DERBY County are still keen to take a look at young striker Sean Maguire, who plays for Irish club Waterford United.

The 18-year-old is expected to spend a trial period with the Rams, possibly the week after next.

He was due over this week but Waterford had to rearrange an FAI Cup tie so Maguire, who has scored 11 goals this season, was unable to travel.

"We are still trying to get him over for a few days' training, if we can," said Rams manager Nigel Clough.

Waterford were due to play Mervue United in a third-round tie a week ago but that was called off because of a waterlogged pitch.

Peterborough United, Charlton Athletic and Brighton have all shown an interest in Maguire.

Derby are still keeping an eye on 19-year-old striker Marc McNulty, who plays for Livingston in the Scottish First Division.

The Rams have been to watch him since his trial spell, when he impressed and scored in a pre-season friendly against Matlock Town.

This is the type of player we now have to take a gamble on, we can't compete with teams signing Sharp, Bothroyd, Maynard, Etc but we may find the next Simon Church, or Tom Ince. Harsh reality but true

I'd agree with you, other than the fact we've just spent £1.2m on a premier league striker (whether you think the money was well spent on Sammon is a different question, but we *have* spent it). There is absolutely nothing wrong with signing players like this Maguire, it's something every club should be doing, whether they are throwing millions at other players or not. Maybe it's just me, but I like signing randoms and having them turn out good every now and then.

But 1m(ish) once a season is our marquee signing, and although I wish Sammon well Nicky Maynard he ain't! The players I mentioned I would suggest are 3m+ players and we will not see signings of that sort of calibre for a long time, but we may be the one to unearth the next raw talent that turns out to be a 3m+ player.

I may be wrong but that sounds like you'd throw sammon back and sell him.

I like the guy, hope he does well and turns out to be a top signing. Good to see him putting himself about upfront on Sat and his goal had power and quality about it, just hope it continues.
