THE son of former Derby County legend Dave Mackay last night said his father remained in hospital.

The 77-year-old was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre, in Nottingham, on Saturday night suffering from a chest infection.

Dave Mackay was taken to hospital on Saturday night.

His family said they had called for a doctor and an ambulance after he had started shaking and his breathing had become "very laboured".

Former Rams players are among those who have been expressing their support for Mr Mackay after hearing the news, with messages also being posted by fans on social networking sites.

On Monday, his son David said his condition had improved compared to how he had been on Saturday.

But, last night, Mr Mackay junior said he did not have any further news.

He said: "He remains in the hospital with a chest infection and members of the family have been visiting him, including his wife."

Derby County extended their best wishes to Mr Mackay and his family on Tuesday and, yesterday, fellow Rams legend Roy McFarland joined the club in doing so.

He said: "From myself and all the supporters, players who lined up alongside him and everyone else, we just wish him all the best and hope he does get better soon.

"I tried to get in touch with his family on Monday and I haven't been able to get in contact them yet but that's understandable given the time they must be spending at hospital.

"I just want to wish him a speedy recovery and I hope he gets well soon."

Mr Mackay made 145 appearances during three years with the Rams.

He first arrived at the Baseball Ground in 1968, at what was considered to be the veteran stage of his career.

After signing for a fee of £5,000 at 33, he quickly established himself as a star player under manager Brian Clough.

Mr Mackay was named the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year in his first season.

He also formed part of the famous Second Division title-winning Rams team of 1968-9.

In 1973, he returned to the club as manager and guided them to their second League Championship.
