    What does this tell us

Players out of contract next summer: Liam Thompson, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Tom Barkhuizen, Conor Hourihane, Korey Smith, Martyn Waghorn, Louie Sibley, James Collins, Eiran Cashin, Max Bird, Craig Forsyth, Scott Loach

It tells us that 2 years ago were only allowed to offer 2 year contracts?

Not from my usual source so take this with a pinch of salt but this lad is clued up in the agency world and apparently we're one of the clubs wanting JCH and are prepared to offload a few to get him. One to watch either this summer or in January.

    But we've already got Waghorn...

No of course I'm not just saying that to annoy people, why do you ask?

I'm reliably told there was an enquiry last week from a PL club for one of the academy players. Derby quoted a seven figure fee (no details of the exact amount) but what was quoted was designed to put down a marker that the club was not prepared any longer to lose academy players for less than full market value. It's a good sign and with the early results from both teams it gives some confidence that we can compete in PL 2 regardless of which division for now, the first team are in. The academy is fundamental to our future in climbing back to where the club belongs. The U21 team seems to have been strengthened by recruitment designed to re-establish the club quickly in that age group. The U18 side continues along the upward turnaround since the New Year. The academy is looking competitive again.

Problem is, under FPPP, we don't always have a choice. That's all well and good for the contracted over 17s, but for an under 16 players it's really not up to us

Exactly that. I am quite familiar with that League; I watch Derby home and away but on the occasions that Mickleover play when Derby don't have a game, I go to watch them, including away games within reasonable reach. Some of the teams are managed and coached by professionals with an extensive EFL playing background and who have passed their UEFA coaching badges; Mickleover for instance are managed by John McGrath with Pablo Mills as coach and they will clearly know the responsibility of managing a young professional. Many of the sides are managed by coaches whose entire playing careers were at local level. Coalville are one. Nothing wrong with that but do they come near to understanding how to treat young professionals? I don't know the answer but I beg the question.

Coalville looked nailed on to win that League last season but chucked it away on the run-in and then lost in the play-off semi-final. Their first choice keeper is suspended for the first six games for misconduct towards a referee. They signed a keeper from Scotland but couldn't play him because his international clearance through UEFA was incomplete. So, at short notice, Harry Evans went there on loan. He made his debut at Stourbridge and Coalville lost 4-2. The local report said that for one of the goals Harry was caught out of position. He was but it's what happens to all keepers from time to time. His mistake was less than the margin of defeat and to be honest, the defence in front of him didn't look too solid. I've seen the goals online. His mistake was no worse than Joe Wildsmith's for Wigan's second goal. Wildsmith played against Burton yesterday but Harry came back to Derby because Coalville signed a keeper on loan from Rushden to replace him. It sounds like a farce and unless I'm missing something, I think we should be grateful that he's safely back home.

I completely agree, and I'm always surprised by the short sightedness of things like this. I know managers have to think short term as jobs don't last long, but you'd have thought a team like Coalville would want to be in a position to loan youngsters from us again in the future. Treating Evans badly, if that's how the academy feel its gone down, will mean I'd be surprised of they get loans from us again in a while

I know what you’re saying, I mean why can’t we just sign a tall, fast, good in the air, great touch, good link up play and scores at least 25 goals a season! Oh and on a free, it’s just so frustrating!

No point getting anyone on longer than a 1 year deal when Harry Lane might be available on a free next summer

It actually sounds quite positive in terms of playing a wider variety of opposition and a knockout tournament if you qualify.

I'm sure it's the bigger clubs who want it so they can play younger players without fear of the ignominity of relegation. Their correct age group players are usually all out on loan!

But it will help us as we rebuild, although it's difficult to finish any worse than bottom.

Agreed, and stops certain teams feeling they need a few more overage players in there to keep them up, you can give those moving up from U18s more time to bed in

Why not? Not unheard of. Lend him to a team you're not expecting to be in promotion mix. Don't let him play against you. He scores against other rivals and develops, could be a win-win.

And put a recall option in January, so if they do end up competing with you, you can take them back mid season

  8. I've completly missed the game today literally only just got to see the score on twitter from waiting room waiting for surgery (I know, you didn't ask for my life story). So someone sum up what (or maybe how on earth) I've missed?

Weak stoke side, or are we amazing now? Is Wagghorn being locked in a room after this? Is Johnson over 21 yet?

  9. Just on the point of attracting  players over other clubs, I hadn't really thought about it (just assumed everyone would want to join because we're massive) but what ate players looking for...

Role:- If you're Sam Smith or Alfie May, are you looking at Derby confident you'll certainly start week in week out? More competition here than at some clubs. And if we get promoted, are you suddenly guaranteed not to start?

Money:- it's not like we can't afford to match teams in L1 in terms of total wage bill, but in terms of a specific player we might speak to this summer, would we out-pay others, factoring in length of contract we're offering? Partly because we're being sensible and thinking long term (I know, boring) and partly because they're less key for us. Take Alfie May, if you're anticipating he'll be your main forward for 2/3 years, you're offering him better terms than us, when I wouldn't be 100% he's starting every week, and if we go up he won't be wanted really

Geography:- I'm lead to believe footballers like that London. Dw I hadn't heard of it either, but I'm told they have other football clubs there or near there or something

Basically, I'm not as surprised that some players choose to join other clubs, even though they're wrong

Sorry to bring this up again but just stumbled across a stat here.

The average age of our outgoing players is 29.9 and the average age of incoming is 26.2 with two eldest players being 31.

This is slightly higher than the average of L1 but I think, as per other comments, that's because we're trying to find players to get us up ASAP with the knowledge that if we go up, they'll be replaced as they're on short'ish term contracts or be good enough to stablise us in the Champ. Whereas the likes of Stevenage, who have a lower average age of incoming, are looking to stabilise in the L1 and develop their players over a number of years and get promoted that way.

Also, according to the same source, no L1 has paid a transfer fee this season thus far.

Is that including loanees? As the average age of Davies, Stearman, Chester and McG must be nearly 50

    The term used was 'relaxed'

    Has the wage budget increased?

I'm not suggesting a return to MM ways, or demanding an increased budget, but I feel that supporters hopes were raised beyond the actual plan.

I took 'relaxed' to mean that for example if an incredible loan becomes available late on in the window, but he'd put us like £3,000 a week over budget, they'd be able to discuss increasing the budget to bring them in

Last season the budget was agreed with the EFL so if we wanted to go mildly over for a class signing that was an absolute red line (see Reading for consequences of going over)

Bradley has a FIFA A licence for coaching , has been coaching our youngsters part time since and after his playing time at DCFC. He has ambitions to be a coach so seems a great fit.
Not sure if Fozzy has any coaching badges or wants to be one ? I’m sure if Fozzy wants to be there will be room for both.
Hourihane is also doing part time coaching at Villa .

Don't be coming here with facts and knowledge, you know someone's coaching ability should be judged on whether he was too expensive nearly a decade ago
