I really dont see the problem with having a cheap back up as most top sides have the same. Is Hilaro in anywhere near as good as Cech? Does Jones push Reina? etc etc. Bywater is Cloughs number 1, if like now he is injured for a time then get a loan in.

Can't say much about Hilaro, but jones has played prem and champ football and is a international player. What has Deeney done? His 27, spent his career in the lower leagues and non-leagues. When we could use Akins and Steverns as the cheap back up.

Derby County have today landed promising England under-21 international goalkeeper Frank Fielding on a month's loan from Premier League Blackburn Rovers.

Fresh from helping England's youngsters qualify for the U21 European Championships in midweek, the 22-year-old has agreed a temporary switch to Pride Park Stadium.

With first-choice shot-stopper Stephen Bywater sidelined for around four weeks with a wrist injury, manager Nigel Clough made bringing in a new goalkeeper a top priority.

Fielding, who has five England under-21 caps to his name, will compete with Bywater's understudy Saul Deeney to face Preston North End on Saturday in the npower Championship.

Clough told dcfc.co.uk: "It is a real coup for us to bring Frank in, as he is currently the first-choice England under-21 goalkeeper and been sought after by quite a few clubs.

"He is a goalkeeper we've had our eye on for some time and we tried to bring him in last season, but the deal didn't materialise.

"He has developed further since then and we're pleased we've been able to bring him in because we required some cover in goal after Stephen picked up his injury.

"Blackburn and Sam Allardyce (Blackburn manager) have been extremely helpful and we're grateful for their assistance."

Fielding has racked up just under 100 career appearances already during loan spells in the Football League with Wycombe Wanderers, Northampton Town, Leeds United and Rochdale.

He helped Wycombe to the League Two playoffs during 2007/08 and tasted promotion to League One with Rochdale last season, earning rave reviews along the way.

In August this year Fielding was called up to the full England squad by manager Fabio Capello for their international friendly with Hungary after injury forced Birmingham City's Ben Foster to withdraw from the squad.

He was an unused substitute at Wembley as England came from behind to win the game 2-1.

Fielding has acted as understudy to former England and Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson at Ewood Park, where he is a graduate of their Academy system.

He is yet to make his first-team debut for Rovers, but has been an unused substitute on a number of occasions.

  • 3 months later...

Heard a bit of a rumour this morning, that he's turned a contract down at blackburn, and will sign for us on monday, on loan witha view to permanant in the summer.

Aparently the source comes from someone in the academy set up.

He also said we are still in for 2 strikers, one supposedly matty pattison

I wouldn't be surprised to see Fielding here, he has clearly enjoyed his time here and has voiced his want to leave Blackburn. I would welcome him back with open arms, without a doubt!

Has he voiced he wants to leave Blackburn? Not questioning you, just can't remember him saying he wanted to leave, just he enjoyed his time here.

Oh please let this be true, I can't cope with any more let downs:frown:

With Commons not signing and Sav's wages off the books next season, there's probably a bit of room to manoeuvre on this one.

Should he sign, he'd most probably be on less wages than Bywater.. Not only do we improve the team, but by selling/offloading Bywater, we'd be saving on wages too..

Seems such a straightforward decision to me
