Derby take Northern Ireland U21 star in trial

Derry City left back Daniel Lafferty could be on his way to Derby County after it emerged the Championship club have offered the talented defender a trial, according to the Derry Journal.

22 year old Lafferty, who was recently nominated by the PFAI Young Player of the Year award, has had a tremendous season with Derry City in their first season back in the Premier League and the Derry Journal have revealed that the left back could be on his way out of the Brandywell.

The former Celtic player had previously been linked with Premiership side Sunderland, where he would have linked up with former Candystripe James McClean, as well as Brighton and Hove Albion, but no move seems to have materialised.

Lafferty is a former Northern Ireland under 21 international but has yet to gain senior honours, despite the dearth of left back options in the Northern Ireland squad.

I hope people don't start jumping on the band wagon of not championship class.

Sunderland in the Summer signed James McClean also from Derry City. When Bruce brought him in the Summer warned fans that this was a signing not for this season but in the future. However his impressive displays in the reserves has seen him promoted to the bench in the premiership.

He is a young lad who can develop and probably will not cost a lot but one that could develop for us. Worth a punt as Roberts has may be this yr left in him.

Seems like our scouting has stepped up, I am all for this, I am sure there are many gems out there and sounds like he could be one, he can only play whats infront of him, lets see how he does in the trial, lets face it trying to keep jamie ward on a leash isn't an easy job, lets see if he can do that!

Sounds a decent prospect by the comments on this blog. He has been identified as the best left back in his league this season. Helped Derry win a cup.

Daniel Lafferty (Derry City)

Narrowly edging out Enda Stevens in the race for the left-back berth, Lafferty has been Derry City’s stand out player this season. With his marauding runs from left back, his ability to cross a ball and his aerial threat from set-plays he has added so much to Derry’s game – not to mention the seven goals he has scored! His presence has undoubtedly aided the form of both James McClean and Stephen McLaughlin, who have both operated from left-midfield for Derry, as his unrivalled stamina allows him to support the winger consistently without neglecting his defensive duties.

Will it be that O'Shea lad all over again? Where has he ended up, I know he went to Brum but never did anything there

Went to Brum but was considered too rough around the edges, went to Stevenage and impressed in League Two. He's currently at MK Dons, scored his first goal for them on saturday.

He'll be a Championship player in a few years, aslong as he keeps progressing anyway.
