A WATERLOGGED pitch has cost Waterford United starlet Sean Maguire the chance of a move to Championship side Derby County this week.

The teenager has been the outstanding player in the First Division this season, scoring 11 goal in all competitions for the Blues, and that form has attracted cross-channel interest.

Peterborough United had Maguire over on trial and the Waterford lad made a big impression as he scored for the Posh's reserves against West Brom, while Charlton have also taken a look at Maguire.

Derby wanted to bring Maguire over for a two-day trial today, with a view to making a bid before the close of the transfer window on Friday, but that's now off the agenda due to a re-fixed FAI Cup tie.

Waterford were due to play Mervue United in a third-round tie on Friday night but that was called off due to a waterlogged pitch at the RSC so the game was rescheduled for tonight, so Maguire was unable to travel to Derby.

Brighton are also tracking the 18-year-old but may not be able to seal a deal before transfer deadline day.

Waterford and Mervue are battling to win the final place in the last eight of the competition. Bohemians, Derry City, Drogheda United, Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers all won their third-round ties on Friday night while St Patrick's Athletic were given a bye into the quarter-final due to the demise of Monaghan United.

"Mervue have shown this season that they can be a formidable side, and we will have to be on top of our game to overcome them," said Waterford boss Paul O'Brien.

"The Cup is all about getting the performance required on a particular day.

"We are determined to and will certainly give it our all to do just that"
