If macguires powers are waning, then isn’t now a good time to start phasing in someone new? Is Southgate just going to play the same players until they turn to dust, or is he going to ever phase any out and get some new favourites?

Well i thought he'd dropped Sterling, but as another poster pointed out it was a mutual agreement, so know i dont think he'll drop his favourites unless they retire. Hopefully this is his last tournament

So you’d pick every England squad ever based completely on form?

Yes i'd be picking the best players for the best positions who are playing regularly at club level, which is precisely what Southgate said he would do when he firsted started.. I certainly wouldn't be picking players who barely play just because he might have been good about 5 years ago. We have much better centre backs who are being completely overlooked for no reason.

  3. 29 minutes ago, cannable said:

Of course it is. You get about three weeks a year working international players. You want continuity down the spine. Hence Phillips as well.

Nope. You won't convince me that we should be picking players because they've played for England before. I hear Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney used to play for England as well - better get them in the squad as well then.

  4. 47 minutes ago, cannable said:

    And rightly so.

It’s one of the positions you need a player you trust and he’s never let England or Southgate down.

Nonsense. You want a player who is playing regularly at club level and playing well. Maguire is doing neither and can't even get his place back from Shaw who is primarily a left back.

Southgate dropped one of his other favourites in the form of Sterling and he should have done the same with Maguire. Just because he likes the guy is not a good reason to have him in the squad.

Are they competing with Man City? What's their income?

No idea what your point is here, but Ipswich are one of the biggest teams in League 1, as we are. They are going to be able to spend more than the likes of Burton, but that doesnt mean they have "spent loads of money"

  6. 44 minutes ago, Andicis said:

Why would we compare it to any other league? They've spent loads at league one. End. That's the only relevant point.

Yeah, don't understand his point at all. His first sentence immediately discredits everything else he says after that.

Sorry - did you forget what you said?

Let me refresh your memory - you said Ipswich spent loads of money. They didn't and now you're upset because you were wrong i take it? Spending less than £2 million in a season is not "loads of money". End. Only relevant point.

Not sure why you've got so upset about it, but its not beyond the realms of possibility that we will do the exact same thing.

Ipswich spent loads of money. That's how they got out.

Maybe they've spent a bit by league 1 standards, but its hardly loads of money. They've not spent much at all on any season they've been down here and i wouldn't have thought our transfer business will be much different now that some of the restrictions have been lifted

Far cry from the opinion some had of him here:

I like Roos and think he is a good keeper, but being the best keeper in the Scottish Leagues isn't exactly an accolade.

For a while it looked like they might but they still ended up on 23 points. The closest any team has got I think was Huddersfield in 2018/19, they only got 16 points. We were so bad though I don't think the record will ever be broken.

Forever is a long time to say nobody will ever beat it. We set a lot of records that year - some of which have now been taken by others. I'm sure a lower tally will be achieved eventually

What are you talking about? What does Chansiri being a billionaire have to do with FFP? They have lower revenue in league one, therefore less room to spend. It is not easier to get around FFP lower down, not sure what you're saying?

They dont even have FFP as such in leagues 1 and 2 do they? No limits on losses as far as i am aware other than the wage to turnover limitations is there? Dunno if you spends £50 mill in L1 if that counts towards allowable losses in the championship if you get promoted thpugh

Any good? Looks like he struggled to get into Pompey’s team this year

He's struggled with injury problems. If we were still in the same position as last year then I'd say worth a risk, but with some of the limitations on our transfer policy now lifted it seems stupid to me to sign another player who has a high risk of further injuries. May as well just keep Bielik or Chester if we want someone sitting in the treatment room all season.

If we were "trying" to sack him then they would have. The media spew all kinds of nonsense regarding Cooper.

It wouldn't surprise me if he kept SC in charge even if we went down, given the optimism of the fanbase.

Nope. They won't sack him if his replacement isn't available. Your replacement turned you down, so you've had to stick with him. Lets not pretend that Marinakis gives a s*** about any nebulous concept such as "optimism of the fanbase" 😂

  13. 2 hours ago, Red_Dawn said:

That’s extremely unlikely. Marinakis understands the positivity surrounding Cooper from the fan base. If he was going to get rid of him, he’s had several opportunities already this season.

But after he keeps us up? Don’t be silly.

"If reports in Spain are to be believed, then the club have been assessing their options. According to El Partidazo de COPE , Forest have seen an offer to immediately take over as manager ‘rejected’ by former Athletic Bilbao coach Marcelino.

The report adds that the 57-year-old turned down the offer due to him preferring to start a new role in the new season, due to him wanting to work on a project ‘from the beginning’. It is said that he has also had contact from Crystal Palace, Wolves and Everton this season."

You tried to sack him at least once this season. Just because nobody wanted to go to Nottingham doesn't mean Marinakis wouldn't sack Cooper in an instant if his preferred choice accepted his offer.

  14. Away kit should be blue and yellow and bring back the gold trim for the home kit.

Had some monumentally boring kits for the last decade or so. I assume we'll just get a generic template, but would be nice to have something thats not total garbage for a change

I believe we turned down a bid of £4 million for Bird from Burnley in January - we couldn’t spend any of it even if we had sold him

Why can't we? I could be wrong, but my understanding is that we can spend on transfer fees, but we have to sell players to do it

I’d be surprised if we get much for him.  I think the dollar signs I for one had in my eyes when that U18 team won the league has not really materialised but, in fairness, that’s more to do with the clubs situation

I’d be happy with 2 million for him

Yeh I think our most talented youngsters all went for magic beans when the academy got gutted. The likes of Bird, Knight and Sibley are ok players with Bird and knight putting in a lot of good performances in particular, but I don't think we'll have many teams biting our hands off to take them. Maybe a lower end Prem team might take a punt on Knight, but Championship at best for the other two.

If we got £2 mill for any of them I'd be delighted at this stage.

To be fair, it seems like a lot of clubs come down from the premier league as absolute basket cases and even parachute payments can’t save them.

But the likes of Norwich still have a couple of seasons of parachute payments to kick in. It took villa until the third attempt, and a whole lot of over spending.

Its kind of ridiculous they get 3 seasons of unfair advantage

I do agree. I think the whole system is a load of rubbish. I wouldnt mind so much if other clubs were allowed to spend as much (as long as they dont financially cripple the club), but FFP stops that and the non parachute teams dont even have the same allowable losses on top of that
