel in his interview.

I think people need to remember or know is that the conduct of the directors could be investigated once in administration. I would have thought Mel could have been advised to be careful how he words his apology. Hence, I’m sorry about the outcome but not for how the club got there in the first instance.

I’m not defending Mel, you simply look at where we were on and off the pitch when he took over and where we are today. It’s unforgivable.

Warren Buffet once said something along the lines of ‘once the tide goes out you see whose swimming naked.’

Covid may well have broke the camels back but the camel was on his last legs already, there’s one person to blame for that.

However one thing that resonates with me that has also come out of this is the poison chalice that is the Premier League and it’s vast riches. Unless something is done to distribute the wealth in football more clubs will go to the wall in the pursuit of this holy grail.

For many owners of clubs in the championship without parachute payments is the stark choice, throw everything at going up and risk financial ruin or run your club sensibly with little or no chance of achieving promotion, and simply die slowly.

  8. Talking about ‘the duke’ Ellington I actually met him in the car park of Sainsbury’s of all places during the time he was at Derby and asked him about his penalty technique.

He said he would keep his eyes on the goalkeepers legs in the slow run up and watch which leg the keeper shifted his weight on and simply stroke the ball into the opposite corner.

And if the keeper waited until the very last moment he would simply put some pace on the ball because at the stage it’s too late for the keeper to get across.

Made it sound so simple !

Why is it? At the moment Huddersfield, Coventry and Birmingham are all below us. Why aren't they in the relegation mix? I'm by no means saying that we're safe, but I can't see why teams that are actually below us are deemed to be not part of the discussion of who might be going down to League One. ?‍♂️

    Fair point.

My post was based on probability. If we get 7 points from our remaining games which teams have the least chance of catching us and in that sense it’s Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham.

Therefore get 7 points and we should be safe because that’s going to mean Sheffield Wednesday putting together automatic promotion form and  Rotherham putting the sort of run together that’s defied them all season whilst playing around 3 games a week.

So my logic is that win this 3 horse race and we’re safe, well until the EFL come along at the end of the season rendering this whole thread pointless.

  10. I would forget the other teams and take it that Wycombe will be relegated despite their last couple of results. It’s between us, Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham to fill the two remaining spaces.

We need 7 points from the remaining games leaving Rotherham needing to win 5 draw 1 and lose 4 to overtake us ( goal difference is too difficult to gage at the moment). That would be a tall order considering they are going to get 2 or 3 days rest between games until the end of the season.

Sheffield Wednesday need to win 5 draw 1 lose 1. That’s automatic promotion form. Plus we have them at the end of the season.

If we can’t get 7 points and the other two teams manage to hit the form needed then we definitely deserve to be relegated.
