Dobbin has pace but no end product - no way is he good enough !

Think he offered something different from the bench a few times last season.

agree on end product needing work but him running at teams stretched defences and pulled defenders out of position. Collins, Rhodes and Washington seem very samey.

even if not dobbin we definitely need pace in the team.

We've got a Collins though, Warne wants something else. So it's what else is there out there and can we afford it? Or maybe he'll go for 'more of the same' to at least try and ensure we aren't left without cover.

We’re desperate for some pace up front, would happily have dobbin back personally.

Sorry to bring this up again but just stumbled across a stat here.

The average age of our outgoing players is 29.9 and the average age of incoming is 26.2 with two eldest players being 31.

This is slightly higher than the average of L1 but I think, as per other comments, that's because we're trying to find players to get us up ASAP with the knowledge that if we go up, they'll be replaced as they're on short'ish term contracts or be good enough to stablise us in the Champ. Whereas the likes of Stevenage, who have a lower average age of incoming, are looking to stabilise in the L1 and develop their players over a number of years and get promoted that way.

Also, according to the same source, no L1 has paid a transfer fee this season thus far.

Was more the striking options I meant in regards to this. All over 30, then linked with Rhodes 34, sharp 37, godden 31

think our defensive recruitment has been excellent so far.

Agreed. Someone on the forum wanted us to spend £2-3 million on Jonson Clarke-Harris.

Whilst I would love him here. Spending that money on a 29 year old striker on a 3 year deal is an absolute no go.

At the end of that 3 years he'll go for nothing. Doing that is what got us in this mess.

Waghorn, Johnson, Butterfield, Blackman. Circa £18 million there that went for nothing.

Don’t think anyone is forgetting where we were. But equally football is a business governed by money.

ultimately we’re not sustainable in this division, so we need to get promoted asap. We will need to spend money again at some point, we can’t be scared of it because of it being done poorly in the past.

spending £2m on him and if he scores 25 goals and we get promoted would be a brilliant investment.

would argue that just treading water in this division is a bigger waste of money than trying to push on and get promoted.

I also realise that the best situation is arguably a compromise between the two approaches.

It's shaping up to be a very typical derby transfer window.

Starts of promising and ends up flat.

Assuming Big Trav is right (and I'm starting to have my doubts with an ever changing story), something has happened since Clowes said we had a large budget (certainly big enough to get out this division). Did it rub up the EFL the wrong way or maybe Wycombe again?

I refuse to believe that in a season where promotion is massive for this club, Warne is voluntarily placing his trust in 2 maybe 3 strikers plus 30 and a 17 year old who has shown promise, against Salford, Chesterfield and Matlock.

Yeah I don’t understand it either, this season fills like do or die for warne for me as well. If not at least challenging the top two this season then would make a change as soon as that’s looking very unlikely.

Defence looks excellent, midfield and forwards much weaker than last season. Scoring goals was the issue more than keeping them out last year.

didn’t we work out smith, bird and hourihane was a horrible midfield last year? With Thompson to freshen it up.

Hopefully proved wrong and all works out.

Oh come on. He's a bloody ordinary centre forward with very little to commend him, he almost asks for the bad comments. Go on think of some good ones for him - he can't hold up the ball, he doesn't head it well, he closes down after the fact, he's got little football brains...etc. Not our fault he signed for us, he's doing his best.

Agree, have hardly seen anything vile either.

Why do fans watch these games, they are training sessions, for fitness and sharpness more than anything else.

In my opinion it was far better in the eighties when these were all played behind closed doors and fans hadn't given up before pre season was done..

Likewise then, don’t read the thread!

That squad tonight highlights how far we are off a team squad that is needed for top 2. Hardly any attacking options.

Also, we have picked up a lot of knocks/fitness issues. I know it’s inevitable during pre season. But to have about 5/6 out already seems quite high. Have they pushed them too hard?

They’re not proper injuries, just no point in risking them. Am sure if was a league game most of them would be fit.

agree on the squad looking well short though.

  9. 3 minutes ago, I have nothing to say said:

Appreciate he might not be as exciting as some of the names rumoured, but perhaps he could be what we need? Everyone lost their mind when Colin Kazim Richards signed but he was exactly what that team needed.

Just saying, if he signs then why not wait and see before righting him off...

I’m pretty sure if he actually signs then everyone will hope he does well. I’d love to be proved wrong.

But people allowed to voice an opinion that they don’t think this is what we need. Every club in the worlds fans do this. If I’ve previously thought someone was poor I’m not instantly going to forget that just because derby sign them.

By "first season", you mean a 13 game loan spell. During which, he scored 2 and assisted 2.

Yeah and you could also tell was a good footballer. Had a great touch, held the ball up etc.

collins had a dry spell to start, then just as warne joined actually looked decent for a few weeks. Was then very poor until the end of the season. And this was reflected by playing less and less minutes.

I don't care how old a player is as long as he's good enough.

We can't sit and wait for the perfect player to come along, we need to get out the division.

Yeah I just don’t see Rhodes as helping with that

needjng to get out of the division is the exact reason would spend £2m on Clarke harris

Collins wasn't good enough last season and I don't share the faith some others seem to have. Even Warne himself dropped him.

We cried out for pace last year and we've not added any at the top end of the pitch. When Warne himself said that, and also said about the age of the squad, and then doesn't address that... something doesn't seem right.

For those reasons, I am hoping there's more movement to come.

Yeah this is my thoughts as well, we seem to have addressed none of the issues with the squad last season.

like you say hopefully is more to come.

If we end up with Collins, Rhodes and Washington after Warne's 'three good strikers' comment...

With the likes of May and Smith gone to promotion rivals, I'd like to think we have someone better up our sleeve than Rhodes for that third striker spot.

I hope we’re still aiming for our first striker spot!

We're in League One with next to to money whatsoever.

There's absolutely nothing out there in the free agent market.

This bloke has scored just over 200 goals in just over 400 games and some of us are saying no.

I'm intrigued as to realistically you'd want us to sign? Or would fit in a wage budget?

I'm not saying he's a world beater or I'd be excited. But it's league one. We are where we are. Personally think he could comfortably score between 10-15 goals at this level.

Also Knight hasn't even been gone a week yet and some people are panicking that we've not replaced him.

Am not against Rhodes, like you say has a good record. But is not as good in last five years.

Just seems very similar to the other strikers we have, in age, pace, fitness.

not panicking on knight not being replaced yet, but been very apparent that has been going for a while.

was just my opinion that I don’t think currently we have a better squad than last year.

or done much to address the issues within in, lack of pace, energy, fitness, lack of goals. Defence I’m really happy with personally.

Am still not seeing that creative player in midfield - the one with the intelligent defence-splitting passes …

Amazing how  much Didzy also offered in that area when he sat a little deeper…

No, maybe can be bird if plays a bit higher. But a few years of hoping he kicks on now.

maybe warne football is more percentages, wing backs get up. Loads of crosses into the box rather than playing through midfield.

just personally want more control of games than that, but happy to be proved wrong.

Exactly and with just Washington and Collins we would struggle get playoffs never mind top 2. Still think we need 2 more strikers as if this other striker gets injured then we would rely heavily on Washington and Collins

Agree totally, just doesn’t seem enough goals. Even adding godden to them two wouldn’t leave me very confident we’d make the top two.

think we desperately need a quick striker.

  17. Think we need two strikers to be honest, if got smith and godden would be happier. Still not sure we’d have properly replaced mcgoldrick. But four strikers should be our aim.

trying to be optimistic in that we haven’t used the loan market at all yet. That gives us quite a few options for strengthening the team.

think we’ll be happier when at least one striker is signed.
