Derby County have been hit by an injury blow to defender Mark O'Brien.

The 19-year-old Dublin-born centre-back damaged anterior cruciate ligaments in training on Tuesday and will miss the rest of the season.

He visited a knee specialist on Wednesday afternoon where, after undergoing a scan, reconstructive surgery took place immediately and he will now begin work on his rehabilitation programme with Derby's medical team to work his way back to full fitness.

Manager Nigel Clough said: "It's a big blow for Mark and we're all devastated for him because his form and progress has been one of the big positives in the first half of the season.

"There was no-one around him in training when he went down injured, so there's a huge element of misfortune about how it happened.

"We will support him every step of the way in his rehabilitation work and Mark remains a big part of our future plans."

O'Brien, who committed his future to the club until the summer of 2015 earlier this season, has already shown an incredible strength of character to bounce back from a handful of setbacks early in his career.

At the age of 16 and just months after making his debut for the Rams at the end of the 2008/09 season, he underwent heart surgery in November 2009 after the discovery of a faulty valve and he also required ankle surgery last season.

Clough added: "Mark is a remarkable character and he's had a few setbacks in his short career. We know just how strong he is and he'll be back from this."

O'Brien has made 21 appearances for Derby this season, with 20 of them coming in the npower Championship.

Poor lad. But the most annoying thing this looks like green light for feckin Buxton.

It's Clough's fault he got injured - no wait it was on training with no-one around him.

Medical staffs fault - no wait there was no one around him when it happened.

Ligaments can be torn or damaged by just getting up or turning sharply. I tore my achilles tendon playing rugby due to my studs getting caught in the ground.

By the sounds of it is one of those things.

We have Naylor as well as Buxton - Naylor is a centre half Clough said do on RD

You always worry when someone comes into a team at a young age and plays consecutive games while they are still growing. Lee Holmes and Giles Barnes should have been rested more. Michael Owen has spent the second half of his career blighted by injuries. Hopefully Hendrick's injury is just a minor one.

Clough will be after a defender on loan now.

Your right Clough is after a defender, full back cover He saud on radio Derby. But he will not be after a CH because in the same interview during the week he said he is happy with the FIVE centre halfs we have, first choice Shackell and Barker. Cover provided by OB, Naylor and Buxton. We have lost one of our cover centre halfs - it's not a tragedy.

Very sad for the lad. I think we need a couple of defenders in now to cover but do players really want to come on loan to maybe sit on the bench. I guess we always have super Jake

We need full backs specifically, have done all season. This injury doesnt create the need for defenders because we have 2 other back ups plus Addison and Leacock.

He won't play Leacock - hasn't done so far when we've been in need of defenders, so I don't see why he'd change that now.

Are you really happy with Buxton or the young lad from Mansfield? Addison and Leacock will hopefully be on there way. I agree clough will think Jake is enough but if we lose Barker or Shackell for any period we will be up the creek. I guess we also have Brayford who can fill in there as well
